This guide shows you how you could use the Darwin bootloader of OS X as the boot manager.

Assumption: partition 1 = OS X, partition 2 = Vista

Step 1: install OS X on partition 1.

Step 2: make partition 2 the active partition so that Vista can be installed on it.

Boot up OS X and in a terminal window,

sudo fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0

flag 2

quit

reboot

Step 3: install Vista on partition 2.

Step 4: restore OS X on the MBR.

Boot off OS X dvd disc in single user mode (press F8 & type -s). At single user prompt,

fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0

flag 1

update

write

quit

reboot

Step 5: make partition 2 the active partition now to boot up Vista.

At this point OS X should boot up and in a terminal window,

sudo fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0

flag 2

quit

reboot

Step 6: restore Vista on the MBR.

Upon reboot, Vista will show "\Window\system32\winload" corrupted.

Insert Vista disc & follow directions to recover.

Reboot & check that Vista boots up fine.

Step 7: make partition 1 the active partition again to use the Darwin bootloader.

Boot off OS X dvd disc in single user mode again (press F8 & type -s). At single user prompt,

fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0

flag 1

quit

reboot

Voila!

To set the timeout duration of the Darwin bootloader, add the following flag to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>x</string>

where x = number of seconds the bootloader will wait before booting up partition 1.

Hope this helps.

At step 3 (Install Vista) I get to the point where I select my partition to install Vista on (disk 0 partition 2) and I have to format it, which I do, then when I click "next" to continue Vista installation, I get error:

"Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation."

Any ideat what's going on here, and how to fix it? Thanks!

Here's my guide about this topic: http://www.profit42.com/index.php/2006/12/...ot-on-intelamd/

It uses Vista's boot loader instead of Darwin cause with all those new developments I keep reinstalling OSX. After a reinstall the Vista boot loader stays intact and will also be usable when u delete osx. (btw: this alo solves the HFS+ partition error)

:-D

Worked! Great work! Thanks!

Now my only issue is that im RETARDED!!!!! and apparrently mis-labeled a Vista DVD as RTM when it was IN FACT an RC1 disk!!! What a moronic error! So now I've got to re-do it all, using my REAL RTM disk... off to find the RIGHT RTM disk...

*hoping I labeled it correctly... now I'm nervous that it's labeled as an RC1 disk :-/*

update -- worked perfectly just upgrading the RC1 vista to EcHoS release of Vista Enterprise. I then used melinda.gates method to activate vista. now i have a "fully" functional OS X partition, and a fully functional and activated vista enterprise partition!

thnks for great tutorials
