Firewire PCI card... Which one?

Hello everyone ;)

I'd like to install a PCI card on my Hackintosh to add some Firewire support.

Are the cheapo ones with VIA chipset good? Or should I go for a mac-specific one?

And also, does it work like on a "real" mac, install the card, boot, doh, here it is? :o

Let me know, thanks !

I just bought a used Adaptec AFW-8300. Its FW800. I haven't got it yet. It should work out of the box, as Adaptec says no mac drivers are needed. It was $15.00 CAD shipped to my door. I should have it in a day or so. If it doesn't work, I'll post here.

The Belkin FW + USB didnt work for me in a hackintosh. Well the USB part did, the Firewire wasnt detected at all.

The only Belkin I've had success with is the 503 (Ti based one). I tried few VIA and Algre cards and some of them were detected by OsX, but any device connected came up with ID's of 0000 and didnt work.

I ended up with an ADS Pyro64 which works flawlessly - even with upper end firewire audio interfaces attached. No probs with camcorder either.

I Have a Tekram 1394-D (3 fw 800 plus 1 fw400)

It works out of the box, but is costs around 50$

It's build on Texas Instruments chipset, that is considered to be the best for pro music and video work using firewire (no chip via). My Saffire LE was recognised correctly even with no firmware installed :)

My newly arrived Adaptec FireConnect 8300 works, on a fresh install of Jas 10.4.8 Mifki.

Recognized my iSight camera. Card shows up simply as "firewire bus", with no further information.

(crappy screen picture was taken with the iSight/photobooth)

EDIT:

My Intel onboard firewire shows up as " firewire", selecting it shows "up to 400 Mbps"

The Adaptec shows up as "firewire", selecting it shows "up to 800 Mpbs"

Bought the Adaptec 1890600 Fireconnect 4300 that sold on the recent woot off for nine ninty-five. Like others here works fine, no drivers--shows up as a "Firewire Bus" maximum speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec. It does not show up in the PCI Card list on an ASUS P5B motherboard rig. Now I can use my Nikon Coolscan and old-school 1st gen iPod on my hackintosh, yeah!

A question for those who have tried the Adaptec AFW-8300.

My Asus P5B Deluxe doesn't have PCI-X slots, only PCI and PCI-E. If I install Adaptec AFW-8300 on a regular PCI slot, am I gonna get firewire 800, or just 400?

If the answer is no, can someone recommand a PCI-E firewire 800 that works for Asus P5B Deluxe and OSX86?

thanks

I found a firewire card 400 PCI working great on 10.5.8

It is SIIG LP-N21011-S8. I bought it on ebay seller : sslonline 25 euros including shipping and received it in france in less than 1 week.

My external audio interface (M-Audio firewire Solo) works great but there is few annoying things with SIIG firewire card :

- Low bracket profile (I have to built a DIY one so the card will not work in the tower)

- This card is only working with my 2nd PCI slot (I don't know why !!)

This is bad news because my wifi card D-Link DWA-547 is also recognized only on this second port. FYI, this card is great and recognized like a genuine airport extreme card.

It's not a big deal since I now have a PLC module but what a pity....

If anybody know a walkaround, that would be great !

Hi everyone,, i have managed to get the VIA based card to sort of work, being that it says under my mac allow all connections and even recognises my sony HVR-Z1E, but under network its not connected, and when trying to capture video in FCP or FCP Excpress it says the HDV deck is not connected etc, been going over this for over a month now and have basically started to give up,

i have a gigabyte DS3 board, Iatkos 10.5.8 install which is completely stable apart from this weird problem with the firewire card.

Firewire works under WIN 7, have tried 2 different cards aswell , one VIA and the other by Pinnacle with a TI chipset, but to no avail. Sorry to jump on the post but im hoping someone has had this issue already and solved it, as i can't find anything.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for my poor english, i'm french.

I bought a FW PCI card for plugging my camcorder: Carte FireWire 3 ports PCI Mac & PC - MACWAY

Everything worked very well at the first boot. Camcorder recognized, WD MyBook too. I took the opportunity to make a backup with TimeMachine but since: No FireWire ports have been detected.

I tried to feed the card with the power cable provided for floppy, but nothing helped. Have you any idea what could be pass?

Best Regards,

Schatten
