I'm going to upgrade and really have doubts if I should go for AMD or Intel for music production.

AMD Spec

CPU AMD Ryzen 7 1700X

Cooler Noctua-D15 cooler

Motherboard ASRock X370 Taichi

Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V F4-3200C16D-32GVK

Graphics Geforce GTX 970

Intel Spec

CPU Intel 7700K

Cooler Noctua-D15 cooler

Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z270X-UD5

Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V F4-3200C16D-32GVK

Graphics Geforce GTX 970

With previous Intel builds I had no problems with upgrading, it ran very stable and could upgrade without problems. I know it will work great.

AMD however, has such a good deal with the 1700x, specially multi-core that is used in music production that I'm considering going AMD after years of Intel. I'm afraid tho that I will run into problems such as stability, components that may not work and upgrading the OS.

Could someone enlighten me what the current situation is with AMD hackintosh?

Cheers!

IMHO as amazing as the AMD architecture sounds, I suggest to go with the Intel. Apple never used AMD CPUs in any of their machines, they use Intel. It's more stable and more hassle free.

I use my build for occasional music recording and mostly to use GarageBand and Logic Pro for their Amp collections and Loops and it never failed me.

But about the KabyLake processors for full functionality you have to be a little bit patient until the next update for macOS Sierra or the official release of the macOS High Sierra, otherwise you'll have to use FakeCPUID for you CPU in clover. Using a FakeCPU ID is not a big deal but it's better to have full support rather than using and extra setting to make the OS to think that it's using another CPU.

So the final decision is yours and yours alone but at least you have my point of view.

Thank you.

AMD sounds great for their price, but I prefer stability. I will be going for intel then.

Thanks!

You're welcome.

Yes the price is appealing and AMD is great for many things, but hackintosh is not one of them.(IMHO)

Good luck with you hackintosh :)

I would say that the instability is due to improper installation of the peripherals, the audio / video support is complete provided that devices are compatible, nV is not very compatible and can lead to problems of instability.

For having used Premiérepro and logicproX, I have not encountered any problem with CPU AMD, the CPU is there only for calculation, all its instructions work and the performances are even superior to Windows according to the softwares.

Certainly the kernel needs to be optimized but I have no stability problems, I noticed mostly problems with nV, I think the same as with Intel, lack of general performance, I had already Seen with my old configuration i7 3930K / GTX 950 / HD 7950.

With the AMD GPUs, I have not noticed anything bad, also losses of OpenGL performance with the arrival of Metal, other OS like El Capitan or Yosemite, graphics performance are very good close to Windows.

Apple is wrong to do without ;)

So you are saying I could go with AMD too?

What matters for me the most is that audio production works well, without issues and AMD seems to score better in this. For gaming I have windows anyway and could do with 1700x or 1800x.

The only thing I would be missing is Thunderbolt, but could always exchange the motherboard in the future when they make it for AMD boards too. I believe intel has released te patent or something.

I am not a specialist in audio composition, Logic Pro X is very complex and far exceeds my competence in the matter.

hardware ? Simple, no need for patch specific phantom that serves no purpose, a kernel and 4 kexts and works as well on chameleon as clover.
