OK, for all of you diggers, engadgeters and the like, a little (and incomplete) FAQ about the 10.4.8 kernel development:

-Until yesterday, the OS X community was using elements from up to OS X 10.4.8, BUT with only the 10.4.4 kernel. Though perfectly functional, further releases by apple were faster and more efficient in general.

-Apple's kernel includes some copy protection measures, which were modified by the legendary Maxxus in kernel 10.4.4 - this was "patched" last year, and was the last working version until now.

-In an unexpected move, Apple released kernel 10.4.7/8 sources. After months of hard work, some people in this community managed to modify the source (that is, legally) so that it would run on stock x86 hardware.

Please comment on TPM, r2d2, and stuff I don't know about, and feel free to edit this simple FAQ.

I've been following these threads with interest, and I wonder if it is somewhat clear yet what kexts from 10.4.8 we will be able to use. I assume video will remain to be a problem, even with highly compatible cards like x1600, due to lack of EFI, as well as sound-in due to lack of fully compatible onboard audio, but what about things like OpenGL framework, which I think we are still forced to use the old one, or some PCI or other kexts that we are right now using from older OS X versions. How about sleep? In other words, how far behind will we have to be compared to real Mac, even assuming we build computers with very compatible hardware.

And if someone can explain what r2d2 is, I would appreciate it... I couldn't find clear info after searching, does it decrypt binaries on the fly so we can use Apple's encrypted Finder?
