Vanishing ice
I am in a desperate situation trying to build a El Capitan system after 5 straight days of attempts. And I would like to seek some advice from any of you, as I am not able to find a solution online.Though I am not a computer expert, I've been able to build a few Hackintosh with Chameleon over the years. And this is my first attempt with Clover. However, I have not been able to boot the USB, with only the "Reboot and select proper boot device" error every time. I have follow 2 tutorials and both lead to the same result:1: This one with almost exactly the same hardware and Bios version as mine, except my display card is a little more powerful, same brand. Thus, I verified my procedures many times, still no luck:Link about Tonymac removed2: This is another method I tried:http://www.rampagedev.com/?page_id=144I've verified the Bios settings many times and tried 5 USB drives. But the results have been the same. And it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue because the computer runs flawlessly with Win 10 on a separate HD.Since there are successful cases similar to my cases, I am very curious what went wrong with my procedure, though I have to confess that I am not a computer expert. Thus, it is highly appreciated if anyone could give some insight into my issue. I can attach the screen shots of my Bios set up for your study into it.My system configuration:Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 (F12 Bios)I7 3930K CPU64GB RamGTX960 4GB display cardThank you very much in advance! Allan
Where you plug your USB stick? Try use 2.0 ports. If you can't boot your USB stick try Olarila's method, is 100% vanilla. Vanishing ice
I tried different ports, in most of the time USB2.0 ports, ending up with the same error. The weird thing is that there seem to be a lot of successful install out there with very similar hardware. I will check out the Olarila's method anyway. Vanishing ice
Thank you very much! I live in Hong Kong, which is +8 time zone, what time is appropriate for you? I successfully installed 10.8 with Chimera before with the same hardware, only with an older display card. Frustratingly, this is far more difficult for me with Clover, not even being able to boot the USB! Anyway, I do not have any computer background, even I spent a decent amount of time to work on my Hackintosh builds. Thanks a million! Allan
Did you disable the USB 3 controller and "CPU EIST Function"? Vanishing ice
Yes, I did both. The interesting thing is that there seem to be no other case of this particular error for people with similar hardware. That makes me very curious about cause. I even clear the CMOS and start from square one a few times. Allan
If you have now your Penboot close to you, we can edit your config.plist and see if works. Maybe you can find more options about BIOS settings here: http://olarila.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4084 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/311893-reboot-and-select-proper-boot-device-error-with-clover/#findComment-2233597 Share on other sites

Vanishing ice
I zipped it and now it's okay. Need to work early tomorrow morning and go to bed now. Hope you can figure out what's the cause. Vanishing ice
It seems like all the USB drives I created were not able to boot, as I finally could boot with the Olarila's USB drive image you suggested. I am trying to install now. Fingers cross I will make it work soon. Will keep you posted on my progress! Vanishing ice
On the other hand, I am still very curious why the USB drives I created were not bootable. I created the USB drives with one Macbook Pro and one older white Macbook in various attempts. Any clue why they are not created properly? I'd verified many times my procedures according to the relevant tutorials. Allan
It seems like all the USB drives I created were not able to boot, as I finally could boot with the Olarila's USB drive image you suggested. However, I still have the system reboot every time before the desktop is launched. After I hit the boot to OS X icon, the screen will show a dash for 10 seconds or so, and then a roll of plus sign before display the boot text information. Attached please find the screen capture for your kind help. When I change the display card to an Radeon HD6870, it would go into a black screen instead of rebooting. See whether you can figure out what went wrong. Try boot with Nvidia, and we can use some expecifics boot-args. Use: nv_disable=1 On the other hand, I am still very curious why the USB drives I created were not bootable. Vanishing ice
I created the USB with this guide. It just look like everything is properly installed: http://www.rampagedev.com/?page_id=144 This is my first encounter to Clover. One question on future system update, do I just update the system with the AppStore? What is the safe way to do system update? Thanks so much for your kind help! Vanishing ice
I've almost done with my installation. However, I only got the same "Reboot and select proper boot device" message after installing Clover on the SSD. Can only boot with the USB at the moment. What Can I try? I am starting to doubt whether there is something missing in all the USB and SSD I created so far, as none of them can boot with Clover and display the same error message. Let me verify this with you, do I format the drive with GUID Partition Table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OS X with the guided procedure? I really can't see what I have missed in my steps. Attached also please find the diskutil list output so that you may have better idea with my drive structures. The bootable USB is /dev/disk1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/311893-reboot-and-select-proper-boot-device-error-with-clover/#findComment-2233787 Share on other sites
Allan
This is my first encounter to Clover. One question on future system update, do I just update the system with the AppStore? What is the safe way to do system update? Thanks so much for your kind help! For me IMHO, the best guide for create Clover USB stick is this: Making a 10.10/10.11 USB Installer /w Clover (UEFI and Legacy) the correct way! So, for update your Hack, using both methods is all ok, Clover is great to transform our Hack in a perfect Mac! For use AppStore, i recommend using in this way: If you use 10.10.0, go to AppStore and update for 10.10.1 But let's imagine that you use OS X 10.10.0, and the last version is 10.10.5, instead you update bit by bit, use the Combo Update, and you can "jump" a lot of work. But for Updates Combo, consider all reports given by our members, and you can decide if it's a good idea. I've almost done with my installation. However, I only got the same "Reboot and select proper boot device" message after installing Clover on the SSD. Can only boot with the USB at the moment. What Can I try? Ok, how you install Clover in your SSD? Vanishing ice
What I did to install Clover was no difference from the linked tutorial. The selected options in Clover installations are according to the suggested values for UEFI only boot method. Thus, I really can't see any deviation from what I did. And this is very mysterious all the USB and SSD lead to the same error. Anyway to verify whether the boot loader and the EFI partition are installed correctly? AppleIIGuy
Do you have a second USB stick you can set up? Vanishing ice
Do you have a second USB stick you can set up? I have an elcheapo usb stick that I tried to make a usb install stick out of but it refused to boot. Another stick worked. I tried 5 sticks with the same result. And I used a installer image to create USB installer, then it worked. Thus, there must be something wrong with the procedure or other causes. The problem now is I can't make my SSD installed with Mac OS to boot, apparently with the same issue as the USB sticks. But this time I cannot use any disk image as the USB to overcome to problem. There's nothing wrong with your partition map. I will try again as I have been busy the days before. Thank you again. 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/311893-reboot-and-select-proper-boot-device-error-with-clover/#findComment-2234237 Share on other sites
