duskye
I'm having the exact same problem actually, same codec too, I believe it has something to due with the mic. In Voodoo the input gain for the rear mic and audio jacks seem..connected in a way, as changing the input gain in the mic section also changes the input gain in the audio, and with that also causes he static. Increasing the audio in the audio preferences for the mic increases the sound I hear. 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/295877-help-for-voodoohda-whistling-sound/#findComment-1991872 Share on other sites

duskye
So far the only way I've been able to get the white noise to somewhat disappear is by setting the input again where I can't hear any of the noise. As far as I've gotten. I think if I can figure out how to disable the mic, then the noise should go away. Gringo Vermelho
Can't you use the Audio/MIDI utility in /Applications/Utilities to mute your mic input? Also, you can use AppleHDA, I don't see why not. Of course you might need to jump through some hoops to get the front panel outputs working, but maybe not. Setting "front panel" to AC97 in the BIOS does not make your ALC889 run in "AC97 mode". The setting makes the two front panel audio jacks do what they are supposed to, on a PC case that only has AC97 compliant front panel I/O. It's just signal routing. duskye
I did try AppleHDA and the problem still persisted, and my mic was muted. (I could also care less about my front audio ports.) Gringo Vermelho
You could care less but you don't? AppleHDA needs tweaking as well sometimes. I'm sure there are various ways to set up the ALC889, if you don't feel like diving in yourself and learn how to tweak AppleHDA then look for an AppleHDA patched for ALC889 by someone else, I'm sure there are different versions out there. Maybe your Mic input is on a different plug, it's common for this to happen. Try them all.
