jbardi
My only advice at this point... DON'T REBOOT YET... I would definately install JaS upgrade over the top of Kiko before rebooting, as any problems you have with the Kiko update 9 times out of 10 will keep your system from restarting. Again, this will not ensure your system will boot back up, but I can almost guarantee you that you will have a higher precentage chance of a clean reboot after installing JaS update. jbardi
I wasn't referring to the JaS DVD install... I was talking about the JaS 10.4.8 update patch which came out just tonight after the Kiko Combo RC2 update patch was already screwing up peoples systems. LaminarFlow
Alright, the JaS install is 2/3 downloaded, and I deleted the 10.4.8 combo update receipt. Is there anything I can do to fully ensure I can reboot? JaS
well if you get the update download and installed you will be fine. also did you read this in the torrent description? Ok I just noticed that the postflight for this package is not in the resources folder of the installer. It is in the contents folder. So when your done downloading this right click on the package and pick show contents.then it will open the package as a folder. Next open contents and you will see the postflight script.Just drop it in the resoures folder then run the package and everything will install without a hitch. Sorry about that guys,if you forget to do it the install will be fine, still boot up and run, you will just have to manually repair permissions and fix smb. phi
I've installed this first one from demonoid and it screw totaly up my system, in fact the netinfo database. OK, no problem i recovered it and could boot into safe mode after some time. Then i gave the KiKo RC2 a try and it gave me this error with "...you should restart the installation". But icouldn't start any App after this update canceled, no pacifist, diskutil, terminal... So i restarted. No my system do not boot up into safe boot or normal mode. It hangs after the first blue screen when Starting Mac OS X at the end of the progress bar. But i can't really say that it hangs there, because the CPU usage is going up and down (cooling sound) and the harddisk randomly shows a lot of activity... The installer and the diskutil under singleuser stopped their function after first update. Has anybody an idea how to install JaS package without Desktop or what to do? I have quite a lot of software on this machine and don't want to reinstall. p.s.: i have samba and afp working and can connect to shares edit: i noticed not that this what the machine is doing is something like decoding (32bit adresses) decoding .... r2d2 kext and then again and again it seems that something is corrupted in this r2d2, i'll replace it with r2d2.kext from JaS now Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29233-1048-update-failed-but-i-havent-restarted-yet/#findComment-201110 Share on other sites

Yeah, I understand why you'd think that after dealing with all of the 13 year olds here trying to run OS X. Don't worry though, I specifically built this computer for OS X and my current job is troubleshooting Macs, so I know my way around one. I searched but I couldn't find a problem just like mine. phi
I rescued my system for another time. I only wanted to tell what helped if someone has a comparable issue. I know that this is a bit offtopic but regarding my post. Sorry. I have installed the JaS package over the KiKO RC2 while booting from the JaS 10.4.6 DVD. You have to copy over the JaS patch to your HD open terminal.app than enter: /Volumes/"Your Macintosh HD"/usr/sbin/installer -pkg /path/toyour/JaS/package.pkg -target /Volumes/"Your Macintosh HD" Repair permissions in the diskutil from installer. Reboot. (This also works for any other package in case the system doesn't boot or only to single-user) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/29233-1048-update-failed-but-i-havent-restarted-yet/#findComment-201295 Share on other sites
LaminarFlow
Okay, back on topic. Somewhere within repairing the permissions with Disk Utility, it went to a black screen. I could see the cursor, but nothing else. So I forced a reboot, and after the 'loading mac os x' bar went all the way, it went to a blue screen with the spinny thing and hung. So I booted from the install DVD and repaired permissions again. Now it just boots to a blue screen with a cursor. Anything I can do from within the Terminal on the install DVD, or anything I can do from Ubuntu (already installed)? LaminarFlow
I might be in trouble...I booted from the JaS DVD and used the terminal to delete the GMA900 receipt, then clicked the GMA900 package and told it to install. I couldn't uncheck the 'base system' or 'essentials' or whatever, but it said '0 byes' so I figured it would be okay...except it's installing the base system, essentials, BSD subsystem, and everything now. That means I'm back to 10.4.6, right? If it works, is it okay to go straight to .8, or should I do .7 first (which went flawlessly for me the first time)? Rammjet
JaS' 10.4.8 update uses Apple's delta update (intended for update from 10.4.7). But some people have had success using it with 10.4.5. Kiko's update uses Apple's Combo update (intended for 10.4.x). LaminarFlow
Alright, I'm in big trouble, I borked it big time. After running the installer, it rebooted to a spinny thing and the apple logo, but it wasn't lined up...here's what it looked like: http://kefka.ag.iastate.edu/borkedscreen.jpg[/img] I do regular backups of my data so that's not too big of an issue, but still it would be quite inconvenient to reinstall everything...is there anything else I can try? I'm booting to the install DVD to try repairing permissions again. Anything I can do from the terminal?
