Oh hamburger.

Is there a way I can reinstall without wiping the partition...I reeeeeally don't want to copy 60 gigs of {censored} back on there.

Could I possibly wipe the system folder from the terminal and run the installer or something? It's a SATA drive, and I don't have any other way to back up the data. Could I maybe do something from within Ubuntu to get the data out and find someplace to back it all up?

Look - you've had what, 10.4.7 updated to 10.4.8 updated to another 10.4.8, overwritten with 10.4.6 and none of those updates has worked worth a damn. You can keep futzing around with it and end up accidentally wiping your 60 GB of data or you can bite the bullet and do it right. You can try wiping the /System and the /Library directories and installing over it, but you are at risk.

BTW - I keep almost all of my apps and data on a separate Data partition so that I can just back up my personal Library folder and wipe the OS at any time without having much of a negative effect. After reinstall, restore the Library folder (has mail and other personal settings) and I may have to reinstall a couple of apps to get them working and all set.

Okay, I'll give this a shot. All of my important stuff like iTunes, iPhoto, documents, etc are backed up on my backup server, and I have identical copies on my iBook and work computer, but there are things like DVD images and other {censored} that I don't have the space to backup. I'll definitely look into creating a couple partitions.

What size do you use for a base system partition? 10-15GB should be sufficient, right?

Alright, I trashed the Lib and Sys folders and ran the 10.4.6 installer again, it booted right up to the 'welcome to os x' video, i'll try and get her set up.

Ha! I created a new user with my old username, and everything is intact...desktop picture, documents, everything. Excellent! I repaired permissions and everything was fine. If I get bored, I'll up it to 10.4.7, but I think I'm done trying to screw it up for now, as long as all my apps still work okay.

It looks like Preview and iCal are borked, and Garageband is missing its library, so I'll have to reinstall that. I'll see what else is screwy...

edit: I reinstalled iCal from the DVD using Pacifict, any way to get Preview?

The Applications folder was still there. So it may have a combination of 10.4.7 and 10.4.8 (probably not, the install didn't get that far) apps which don't work on 10.4.6.

any way to get Preview?

/System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg

Okay, preview is working thanks to Pacifist, and all of the other apps work great, including all of iLife '06 once i reinstalled GarageBand.

Thanks for the help with this. Sometime when I've got some time, I'll back it all up to my G5 at work and repartition, then take it up to 10.4.8, but until then I'll manage with .6.

Thanks again!
