NezzariX
Download this app and run it. It ensures that your GPU never enters its lowest power state (which causes the crashes). I've been using it for weeks without a single crash. If you set it to open at login, make sure you disable the "hide" option or it won't work.

This is strange I have a much better compatibility with my 550Ti, I only had one freeze ( with private, else it's OpenGL ) in many hours of use. But the best part was the full support of the card, no need to patch although the memory was of wrong size ( 1.5 instead of 1GB ).
Alex Stuccer
After 10.8.3 I applied an edited applepowermanagement.kext and a small app called freezefix (downloaded from tonymac forum) and my system is stable now. Not a single freeze since 10.8.3. Running Mavericks at the moment. My laptop is a G74SX
