Surround sound on my iMac

So I really need surround sound but I don't have optical speakers. I have a nice set that I bought 4-5 years ago but I can't afford a whole new set.

So are there any options? I tried going from a single miniplug to the 3 miniplugs coming from the speakers, but all I get is left channel.

I'm looking at buying the Firewave:

Any thoughts? Is there a cheaper way to do that?

I just bought the M-Audio Sonica Theater. This one works with USB, but I thought it was an ending product line so I don't know where you can buy it. I found one in the Netherlands but that won't help you I am afraid .

This one cost about 80 euros, so about 100 dollar.

I haven't seen receiver that comes with the miniplug optical. But there is a lot adapter out there. Some are bundled with the TOSLINK cable itself. Try Monster iCable® Fiber Optic Kit:

or if you have purchased M-Audio Transit for your hackintosh, it comes with the adapter.

the 3.5mm mini adapters only:

if you're unlucky, be prepared to hear audio popping and cost for AppleCare :P

earlier iMac is not that "working right out of the box"

Well, I went ahead and bought the Griffin Firewave - it's exactly what I needed and works without any extra software (although it does include some). I had an Audigy card installed on my PC for a long time and this is a much more elegant solution. (It even gives you an extra Firewire port to cover for the one it takes).

It also looks great and fits perfectly under my iMac... I'm sure it would work with any other Mac. I'll try it on my Macbook but I'm sure it'll work.

Anyway, I'll have a full review coming up sometime, but this comes highly recommended.
