bizmackus
Hey Guys, New hackintosh user here. I have installed 10.6.4 using this method: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=269841 and its running well, but it seems I do not have full qe/ci with my 9800 GTX. I used this injector with a drag and drop kext installer after the initial install : http://www.osx86.net/view/418-nvenabler_-_nvinject_-_natit__for_10.6.4.html I am able to change screen res and I'm running 1920x1080 on my 25 inch monitor. System profiler recognizes the card as well. The dock is transparent and the icons magnify when I mouse over them. THE PROBLEMS: I cannot run dvd player- I get this error message : "There was an initialization error- a valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017] I cannot run front row- it opens to a black screen I cannot run call of duty 2- I get this error message "Video hardware acceleration required- video hardware accel is currently disabled due to safe mode operation or a driver error. Please ensure you have a working opengl hardware renderer and try again" I also do not get the ripple effect when installing a new widget. Any insight or flaming will be gladly accepted! Gringo Vermelho
First, get rid of NVInject/Natit/NVEnabler or whatever injector.kext was installed by that package. (NVEnabler is great, the others are obsolete). After deleting them from /System/Library/Extensions, run Terminal.app and do sudo touch /system/library/extensions to rebuild the extensions cache. Let's try something else. Download and install these nvidia drivers: http://us.download.n...3/19.5.8f03.dmg to make sure you're starting "clean". If the installer won't run (MacPro3,1 or higher model identifier required) copy the installer .pkg off of the disk image, right click to open, then find and open distribution.dist with textedit and change the model identifer so that it matches the one you're using. It'll be obvious what to do once you're looking at it. Install a recent version of Chameleon - Chameleon is at 2.1 now. You can use my manual install guide posted over at VoodooProjects (find a post by me there and follow the link in my signature) or you can use the forum search here on IM to find one of the automated installers that are available here. Don't reboot yet; Add GraphicsEnabler y to your /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist (you must rename com.apple.Boot.plist after upgrading Chameleon and before rebooting) Always use a plist editor (or at least an xml editor) when editing plists so that you don't screw up the formatting and corrupt the file. Apple Developer Tools/Xcode 3.2.6 comes with a plist editor, there is also a free/shareware one or two floating around online. Your Snow Leopard retail DVD has Xcode on it. To fit on single-layer DVDs, hacked distros don't. Yet another reason to not use them. Reboot. If it still doesn't work, add PciRoot 1 as well. If you have specific questions about any of these steps feel free to ask. bizmackus
Thanks for the quick response. imac 8,1 is my currently identified model. How do I change that to macpro 3,1? Thanks! Also, that nvidia driver will claims to be incompatible with geforce cards. Is there a different driver I can try? Or is that because I don't have the macpro 3,1 model identifier? Gringo Vermelho
that nvidia driver will claims to be incompatible with geforce cards. That's not what that message means. Did you really read my post before replying? imac 8,1 is my currently identified model. How do I change that to macpro 3,1? Via /Extra/smbios.plist. If you don't have that file, the Chameleon boot loader sets a default identifier based on what CPU your PC has and whether it's a laptop or desktop. These defaults are not always optimal and some of the DMI data that Chameleon injects is inaccurate (SMbiosdate not matching SMbiosversion, board-ID not matching model identifier etc). Model identifier only really matters if you have native power management working. But, fix one thing at a time, you don't have to worry about that now, as I already said in my first reply to you you can change the driver installer itself so that it will work with the iMac8,1 identifier. bizmackus
So if I were to update to 10.6.8, how do you suppose that would effect my current progress? Gringo Vermelho
If you're using AppleHDA for sound it will no longer work, you will have to patch it like it has to be patched on Lion. Either keep your current, patched AppleHDA and reinstall it after updating, or find out how to patch 10.6.8/Lion AppleHDA for your hardware. As for the rest, I can't say. Find the 10.6.8 update release thread (it's in the "New Releases and Updates" sub forum) and read all of it to learn about any issues you might face. jhohisel
I have an XFX 9800 GTX and mine is also not working, it however is not even recognized. I followed these steps with no luck, I'm running 10.6.8. When I run the nVidia driver installer it says "No Driver Update Needed". I also updated chameleon to 2.1 and used GraphicsEnabler=YES, and that doesn't work. I don't have any NVInject, NVEnabler, etc installed and I also tried EFI strings using the NVCAP extracted from my graphics card. All of these have not worked. I tried installing lion but since I have a Pentium D, I need to use a legacy kernel and with the atom kernel it freezes at "Kernel is LP64". Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have an older post here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=271454. Yes don't use the drivers I posted, they are for 10.6.4 (which the OP is running), they are older than the drivers you have installed. Use these: http://www.nvidia.co...f01-driver.html If it still doesn't work with GraphicsEnabler, try adding PciRoot=1 to /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist like I explained earlier. jhohisel
Just installed those drivers without any errors, rebooted and it still shows VRAM as 3 MB under system profiler and no QE. I have PciRoot=1 set. There's org.chameleon.Boot.plist in both /Volumes/EFI and in /Macintosh HD/Extra, I update both since I don't know which one is used. Which one is needed/used or is this the wrong path? I think it's using one of them since it's booting with 1280x720 as I told it to. Of course I would rather have 1920x1080 but it doesn't work. Gringo Vermelho
It's possible that your redundant /Extra folder is causing trouble for Chameleon. Stick with the one that's on the same partition as chameleon's "boot" file and delete the other one. Make sure all the configuration files that you use gets moved to the correct place before deleting anything. Always have an emergency boot CD (or flash drive) at hand that works with your configuration. I have a guide up over at the Voodoo Projects forum, look for a post by me and follow the link in my signature. jhohisel
Finally, after months, I have gotten somewhere! I currently have 1920x1080 res and in system profiler it shows GeForce 9800 GTX and 512MB VRAM. Unfortunately it's using NVInject with the extraction of my NVCAP and if I'm not in safe boot I get a black screen. Also I'm in 10.6.0 so my magic mouse and Apple bluetooth keyboard don't work 100%. Flash (YouTube so far) crashes safari and I don't get translucent menu bar. Oh and also there are weird short horizontal lines randomly on the screen. This is the only way to get it working it seems, and I've tried a fresh install with 10.6.8 with the nVidia drivers you posted but I still got nothing (actually, the VRAM went from 3MB to 5MB). I've never read of someone having this much of an issue with a 9800 GTX! I'm going to try the drivers you posted for 10.6.4 (after removing NVInject of course) and see if that fixes it, however I would ultimately like to be running 10.6.8 for mouse/kb support and App Store. Is there any way to get more support out of NVInject, or is there a newer version (I actually used NVInstaller v.52) that would add more support? EDIT: Apparently YouTube videos DO work. The website www.youtube.com crashed and said it was due to Flash player, but I googled a term (Miata drift) in google, clicked on a video and it started to play without too much lag. jhohisel
Updated to 10.6.4 and installed the nVidia drivers you posted, rebooted with GraphicsEnabler=Yes and all I get is fixed 1024x768. Downloaded the latest NVEnabler because I read this: First, get rid of NVInject/Natit/NVEnabler or whatever injector.kext was installed by that package. (NVEnabler is great, the others are obsolete). I also installed the latest Chimera like the download page on OSX86 says to. Rebooted with no options, and to my surprise, 1920x1080!! And no more weird horizontal lines! And no more Safe Boot! I have yet to check everything to see if it all works but this is a heck of a lot better than before, this I can live with. Also, since I updated to 10.6.4 my Apple bt kb and Magic Mouse work as they should. Just thought I'd let you know, If I hadn't seen this post I would have given up on putting Mac on my dell and just went back to windows, thanks! (Even though I could just use my MacBook...) scififan68
Thats really odd, I have a GTS 250(a rebadged 9800GTX+) with 10.6.8 and it works with "<key>GraphicsEnabler</key> <string>yes</string>" in com.apple.Boot.plist in /Extra. I'm using stock drivers as well and nothing else. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/274619-9800-gtx-and-qeci/#findComment-1788034 Share on other sites
jhohisel
Must have something to do with that mine is an XFX XXX edition, I'm thinking that even the brands could have something to do with it. I've read tons of reports of 9800 GTX's working 100% with GE=Yes. One more thing to add is that it plays HD youtube perfectly and I get translucent menu bar. I'll have to try that benchmark program out. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/274619-9800-gtx-and-qeci/#findComment-1788038 Share on other sites
