GoM
I just spent the last three days attempting to install and get working an installation of ubuntu linux, and after installing it, I realized it was utterly pointless. So I uninstalled and restored my drive with iPartition. Guess I know how to do it now... GoM
why was it pointless. No drivers? no point? explain! Everything I thought WINE could do, It really can't, so there was no point. sigxcpu
You have a huge database of which applications are running, which don't and which have problems at their site (or crossover's). You just have to rtfm before doing things and then complaining like i've said on the other thread, if you want windows apps to run, why don't you simply install windows? br0adband
Are you talking about installing Linux on a Mac with BootCamp? Not sure if anyone told you this, but you can't - current Linux distros have no support for EFI, they're all working on older BIOS routines. If, however, you're having issues with installing Linux on a regular PC, why is this posted in the BootCamp sub-forum? bb Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/26322-from-hell-and-back/#findComment-178601 Share on other sites

If you haven't noticed, the new Firmware supports software that uses BIOS, and that is the whole reason you can run XP. Go to the ubuntu linux forums and there are instructions. It works, I just can't run any realtime audio DAW software with WINE, so I have no use for Linux. Are you talking about installing Linux on a Mac with BootCamp? I was just pointing out that after all that work to get it running, I uninstalled it. Colonel
Let me clear this up. Ubuntu won't work without a fight. Right after you install Ubuntu, you must install and configure LILO for EFI. Yes, there are drivers for Intel Macs and Ubuntu. They're just not from Apple. Christoph Pfisterer
use elilo which is the EFI lilo Just for the record: Yes, there is elilo and it will actually boot Linux on an Intel Mac, BUT: You need a specially prepared kernel that supports being started in 32-bit mode. You won't get accelerated 2D/3D graphics because you won't have a Video BIOS loaded and both the ATI and the Intel drivers need one to work. Actually you won't have any screen output at all unless you use imacfb or a similar framebuffer hack. I can easily play any 3D linux game without any slowdown.
