That's the international stop sign, also used to signal "no entry".

A "no smoking" sign would have a cigarette in it.

 

If you boot in verbose mode with the -v flag you should see a message saying "Still Waiting For Root Device". This is the top most asked about issue on InsanelyMac since the beginning of time. For more information, use the forum search, I can guarantee lots of useful results.

Your variation of this issue is with a driver that for some reason does not get included in the kext cache, which is why you have to boot with -f.

You didn't say whether the drive is eSATA, USB or Firewire. This is important.
