Hello.

I have a pc with 10.6.6 ( only that ), and i left about 250Gb free space to install a linux distro, Debian.

I was wondering- How could I install it alongside the Hackintosh? Is there a way to avoid installing grub and use the chameleon as a bootloader?

Thanks,

Niv.

Are you sure? Won't installing grub on the debian partition be risky?

Can you expand/link a detailed guide? I'm not that big of a pro and kinda scared to screw everything, took a while to make it work.

No, it is not risky, it is the standard method if you don't want to use grub as the bootloader.

http://www.linuxselfhelp.com/gnu/grub/html...ter/grub_3.html

"This command will install GRUB on the MBR in the first drive. If you want to install GRUB into the boot sector of a partition instead of the MBR, specify a partition into which you want to install GRUB:" [This is done just about automatically with modern Linux installers: your Linux partition.]

The default method of a linux install will put grub in the MBR, overwriting Chameleon. So you have to pay attention during the install to select "install grub to the boot partition" (not the MBR). Sometimes this choice is hidden behind a Window called "Advanced". The install guide will tell you at what point you need to make this selection if you are not sure. If you make a mistake you can still boot SL, but with grub as the bootloader rather than Chameleon.

So I boot Windows 7, SL and Pinguy a Ubuntu derivative. Windows is on my first drive (MBR) and I use the EasyBCD bootloader for that: Either Windows or Mac OS X. If I choose Mac then it loads Chameleon which is installed along with SL on the second drive. On the second drive I have two installs of SL and one of Pinguy. Chameleon lets me choose either SL install or Pinguy. If I choose Pinguy it invokes the grub bootloader which is installed to the first sector of the Pinguy partition, not the MBR. I can boot all OS from the grub bootloader also. Hack folk like Chameleon because it has a nice graphical interface with themes, not because it is technically superior to grub2. With Pinguy, everything works out of the box. You will find Debian to be a learning experience.
