I have an absolutly fresh installation of 10.6.5 and a Sapphire 4850. What happens to me, is that I get strange artifacts on the screen. I dont see an actual Kernel Panic. Maybe you can give another hint.

I prefer to do my install manually do you use the original kexts and not have problems with update Black Screen --> "plug a dvi>vga dongle in second dvi" Maybe you can give another hint. Nops I only use this method vanilla I have a 4850 and a 4870 work like a charm use the search Forum for another solution
TH3L4UGH1NGM4N
the main factor I see with the 4850 are the ports that are on the card. Madld0n has the dual dvi 4850 if I recall while I have the hdmi vga dvi version. Dual monitors work with the dual dvi card but for me, I only have the dvi port working the vga and hdmi give no signal to my monitor. I way I got my 4850 working in 10.6.4 is different from using the lizard injection method because I have to use a modified radeonx2000 kext. The only odd nitpick to my setup is that in the sys profiler it shows up as a 4830 (not sure why but my card is in fact a 4850 because of the ids). It's just a cosmetic issue that I don't mind too much but I have my full native resolution working with QE/CI only downside is that I only have it working via dvi. I've also tried Kabyl's bootloader but still yields the same results of only dvi working.

I managed to make it all work .. .. but only once since after the second restart I have a monitor out of frequency ... Let me explain: I installed retail snowleopard 10.6.3 + 10.6.5 combo update and the ati hd 4850 video card is well recognized with its 1024 MB of memory and with qe / ci enabled and a resolution ... but just change the port the resolution to 1280x1024 gives me black screen that says out of frequency ... so I decided to keep her so to 1024x768 but it worked only the next time after the 10.6.5 update since the second reboot did not go longer even with 1024x768 resolution. . will be a problem with your monitor or video card? NB my monitor and a dvi-vga philips lcd 190v Max Resolution 1208x1024 75hz
wallinnr12
After a fresh install of 10.6 vanilla, my screen was just grey. I fixed that by using the hex in boot.plist and editing 4800.kext. This method did however not work in 10.6.5 but I noticed that after a fresh install and an update to 10.6.5 led to the system recognizing my card but no qe/ci. My solution to the problem was to edit the 4800.kext as mentioned in the first post, install evoenabler and then install 10.6.5 qe_ci patch from netkas http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N6LXSQFN. After a reboot, I had full qe/ci and a 10.6.5 vanilla system!
