I'm not completely sure because I have 4850 but that was exactly the same as 4870 in 10.6.4

10.6.5 is better just add your device ID to 4800controller.kext and use graphicsenabler=y and that's it. Think I saw a post in the 10.6.5 released thread saying its the same with 4870, try it and see, you can always boot in safe mode and add the old kexts if it won't work.

hi has anyone updated to 10.6.5 with using the ATI 4870 card?

when updating from 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 you had to copy the 3 ATIFramebuffer.kext, ATISupport, ATI4800Controller...does this still hold true for 10.6.5?

Please advise. Thank you!!

No problems here. I have latest Chameleon RC5 + graphicsenabler=y in com.apple.Boot.plist.

  • 2 weeks later...

I too am still struggling with a 1GHz 4870, in an original 1,1 MacPro, running 10.6.5. I've installed the 10.6.5 combo update and followed that with Netkas' QE_CI_Exotic patch for 10.6.5.

In the past, the only way I could get everything working was to follow the Exotic patch with an update to some kext files. ATI4800Controller.kext, ATIFramebuffer.kext, ATIRadeonX2000.kext, ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin, ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle, ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle, ATISupport.kext, all found in Cindori's mapp.zip download. Prior to 10.6.5, these additions fixed any Quartz issue as well as sleep. I never needed to install a SleepEnabler.

I believe that the ATIFramebuffer.kext has been updated in 10.6.5, but don't know how many of these files are dependent on each other. For example, installing all the kexts except the frame buffer doesn't work at all.

Any ideas?

Did you try native first ? After 10.6.5 update my Sapphire 4870x2 works strait up. QE_CI, DVI-VGA both rom's.

It would seem unusual to not have non x2 model included. If not see post#2 above..

Oddly enough my 4850 doesn't boot up with the graphicsenabler=y from the boot prompt I just get a reboot where the card would normally be recognized in the verbose boot

I've heard of native support in 10.6.5 but I can only get mine to boot via safe mode (-x)

Yes, I tried native first. To your point, I shouldn't "in theory" be having the issues I have! ;)

That said, I always need to install some kext files to get things working. Since my original post, I learned that the exotic patch didn't do anything for me in 10.6.4, but had installed it based on some instructions I found on the interwebs. I haven't had the time to check which kexts/plugins I really need and which are {censored}, so I'm going to be as methodical as I can to determine what I need to install to get things up a running. As it turns out, it isn't the entire list of files found in the mapp.zip.

As for #2's comments, I'm not exactly sure how to "add your device ID to 4800controller.kext and use graphicsenabler=y." Is this something I need Chameleon for, or do I use a text editor? I've been using Zeus for all my flashing/patching, but I can try a different app if that makes more sense.

Thanks!

@ smurfk1

I made a vid on how to do the dev id thing check it ouf if you want

I finally had the chance to watch your video and add my card's device IDs, etc. It didn't work, but I was pretty methodical this time, so I'll try to describe the entire situation... maybe it will help someone else. An unfortunate note is that it appears that OSX requires QE in order to do a screenshot! I think I can describe everything in text, so here we go....

First, the exact hardware: ATI Radeon HD 4870 (HD-487A-ZWFC). This is not the "reference" card you read about, which ends with ZDFC.

Given that this is my 3rd or 4th attempt to get my 4870 working under 10.6.5, I decided to delete any ATI kext or other files that I had installed in the past. This included files in system/library/extensions as well as one other directory kext utility adds. Just search for a kext you've added to find out where it went.

After this I installed the 10.6.5 combo. Upon reboot, the screen loads fine, but QE is dead. This has always been my problem, so in the past, I've needed to install the mapp files ATI4800Controller.kext, ATISupport.kext and ATIFramebuffer.kext. In previous 10.6.5 attempts, these didn't work. I know that framebuffer has been updated, but the short answer is these files don't help anymore.

My next steps were to add my device IDs to the ATI4800controller.kext installed with the software update. I also added the graphicsenabler=y stuff. Here are those details:

For the graphics enabler I went to library/preferences/com.apple.Boot.plist and added the appropriate key and string. Saved it, re-opened it and everything looked fine (this is where a screenshot would be useful! )

The video was very helpful in the second task, but before I talk about adding the IDs, I'd first like to mention a couple of things about getting them. In system profiler, under the PCI cards section, I have always seen 2 cards represented. I only have a single card and single monitor, so I've never understood this, except for the fact that one of them contains info that makes sense and the other does not. In my case, the sensible one, reads like this:

Card:ATI Radeon HD 4870, Type:display, Driver Installed:Yes, Bus:PCI, Slot:Slot-1

Below this are the IDs I used. Device ID: 0x9440, Vendor ID:0x1002

Now the first card in the list (the crazy one) has its own set of info:

Card:ATI Radeon HD 4870, Type:ATY,MotmotParent , Driver Installed:No, Bus:PCI, Slot:Slot-1

Device ID: 0xaa30, Vendor ID:0x1002

Anyway, now I have some numbers, so I go to system/library/extensions and edit the ATI4800Controller.kext as described in the video. My problem is that the strings I'm using in IOPCIMatch, don't look like the values I'm replacing:

Originals:

0x94401002 0x944a1002

Mine:

0x9440 0x1002

It looks to me as though each string is Device+Vendor ID, and not separated. I'll give that a shot next, but my final question is should I just add my strings to this list or replace the originals?

As things improve, I'll continue to report back!

Thanks again everyone!

fyi... i tried some more ID combos and still no go:

0x94401002 0x944a1002 0xaa301002 0x00009440

The first 2 are the defaults and the very first one is a match for my card. The 3rd number is the crazy card, while the last number is the device id that Zeus shows.

As a side, side-note, I do not believe my card is "exotic" so I've never needed the Netkas patch.

thanks!

first off lol @ the exotic thing

secondly yeah apparently you need QE to take screenshots now in SL but you can use a file from leo to use the screenshot without QE but I'd have to google which ile

and from what I've seen the dev and ven id's you used

0x94401002 seem to be fine but I wonder if your issue might be in the frame buffer kext the x2000.kext

you could try the exotic patch from netkas for the 10.6.5 and see if gives anything useful from it

and you don't have to replace the strings you only add yours it's not going to make a difference if you leave or delete them but that's totally up to you

I've always hated that they put in the need or QE to take a damn screen shot I just resorted to using snapz pro x since it doesn't need QE to take a screenshot

lemme know how things go for you after you try out the patch smurf

Eureka! I can finally report success!

I found the answer here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1052050

And the download that cured the 4870 problem here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?9dk431cnrtftn74

Cindori confirms in this post that the 4870 is not exotic and will not benefit from the Netkas update. I can confirm that several times over! He goes on to mention the whole problem with the new framebuffers meant that if you're 4870 wasn't working in 10.6.5 there was basically nothing to do but revert back to 10.6.4.

Enter Keita 1! Whatever this person did, it is big... like 400+ Mb big, but it also works, so who the hell cares! I'm sure that all of my web traffic will now be routed through central China, but at least QE is up and running.

Given this fix, I do not believe that any plist editing is required, but I suppose it might be a combination of the two. For people just arriving at this page/problem, I would recommend starting with the Keita patch and only worry about editing files if that does not work.

To sum things up, here's the system I finally got working:

Mac Pro 1,1

ATI Radeon HD 4870 (1GHz model # HD-487A-ZWFC) note that this is NOT the reference card

Install 10.6.5 update

Install 10.6.5CompletePatch (Keita link above)

Restart to full video love... now available in China! :D

Thanks all!

it is a big combo patch I'm using pacifist to root through the files to see if anything is different in there because apparently something is because it got your card working in no time but it bothers me that you had to go through such trouble to get the card working.

Good to hear things are finally good with you but I'm gonna take a good peek at the combo patch and see what's up.

Edit

Well i did find out that the dev id's and ven are in both the 4800 controller and the x2000 kexts so I don't see much else that they new package could have done beyond the scope of that but I'll dig a little more just in case
