No drive to install to?

When you get to the part where there is no drive listed, do this:

 

Utilities Menu > Disc Utility > Click the drive you want > Erase to Mac OS Journal (or similar I'm doing this by memory).

 

Then after it is done, close Disc Utility and try to install.

It says this when trying to erase it : Could not write partiton map.

 

Ok, I got it to erase, now when I try to partition, it says Input/Output error, or something like that.

 

Edit: I got it to be HFS+, but when I try to mount it, it says it can't because of an error. When I try repairing it, it says the same. Is my harddrive broken?
