Creating Windows partition

I want to create a partition to install Windows on, but the disk utility makes it sound like I can't resize my OSX partition (which is consuming my entire HDD) without erasing its contents.

How can I split my OSX partition to create a partition that the Windows installer can see without damaging my OSX partition? I'm a bit new to the disk utility.

I see two possible options, Carbon Copy Cloner to another drive, repartition, and copy back. Or try GParted, resize the partition.

I don't see much luck either way, since you likely have your drive partitioned using GPUID (Apples system) instead of MBR (Microsoft's system).

I would just plan on a reinstall if I were you.

The drive is partitioned as MBR.

If there's no way of partitioning the disk without erasing, is it safe to reformat the OSX partition from the vista installer to install vista first?

Use GParted and resize the OSx86 partition (BACKUP FIRST!!!). With the free space (preferably at the end of the drive) make a FAT32 (NTFS if win7 or vista) partition. Load the installer and install to that partition.
