NickMiller
Unless you are using a Vanilla kernel or a retail disk, you cannot update OS X through the software update. Off-topic: Are u the same Andy202 from BlazeByte?? If so, I am SteezyBoy

atari800
What is the name of the disk image you downloaded? Sometimes the title will indicate what kernel(s) they contain Also sometimes the "producer" of the modified disk will name the kernels You might try starting terminal (since your a noob click on magnifying glass in top right and type the word terminal and hit enter) Then in terminal type in cat /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist Look for something like this: <key>Kernel</key> <string>mach_kernel</string> <--- this might be different but might reveal what you are using *My build has anv_kernel, blackknight_kernel, legacy_kernel, atom_kernel, chocolate_kernel, mach_kernel *It took the software update fine - well I needed to remove sleeper kext but it worked
Gringo Vermelho
I installed Snow leopard 10.6.0(i assume) and I'm trying to update it to 10.6.4, i tried it today but ended up getting a KP because of com.apple.dsmos. Make sure you have fakesmc.kext installed. All hacked distro DVDs that I've seen (I've seen quite a few) have several different hacked/patched kernels to choose from for those who can not use the vanilla kernel. Normally it works like this; if you don't select a non-vanilla kernel, the vanilla kernel will be installed. If you want to know which kernel is installed on your system, run Terminal and type uname -a at the prompt. If the result is all greek to you, then google it or post it here. Having 'mach_kernel' at the root of your system drive or in com.apple.Boot.plist will not tell you anything, as a patched kernel can be named mach_kernel as well. The kernel can have any name you want, you can name it after your dog if that makes you feel good. Unless you are using a Vanilla kernel or a retail disk, you cannot update OS X through the software update. If you know what you're doing and your hardware is compatible, then yes, you can. I have a Pentium 4 (i865/ICH5) hack here that updates just fine to 10.5.8 via Software Update, all the way from JaS 10.5.4 or iPC 10.5.6. Of course it has to be 'prepared' here and there, but it works just fine.

Gringo Vermelho
See post #6 By the way, there's no need to quote the whole post when you're replying, especially when the post is right above yours. It seems to be very popular in this forum for some reason. You're doing it in all your posts. All it does is clutter up the threads with useless text. If you must quote, please do it consciously and do it for a reason.
Andy202
understood are there any ktext that need to be removed or just install the fakesmc also what do you mean by "prepared here and there"
Gringo Vermelho
are there any ktext that need to be removed or just install the fakesmc Not ktext, kext, it's short for Kernel Extension. Nothing to do with text. I don't think so, check for AppleDecrypt.kext and DSMOS.kext, if you have one of them you need to delete it. fakesmc.kext is required on all PCs running OS X with the the vanilla kernel. It's the only kernel extensions that everybody has to use. On a 10.5.x installation running the Voodoo kernel, either DSMOS.kext or AppleDecrypt.kext is normally used instead of fakesmc.kext, for reasons discussed in the first link below. also what do you mean by "prepared here and there" That's very specific to my particular P4 Hackintosh, some of it is specific to 10.5.x and some of it is specific to hardware that can't use the Vanilla kernel so that information would not be of much use to you. For example, I'll lose audio and LAN and I have to patch that manually after updating. I have to delete a plugin inside IONetworkingFamily.kext, otherwise it'll conflict with the driver for a Realtek 8139 PCI card I'm using. And I have to add a device ID to NVDANV40Hal.kext and NvidiaResman.kext to get accelerated graphics going on the old 7600GT AGP card. But that's not all.
