DJ24966
Is it safe to install the software updates on my system? It shows the following ready/need updating. Front Row Update 2.1.7 AirPort Utility Software Update 5.4.2 Safari 5.0 (I know that's fine) Remote Desktop Client Update 3.3.2 AirPort Base Station Update 5.5.1 QuickTime 7.6.6 (Should be fine as well) iLife Support 9.0.4 Security Update 2010-004 1.0 Security Update is the main thing I'm worried about. Would it break my install, or should I be fine? Thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/225294-ideneb-1058-safe-to-run-updates/ Share on other sites

Akord
i've installed all the updates, but now it seems like my HP mini hangs more often during startup. Used to hang about once every 8 times, now it hangs once every 3-4 times. anyone experiencing the same problems after those updates? could it be from the security update 2010-004? thanks for the help Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/225294-ideneb-1058-safe-to-run-updates/#findComment-1530579 Share on other sites
oldtopman
Type -v every time you boot, preferably with a camera nearby. When it hangs, get us a picture of the crash. smartie77
i've installed all the updates, but now it seems like my HP mini hangs more often during startup. Used to hang about once every 8 times, now it hangs once every 3-4 times. anyone experiencing the same problems after those updates? could it be from the security update 2010-004? thanks for the help the update you mention is for these issues on the filesystem level according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4188 : A symlink following issue exists in Folder Manager. A folder named "Cleanup At Startup" is removed upon unmount. A maliciously crafted volume may use a symlink to cause the deletion of an arbitrary folder with the permissions of the current user. This issue is addressed through improved handling of symlinks. IMAGE I/O : Multiple integer overflows in the handling of TIFF files may result in a heap buffer overflow. Opening a maliciously crafted TIFF file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. The issues are addressed through improved bounds checking. A memory corruption exists in the handling of MPEG2 encoded movie files. Viewing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue is addressed by performing additional validation of MPEG2 encoded movie files. A Finder operation may result in files or folders with unexpected permissions Description: When "Apply to enclosed items..." is selected in the "Get Info" window in the Finder, the ownership of the enclosed items is not changed. This may cause the enclosed files and folders to have unexpected permissions. This issue is addressed by applying the correct ownership. Maybe you should repair permissions, but with an OSX86 tool and not with Apples own tools .. I dont see any kernel updates in Apples Description, and no new kexts, but rebuilding the kextcaches with kextutility will certainly not harm. Also notice that OSX needs a bit housekeeping. As modern as it seems on the Desktop, the underlying system is ancient : OSX consists of a Unix base and a Nextstep gui, sitting on top of that , this dates back to 20 year old OS-design and is super complex and therfore needs a clean base and correct permissions which are the Alpha and Omega for Unix systems. OSX-Utils like Onyx are made for that reason. OSX86tools is the equivalent but made especially for us hackers in mind. On a real mac there is no /Extra/Extensions folder for example ;-) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/225294-ideneb-1058-safe-to-run-updates/#findComment-1532202 Share on other sites
