The OSx86 scene is a bit different now...

I was wondering the other day that maybe with the newest installation methods, newbie OSx86 users get a bit left out of this wonderful scene.

For instance most of the installation methods for Snow Leopard require a working MacOS X installation to make it work. Not all people start from this point for their Snow Leopard attempts. I do know that the newest methods make the overall performance & stability of the system more native like (apple update & DSDT as well as other), but i really do think that the scene has started looking different as of late.

Up until Tiger & Leopard the newbie user could start an installation on a totally mac-free system with all the great distro's and finally get there, even if we had to re-install the distro 5 - 10 times trying different kext combinations and other fixes.

In the end i wish there would be more quality Snow Leopard DVD distributions so we really don't exclude new users and also the people that don't have an existing MacOS X installation on their PC.

Peace!

I am a newbie for the second time around. I started on the hackMac 2 years ago with minor success. I was using an AMD CPU back then. I am currently using an Intel i7 920 on Asus P6T using GTX260. I tried installing a SnowLeo using with and without a full fledged Mac machine. I got more success in using without a running Mac machine. I used the iMac boot 132 CD plus a retail copy of Snow Leopard. So far I can say that I was able to surpassed my expectations compared to my very first hackMac. So I can say that you can do the Mac installation without a running Mac.

What i did: install mac os x leopard, and use that as a base system. leo is fairly easy to install, so you can jump up to snowy from there! (i hope, still didn't manage, killed the whole set for the 3rd time today ;) )

Yeah, I wish there would be more distros that had Snow Leopard already built in them. However, I got 10.5.6 working on an old laptop, so I'm going to use that to start.

Off-topic, why can't I start any new topics? It says I don't have permission...

The "newest" ones I know of, use ether a Boot CD or thumb drive, and the Retail DVD,

and they are are not much harder to use than installing Windows or Linux.

And the Boot CD does not need a working Mac or OS X install.

I wish there would be more quality Snow Leopard DVD distributions

2 problems with OS X distros

(1) You don't know what bad things they might have done to it

(2) Software Piracy

What we need is more ways of installing using the Retail DVD with out

using a real Mac or OS X install, like that Boot CD.
