However, everytime I load Disk Utility, it does not show my listed hard disk. Can anyone pleeease Help? You need to be specific... find out the ide / sata controller 's name, that's the key to your problem and search on that. Maybe try another distro. And no, you cant restore the installed system into the laptop, you will still have the same problem (no driver for the hdd controller) next time, give some info .... ide / sata controller type (not the actual hdd, that means nothing), hardware info in general. I am trying to install using VMware but after I get the GUI from a retail version of Leopard the machine turns on "examining disks". If I use the disk utility there are no disks mounted. I am following the instructions on the "VMware Mac OS Guest Package"... I have a separate post below to which nobody has responded either. Maybe if nobody responds, we can figure this out together. I am running on a Dell M2300. I believe this install has worked on its sister a Dell M6300... slightly bigger screen. The Processor has the VT instruction set enabled and verified by CPU-Z and is a dual Intel processor. On device manager the drive is listed as: ST9320423ASG ATA Device Location 0(Channel 0, Target 0, Lun 0) Driver: Microsoft 6.1.7600.16385 Driver files: disk.sys; partmgr.sys; SDDisk2K.sys I guess basically the GUI install does not find this drive since it is not mounted... perhaps Windows 7 drivers are throwing a curve ball here. Oh, I see. As stupid as this may sound, where could I find the IDE controller typeinformation? I looked into Google already. Also, the distro im using right now is SUPPOSED to work according to HCL on osx86wiki. The difference between my hardware and the one in HCL is the hard disk. Cheers Are you using the same model laptop? As much as I want to change it to AHCI, I am using an IDE drive. Also, I checked the boot options but found nothing that says about AHCI. I still couldmn't get it to install no matter how many boot strings I use -v,f,s or guesOs. I tried to use my USB to IDE bridge (its an enclosure) and the installer detected it. I tried installing, the DVD verified but I get stuck at some point in the installer and it doesnt seem like its moving. HELP HELP HELP PLEASE! CPU-Z and Everest are 2 programs that can help you find the following Processor model Northbridge chipset (ex: ICH9) Ethernet chipset (ex: Realtek R1000) Audio Chipset (ex: AC97) the chipset you chose during install is most likely wrong or you selected more than 1, for disk utility to not work correctly. for Vmware i have no idea, i have no use for it so can't help anyone there kaswistry - Now that you got your info about your hardware, unless i missed it, you said your on a laptop? it would help which laptop model AHCI is a bios option, and if your bios does not have an option for it, 99% chance you have nothing to worry about AHCI. If you've changed a bunch of bios options and the installer won't even complete or load, i would go back to your bios and restore it to the defaults. often times the default bios options will work fine, unless you have an AHCI/RAID option, you want that selected on AHCI. for desktops you'd want to disable other drives, floppy, parallel ports, etc that wont be used but your on a laptop so thats irrelevant. for iAtkos or iPC what drivers did you select when customizing the install? HCL says it is compatible with iAtkos 5. something. I that distro and it worked except I could not see a Hard disk under Disk Utility. Further research helped me understand that what I needed was iAtkos. It booted to the GUI. But once again, No hard disk. So, I wasnt even able to select any kernels or stuff like that. The problem with iPC is that its stuck at ApplePS2Touchpad and I then it gives me the error message "still waiting for root device" and that's that. stuck there. I couldn't even load the GUI. However, iAtkos makes me load the GUI, bypasses the ApplePS2Touchpad problems (I didnt experience that one) but I can't see any of my drives (except if I use an external drive that is). So, in conclusion, iPC gives me errors on ApplePS2Touchpad and iAtkos lets me load to the GUI without option to see my hard disk. darn. Update: I downloaded iAtkos v7 in hopes that it would be better than v5 but all I got was an EBios Error. So my best bet still would be to use iAtkos 5. The next problem would be HOW TO MAKE THE DRIVES SHOW. Help please? THANKS ALOT! Those chipsets are pretty uncommon these days, which is not a good sign -- there might not be any OSx86 drivers for them at all (I don't know one way or the other, I'm afraid). Be absolutely certain that the machine in the HCL really is exactly the same model as the one you've got. Manufacturers often play games with model names, making radical changes "under the hood" while making very tiny (or sometimes even no) changes to the model name. For instance, the FooLap 2792e12 may have a completely different chipset from the FooLap 2792f12, even though you'd think they'd be very similar machines based on their model numbers. However, everytime I load Disk Utility, it does not show my listed hard disk. Can anyone pleeease Help? That's why I wonder why it doesnt work @unkoil I will try that too. Update: I bought a new HD thats 320 GB and Seagate. Still undetected. I put the old Fujitsu in a HD enclosure and iAtkos Disk Utility detects it! Im trying to install it there and if it installs, I will try to put in in my laptop. Should everything be okay, I will install in such manner. I will keep you posted guys. Thanks for the help Update again: I installed iAtkos v5 on my Fujitsu external HD. What happened was after I installed it there, my laptop just kept restarting over and over again. It said installation was a success, then asked to be restarted and it seemed that it just kept entering the black installation screen over and over again. How do I go about this? In order to access the hard disk, any modern operating system needs drivers for the disk controller. As others have said, the make and model of disk is unimportant, since the interfaces to the disks themselves are very standardized, unlike the interfaces to the disk controller. When the disk is plugged into the computer motherboard, the disk is accessed via the disk controller on the motherboard. In your case, this is a SiS chipset. Unfortunately, the report you posted didn't specify the exact model of IDE controller you've got, although it did say it's a SiS 180 SATA controller. When the disk is plugged into an external enclosure and attached to the computer via an external port (presumably a USB port in your case), the disk controller is really a USB port, which uses entirely different hardware from the normal motherboard disk controller. Thus, your disk is working (up to a point) via the external enclosure and USB port, but not via the internal hardware and IDE port, simply because the installer correctly detects and uses the USB port but not the IDE port. Until you research the disk controller on your computer in more detail, you'll just be stumbling around in the dark trying to resolve this problem. As I said, SiS chipsets are pretty rare these days. I don't happen to know the status of OS X drivers for them, and to be blunt, I'm not willing to do the research to find out what might be necessary to get them working on your system with your specific SiS chipset. The same is probably true of others here, although it's conceivable you'll luck out and somebody with the same chipset will read this and post. Note that one SiS chipset could theoretically work fine, but another might not work at all, so you've got to research the specific SiS chipset you've got. It may not even be possible to get it working. If you're serious about getting OS X working on your system, doing this research should be your top priority. As to your system being "practically the same" as one you read about that worked, once again, I must emphasize that manufacturers often play games with model numbers; the same model number does not guarantee that you've got the same hardware. For instance, I've got a USB Wi-Fi adapter that works under OS X, but that model has been released with at least two or three chipsets inside it, with no change in the model number. Thus, the drivers needed to use my Wi-Fi adapter would not work with some other versions of the "same" adapter, judging by the model number. Furthermore, without a direct link to your source information, I can't evaluate the claim that it worked. Perhaps there's some critical detail in that original description that would explain why it worked and yours doesn't, and you've simply missed it. I was searching online and I figured I'd read more about the laptop's chipset only to find out it wasnt a SiS 672 but a SiSM672 (notice the M?). I'm really excited as I write this down! Anyway, I searched for M672 and came across an indonesian (or some weird language website) and discovered the solution! Apparently, while the bios does not come up with helpful instructions, there's a setting about OPERATING SYSTEM. Instead of Selecting Windows XP or Other (which I thought was proper since I used Windows 7, and it was also the default), some user made mention to SELECT VISTA instead. When I selected vista, a hidden option was revealed. It was some sort of option to CHOOSE a SATA (which I interpret as the pc asking "which-hd-sata-do-I-use?"). I changed settings and toyed with it and NOW I CAN SEE MY DRIVE!!!!!!! REJOICE!! LOL Anyway, I used the settings for M72sr for HCL CODE method: iAtkos 5i options to costumize: -> iATKOS Main system -> Boot - PCI_EFI V9 -> x86 - decrypters - dsmos - SMBIOS - enabler - kernel - nothing - ACPI - x86 - disabler.kext - OHR - Thermal -> Driver - VGA - intel X3100 - EFI strings - System - intel AHCI SATA (achi activated on bios) - speedstep b - Laptop battery - network - Realtek And now I am waiting for the installation to finish. Whether it will work or not, thats the second problem because for now, I CAN SEE MY DRIVES! LOL Anyway, new questions: In case the current config above wont work for my unit, what OTHER config could I use? How do I update the system? Lastly, how do I install Snow Leo? THANKS ALOT GUYS! As to your new questions, for #1, there are so many possible ways for it to go wrong that it's impossible to say. If you have more problems, you'll need to deal with them on the basis of whatever symptoms you get. For #2, if you're referring to system updates after installation, there's a utility in OS X to fetch them from Apple; however, this can be risky, particularly for version updates for the OS as a whole (10.5.6 to 10.5.8, say), so be careful with that. I recommend you make frequent backups as you configure the system, so that you can restore to a known-working system if any change you make breaks things very badly. As to #3, you can try either a distribution such as Hazard or a vanilla retail installation with the help of a boot tool such as Empire EFI or even a working 10.5 installation (assuming you can get iAtkos working). Options are thin on the ground compared to those for 10.5, though. I just installed iAtkos only to find out that my system goes into an endless loop. However, unlike before, it the Black Screen sees my HD and asks for startup options. If you let it run by itself, it boots endlessly. If you use flags like -v, -f, x, or even cpus=1, nothing happens, continous endless boot. Any help? It boots up to the point where the DARWIN text is seen and then it asks for a key if you want startup options. If you dont click any key, it continues its boot and then the screen blacks out and the BIOS check runs again, (POS, I think thats what they call it) If you press a key, for example -v, it loads files as if its gonna install, then the screen goes black and then it returns to the BIOS POS.
