dunkmaster
i have been enjoying 10.5.7 for a while but i decided to get Unrar X to extract files and it took hours!!! I then got rar machine to do the other RARs but it too took hours. I switched to my windows 7 partition and it took 5 MINs to do the same task! I checked out the task manager and at least rar machine had 13 threads but the CPU utilized was less than 5% which is not bad but it is very inefficient. what's the cause of this? will1384
Try the free "StuffIt Expander" or even "The Unarchiver" and I am sure there is more out there Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/205469-osx86-inefficient/#findComment-1375258 Share on other sites
dunkmaster
but my problem isn't program specific although i will try those. it is trying to understand what can make a program so inefficient in the first place. more specifically, what about my computer would make a program not run efficiently? Yea that is odd, I have used "Unrar X" with no big problems, I think I remember it failed to extract an archive once or twice, but I download a lot of stuff, I have had some freeware games and apps crash or lock-up my hackintosh a few times, but no more so than Windows or Linux, I run a lot of freeware on both. I wonder if its CPU related, hopefully someone will know. el Kabong
I used unrarX on my Opteron machine and it worked about as fast as on my PC. If it's the ONLY program running slow use something different. If other programs run slow then you have a system problem. I plan to migrate to Snow Leopard since it's 64 bit. I didn't realize Leopard was only 32 bit until after I installed it on my wife's Hack. I'll build another to get the config right before I upgrade hers. I want to ensure EVERYTHING runs right. I ran into too many issues with Windows 7/64 not running loads of programs, but that's windows. I haven't had any problems on my linux boxes running old 32 bit programs on Fedora 64 bit. I have no problems with UnRarX on my Intel C2D laptop.
