I see mixed results with auto-sleep and gigabyte boards. For me currently auto-sleep does not work and hasn't since SL. Previously in 10.5 it was working and I'm at a loss as to why it's broke. So I'm starting this thread to see if I/we can figure it out.

Also, I don't want to have to settle for some apple script to get it working either.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

1. DVD optical drive:

In 10.5 the source of my sleep issues were the DVD drives I had. I purchased a pair of Sony Optiarc and the auto-sleep started to work again. Since then I've heard of people using the same drives I got rid of and had auto-sleep working. So I'm inclined to think this isn't the issue... for me at least.

2. Bad DSDT patch:

I've been playing around with all sorts of DSDT patches for my rig. When auto-sleep worked in 10.5 I migrated to SL with virtually the same DSDT so don't really think this is the problem either.

3. Overclock settings:

This seems to be a common source of sleep issues but my rig has no problems sleeping in any kind of Windows environment. So it seems less likely this is the problem although I'm not completely convinced.

4. USB/PCI device/adapter or other hardware:

To test this theory I stripped my computer down to the bare essentials. I even went so far as to disable all the devices I wasn't using in BIOS such as IDE/parallel/serial/ethernet/audio etc. with no results. I don't think this is it.

5. Some piece of software:

I know this can be a problem and a difficult one to track down. I'll have to reinstall SL to bare essentials to see if I can get auto-sleep to work on a virgin install. This is actually my next step.

6. A combination of some or all of thee above:

Man I hope not! I'll never figure it out!

Anyone who wants to contribute please tell me if auto-sleep works or doesn't and give as much detail about your setup as you can. Be sure you have a signature too. Attach any files you feel pertinent and any behaviors worth mentioning. For example "My hack sleeps but not at the intended time interval in system preferences".

Thanks all.

Lately I've been working on an EP45-UD3P and EP45-DS4P and see the same issue with autosleep and snow.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

1. DVD optical drive:

Well, the simplest way to tell is to unplug it and try without. I have Pioneer and Sony Optiarc's that work fine in Leo with autosleep but still see the same issue with or without them on the Gigabyte.

BTW, these work on my asus mcp79 boards with snow and autosleep. On those boards the "old" issue with some dvd drives and autosleep still exists.

2. Bad DSDT patch:

Wouldn't say it's a bad patch but rather something we are missing.

3. Overclock settings:

Run at default, non-OC'd settings and you see the same issue.

4. USB/PCI device/adapter or other hardware:

May not be a particular piece of hardware but rather how something is not setup right - back to item 2.

5. Some piece of software:

I'm running "virgin" installs and see the issue, however even according to Apple the proverbial "it depends" comes into play even with a default install. Best practice for testing is to boot, not run anything, and wait for the timeout. Keep in mind it may not happen right on the dot at the timeout minute specified (I'd wait for up to 5min afterwards to make sure).

6. A combination of some or all of thee above:

It's a quirk for sure and it'll be a pita to compare ami vs award dsdt to find something that helps but can give it a shot. What makes this a bit harder to determine is most folks put this on the bottom of the list in terms of importance.

Hi kdawg - thanks for this. I really should not be posting this here, but as you will note from the sig, I am using a MSI board which works very well in OSX apart from sleep. When I refer to sleep my computer will both auto and force sleep however the problem is wake up, it always reboots.

I have two real macs and they take about 20 seconds to sleep and wake up is similar, the hack takes 5 seconds to sleep and usb key press/mouse wake the unit up but it reboots. Everything else works fine, so this issue is the icing on the cake for me.

I have no overclocking, Ram details including voltage are all correct,

Thanks

Kdawg,

two things seem to impact my idle sleep

1/ promiscuous mode/bonjour fix was not allowing sleep, i have since switched back to built in LAN and RealtekSL.kext

2/ Adobe AIR/Tweetdeck was preventing idle sleep (i could see the sleepidle messages in my console)

Idle sleep is working reasonably well for me, although it is definitely longer than the what my Energy Saver is set to, it takes about 30 mins but is set to 10. I am actually using your DSDT with your PR section removed. I wonder if your problem lies in that section specifically? I'll try the EIST fix and see if that helps

One thing I have noticed is that my DVD drive doesn't come back after sleep; i have to do a full power reset to get it back (restart does not fix it)
