Plug in an external USB drive.. 16gb thumb drive would do the trick.. Install to that.. When you get it installed and trimmed down to less than 8gb, use CarbonCopyCloner to image it over from the thumb drive to the internal SSD.. ;) I used to use that trick with Leopard on a Dell Mini9 with an 8gb SSD..

You can also select Customize during the install to de-select the excess junk not needed like extra languages, printer drivers... to cut down the install size saving yourself a step of copying back to the internal drive. Also diskutil's Restore function will work just as well as any cloning software for copying from external to internal or both ways actually, you just need to re-install the boot loader you are using as it does not copy this over.

i`ve tried some different ways to install sl to a few "8 gb" pendrives - but i was never been able to install it that small - the extraction progress is the problem - installing it on a 16gb drive and the moving it with ccc would be the only useful way to do that(most 8gb pendrives are 7,46gb - i have an oversized one with 7,76 - i used a stripped down distribution and the system should have fit easily on the big one - but no - some swapping, extracting stuff was in the way).

the pendrive installation is slow - but you can make copies of the working system before you change anything, that way you can always go one step (or more) back and try something different - i have a few pendrives and that way you can always play around with the configuration and if the system is stable, i use ccc to clone it to the hdd
