I've seen reports from people of getting their Inspiron 600m DVD drives working in OSx86. I even PMed one of the people who did so, but he had no clue how he managed it. Has anyone else gotten it to work? If so, can you tell me how? It'd bring me amazingly close to a fully working system (never gonna get my Intel Pro/Wireless or 3D acceleration on my Radeon 9000 working, so I'm not gonna worry). Thanks in advance.

The trick is that some 600M's use a NEC DVD drive and the others use a Sony. I had to return my Sony after I dropped it, but the NEC one works.

I can't watch DVD movies on it though, but it burns and I can access CDs, etc.

Almost everything works on the 600M out of the box. A minor hack and you can get the Wireless going (If you bought a Dell card instead of the Intel Centrino thing), remove the ATI drivers and you can get 1400x1050 resolution. It will even detect the PCMCIA chipset and onboard Smart card reader. Even will give you a percentage of battery life... but not how much time is left, nor will it use speedstep technology. :(

I've got one of the sony drives, and it works fine (yet to try burning...)

Don't expect to watch DVDs without Quartz or Coregraphics, I assume...

I havn't seen anyone talking about the model I have in my 600M:

It appears to be A plain ol Dell model, P/N: 8W007-A01 rev A00. System Profiler tells me its a QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242U: and the drivers are featured at dell, but only for dos/xp of course.

It recognizes a dvd title when inserted, but I'll need either advanced video support for my Radeon 9000 or get a recommended software DVD player app... any suggestions?

I will try burning soon and post my findings, but I think it will work, System Profiler recognizes its burning capabilities.
