YoYelloW
So more and more people reporting succesfull builds with the GA-P55M-UD2 and various other UDx boards for i5 and i7 CPU's Gigabyte recently released new boards that also support usb3.0 and sata3 obviously this is the future of these 2 interfaces. Im wondering if anyone tested these boards yet, for example the GA-P55A-UD3 This board looks alot like our famous UD2, but with a few different specs. Now looking at the chipsets placed on this board, it seems that its the same chipset on the normal P55 serie thats handeling the sata2 interface so ofc that will still work, the new sata3.0 is taken care by a Marvell 9128 chip, now im wondering if this will work, but most likely it will need kexts at first, and if the hackintosh scene has ever gotten any marvell chips working. USB3.0 work by the NEC chip on this board, doe anyone have thoughts about these? Im looking into buying a new p55 core i5 rig, i can play it save and get an UD2, or rpepare for the future and get a board with sata3 and usb3 on it. Please share all you thoughts and info about these new boards. lordduckx
Hey I have the new p55a ud4p from Gigabyte (and i7 860) I'm currently trying Empire EFI, which works, until i get a still waiting for root device error. I tried a couple things in the bios, plus moving around the sata ports, but nothing seemed to do the trick. I'm not adverse to doing Tony's (see post below) method, I just have to wait till I get a break from school to try it. this is my first actual build, although I have generally followed OSx86 for a while. any help would be much appreciated! Cheers I also am looking at this post ( http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1353597 ) and hoping to get information from there as well Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/197854-new-gigabyte-boards-with-30-standards/#findComment-1353598 Share on other sites

Mardig
Thanks for responding and in answer to your question, yes I am using a SATA Hard Drive and a SATA BluRay drive for this installation. I also can boot 10.6.2 when I use Tony's boot CD as a starting point, but it will not boot directly from the hard disk. I get the dreaded "Still Waiting For Root Device" error every time. I'm not sure what to try next, but I am positive someone will find a solution eventually. We will just need to be patient a while longer. Mardig
If it boots using a boot disk like Tony's then it seems to me like we already have all the parts. We probably just need someone who knows which piece is missing in the HDD boot and how to put it in the right place with the right configuration settings. I guess, what I am saying is that I'm hopeful it is solvable with today's pieces. LogicalUser
I know its not a fix, but has anyone considered setting their machine up with a Chameleon/PC-EFI based USB stick bootloader? I mean... if Boot-132 CDs work a USB stick should work just as well, and be much more permanent Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/197854-new-gigabyte-boards-with-30-standards/#findComment-1377600 Share on other sites

LogicalUser
definitely not what I was talking about, very old. I wouldn't try it with 10.6.2 hmm... there are likely a dozen various install guides around here that include a chameleon-on-a-USB stick section, really all you need is the basic method. http://aserebln.blogspot.com/2009/10/6-106...-usb-stick.html http://aserebln.blogspot.com/2009/10/7-106...-usb-stick.html those should have all the instructions you need for the initial setup. Much of the first half of the second link does not apply to your setup, as you already have a full /Extra folder with DSDT to use. (I'm unsure if you need the UUID related stuff, I'd skip it personally, at least to start) With that said, everything from here down is what you need: " To install Chameleon on the USB-Stick you must find out which disk identifier is used for your USB-Stick. In the still open Terminal run this command: [/Volumes/Chameleon] > diskutil list " with those instructions you should have a properly formatted USB stick, with chameleon RC3 manually installed. Once you do, its a simple matter to place your /Extra folder on the drive, and replace the /boot file with whatever newerone you need for a P55/i5 setup Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/197854-new-gigabyte-boards-with-30-standards/#findComment-1378455 Share on other sites
Mardig
Hi Everyone, It has been a week since the last post on this subject. I'm just checking in to see is anyone has found success running the Gigabyte GA-P55A-UDP4 or other GA-P55A series of motherboards. In particular has anyone found a fix for the "Still Waiting for Root Device" error. If you've had success or found the solution, please let the rest of us know the process. Mardig
I had success with this method: http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/01/twe...-chameleon.html Could you give us a bit more information? Did you install first with another method that left you with the "Still Waiting for Boot Device Error"? If so, what method did you use? If so, did you get around this error by setting up the boot with Chameleon in the EFI Partition? Thanks ahead of time, because any specifics you give us can help others. Mardig
Hi Everyone, I’d like to report success on a Snow Leopard 10.6.2 installation on a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P with NVidia GTS-250 Graphics. This method is 100% due to the hard work and support of Tonymacx86 who made this possible. This method uses his tools and is a near duplicate of methods he has posted in the past. I just made the small tweaks you will need for installation on this particular motherboard and video card combination. This install is for NVidia based video cards, see Tonymacx86’s forums for advice with ATI Graphics. Here is the method I used for this install: Computer Configuration: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P Bios Version: 7F Processor: Core I7-860 Memory: 4GB Video: Sparkle GTS-250 1GB (NVidia) Optical Drive: LG BH08 Super Multi Blue - Blu-Ray Burner " SATA Hard Disk: Maxtor 300GB " SATA First Buy a copy of Snow Leopard, have the install DVD available. Second ensure your GA-P55A-UD4P motherboard bios is updated to Version F7 Update your bios settings to match those from Tonymacx86's USB Method titled: OS X Snow Leopard Install using Retail DVD for P55 Motherboards and Intel Core i5 and i7 Here is the link: http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/11/os-x-snow-leopard-install-using-retail.html Next Download Tonymacx86-iBootCD.iso from the following link: http://tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=197&sid=d3b58130e6bb142548a96bae65108584 Burn Tonymacx86-iBootCD.iso to a blank CD. You will also need a copy of Tonymacx86's ##### Installer http://tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=286&sid=e04b0bbbc6ca7292f3b69d7db4cb2d42 You may want to place ##### on a USB drive or other accessible media for use in the post installation section. However, with this method, you will have a working Ethernet connection and ##### can be downloaded via Safari once the base installation is complete - your choice. Let's begin the installation: 1) Boot the Tonymacx86-iBootCD When you get to the chameleon interface, remove the Boot CD and replace with your Retail Snow Leopard Install DVD Press F5, chameleon will refresh the display with the disk currently in the optical drive. Use the cursor keys to highlight “Mac OS X Install DVD” Type "-x" with no quotes and hit enter -x forces Snow Leopard to boot in Safe mode, this is required because the boot CD does not support my Sparkle GTS-250 Video Card. If you have a different NVidia based video card, this may not be needed. 2) Once the “Install Mac OS X” dialog appears, do not click the continue button (leave it there for later) Instead, Click on Utilities - Disk Utility Format your Hackintosh destined Hard Disk as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Name the Volume “Snow Leopard” Close Disk Utility 3) Now hit continue on the “Install Mac OS X” dialog Install Snow Leopard to the new Disk labeled “Snow Leopard” After the installation program runs for about 30 minutes and shows ~10 minutes remaining, you will get a message that the install failed. This is normal, click on the restart button. 4) Boot the Tonymacx86-iBootCD 5) When you get to the chameleon interface, use the cursor keys to highlight “Mac OSX Snow Leopard” Type "-x" with no quotes and hit enter (Snow Leopard will boot in safe mode from the partial installation just completed) 6) Complete the Snow Leopard Installation After the installation completes, you are in a running version of Snow Leopard, which is non-bootable and is missing Video, Sound, and a few other needed items. However networking should be working at this point. We will now use Tonymacx86’s ##### to install the needed configuration items and then we will update the installation to 10.6.2. This installation will not be fully functional or bootable until the 10.6.2 update is installed. 1) Download ##### from the link above or copy it to your Hackintosh from the USB drive you placed it on earlier. 2) Run ##### and select the following Options: Chameleon: PC EFI 10.6 Netkas Audio: ALC 889 Graphics: NVEnabler Network: Realtek R1000SL DSDT: DSDT-GA-P55A-UDP4-F7 Extras: standard com.apple.boot.plist, iMac11,1 smbios.plist Std. Snow Leopard Kexts: fakesmc.kkext JmicronATA.kext Utilities: Kext Utility Disk utilities: Leave Defaults Unchanged 3) Hit Install and wait for ##### to complete its work - Do Not reboot yet. 4) Run the Apple software update Several updates will be available, but the only one you need now is the "MAC OSX Update Combined" 10.6.2 Check "MAC OSX Update Combined", uncheck the others and Click on "Install" 5) Once this upgrade is finished, you must restart to complete the process. You are done and now have a working functional copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.2! Remember to Thank Tonymacx86 for his hard work! dzigg
@Mardig :Wow, is the step really that easy?? A few question : - Does firework, and graphic stuff (QL/CL?) work as it should be? - Does it have the sleep problem? - Can I use ATi HD 4890 instead? - How do I make it to multi-boot with windows 7? Thx.. I'm really excited now to build a hackintosh Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/197854-new-gigabyte-boards-with-30-standards/#findComment-1419049 Share on other sites
