I bought another Flash Drive & prepared it as directed. Installed the bootloader, but it does not work. Opening it in Terminal shows the following:

Last login: Sun Jan 31 18:08:00 on ttys000

john-dokes-mac-pro:~ johndokes$ /Volumes/OSX86/boot ; exit;

-bash: /Volumes/OSX86/boot: cannot execute binary file

logout

[Process completed]

When trying to boot the computer, it stalls at:

Verifying DMI Pool Data................

Error loading operating system

Please let me know what is wrong. Thanks.

In-depth system specs please

Great thanks to mrjanek.

This is a really great tool. It works incredibly well on my GA-EX58-EXTREME.

Quick question.

When I run the install from USB to my GA-EX58-EXTREME,(GA-EX58-UD5), do I end up with a DSDT.aml for the F7 Bios? Does it matter?

Thanks

i had this same problem, what you have to do is when you go into the bios and under boot, hard drive 1st priority, but also click on priority and move the usbstick (it has to be plugged in) to the top, usually it will say 1 wdxxxxx 3fujistiyxxxxx 6 patriot usb xxxxxx so move the usb to the top and you should have not problem..

These are the options you can pass to the bootloader:

Edit /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist and add the options you want.

Options useful in the com.apple.Boot.plist file:
  "Boot Graphics"=Yes|No	Use graphics mode or text mode when starting.
  "Quiet Boot"=Yes|No Use quiet boot mode (no messages or prompt).
  Timeout=8 Number of seconds to pause at the boot: prompt.
  "Instant Menu"=Yes Force displaying the partition selection menu.

  "Default Partition" Sets the default boot partition,
 =hd(x,y) where 'x' is the disk number, 'y' the partition number.

  GUI=No Disable the GUI (enabled by default).

  USBBusFix=Yes Enable the EHCI and UHCI fixes (disabled by default).
  EHCIacquire=Yes Enable the EHCI fix (disabled by default).
  UHCIreset=Yes Enable the UHCI fix (disabled by default).

  Wake=No Disable wake up after hibernation (enbaled by default).
  ForceWake=Yes Force using the sleepimage (disabled by default).
  WakeImage=<file> Use an alternate sleepimage file
						   (default path is /private/var/vm/sleepimage).

  DropSSDT=Yes Skip the SSDT tables while relocating the ACPI tables.
  DSDT=<file> Use an alternate DSDT.aml file
						   (default paths are /DSDT.aml or /Extra/DSDT.aml).

  SMBIOSdefaults=No Don't use the Default values for SMBIOS overriding
						   if /Extra/smbios.plist doesn't exist, factory
						   values are kept.

  Rescan=Yes				Enable CD-ROM rescan mode.
  "Rescan Prompt"=Yes Prompts for enable CD-ROM rescan mode.

So I couldn't edit that plist file to say "OS X" instead of hd(x,y) (where "x" is disc # & "y" is partition #)?

Get what i'm saying?

I have got to say this is great. I do have a minor issue that I am sure someone knows the answer for. When my monitor wakes up from sleep, my screen is entirely blue. The only way to get back to the desktop is to put the whole computer to sleep and then wake it back up. Anyone?

Hi guys, I'm really struggling; hence, I'd really appreciate some advice [especially from those who have the same board]. When attempting to install, i get past the apple logo and spinning wheel -barely- then I receive some sparsely spread artifacts (which disappear soon enough *but obviously a worry*), the DVD continues to transfer files for a minute or so, then eventually complete system freeze occurs at a blank gray screen? I have tried several different methods, and the only weak link in the chain I can think of, is not using a sole drive for the install [the current drive I'm attempting to install on has 3 partitions: 2 x Win7, 1 x Mac ~ how critical/preferred is a standalone drive for install?

Oh yeah, if you look at my sig: I have already tried without OC; Removed second graphics card; disconnected other drives. Could my MB bios edition be an issue [other than that, I believe my bios settings match what other users of the forum use]? Any tips/help/advice suggestions will be very much appreciated, thanks in anticipation- NC.

Brett, update Snow Leopard to 10.6.2 with the combo update from the Apple Downloads Site. For some folks it has fixed the common sleep issue. Also type "wake from sleep" in the Google search engine at the top of this page. There is a wealth of info there.

i kow this doesnt solve the problem, but try unplugging your video cable and see if that helps, it may save you a reboot..

In-depth system specs please

I did make a signature, but I now see that I must enable it with every post. Let's see if it posts this time.

I used a PNY 8 GB Flash drive this time, but it still seems to have a hidden partition.

Hey, this is a no-brainer, No Clue! From the looks of your signature you can afford to buy an inexpensive new HDD, say the SATA 250GB or 500GB Samsung, both excellent drives at good price points from Newegg. It matters! Windows hard drive formatting and partitioning are utterly different from Apple. Some people have gotten it to work by cloning after the fact, but AFAIK not for the install. If you wish a successful installation of Snow Leopard, you will do this:

1) Vanilla Hardware - 1 video card, 1 hard drive, unclocked CPU and memory, default mobo BIOS. No external HW except mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

2) Follow the Gigabyte Guide exactly, formatting, 1 partition as GUID only, BIOS settings, etc. as specified by mrjanek in six easy steps.

3) After the install, reboot and finish the installation. Upgrade to 10.6.2. Play around - have fun with SL.

4) When that is accomplished, you can slowly add back your other components as they were.

5) Note that dual booting between Windows and Snow Leopard is not a simple task. Research it thoroughly by reading other threads in this forum. Follow the experience of others - don't guess. If you don't want to run Snow Leopard, shut down, unplug the SL drive, plug in your Windows drive, and reboot, changing BIOS accordingly.

The OP of this thread, mrjanek, specifically based his method on the original LifeHacker method. It is simple because it does not allow for much, if any, variance. If you want to do the hacking yourself, try a different method. There are hundreds available, and mrjanek over the last few months has graciously added many more motherboards at request. It is a difficult task, so if and when you are pleased, please send him a donation. I did! His work was perfect for me!

Thanks for the in-depth reply trwooley, i'll get onto it post haste and let you know how i get on. Cheers NC

P.S. Making a donation won't be an issue :ninja:

Ok, I am downloading the combo update from the apple site now. I did update to 10.6.2 using the software update earlier. I have another issue now. I just installed iLife 09 and when I boot up, it goes into the same blue screen. I have to put the whole computer to sleep and then wake it up to get back to the normal desktop just as I do when the monitor goes to sleep. Hopefully the 10.6.2 combo update will fix my issues?

UPDATE: Well the 10.6.2 combo update didn't help me. I am still having the same problems mentioned above with the blue screens.

UPDATE #2: I have fixed my blue screen issues. I was using an HDMI connection as a quick way to get things up and running. Well, I went to a DVI connection and my issues have magically gone away. ;)

here watch this video, trust me it should work...

bios video

Patrick, I am sure that our MOBOs have similar back panel audio I/O. The six six pink, green, blue, etc. analogs, plus 2 digital - 1 coaxial S/PDIF Out connector and 1 optical S/PDIF Out connector. Then I also have 2 front case connectors directly to the mobo - 1 mic input, 1 standard stereo out for headphones, etc. I have only a rear mic (pink) and the rear stereo out (green) connected, no digital toslink or coax connected. So my audio looks like this in the A/M Setup Utility. My mobo also has digital I/O headers should I ever add a audio interface card to work in my sound studio. My mobo does NOT have digital input from the back panel, only from the internal headers.

It is possible that either your optical cable is faulty or your motherboard output connector doesn't see it. Check your mobo manual for troubleshooting first. Good Luck!

Here's a snapshot from my A/M Setup:

Argh. The plot thickens. From the sounds of things, our mobos do indeed have a similar back panel for audio I/O. Everything that you have described thus far fits my system exactly. According to the manual my mobo does not support audio input via the panel S/P-DIF connections, only output. Input would have to be achieved via a 3rd party card and using the headers on the mobo just as you described. I just can't seem to get the OS to recognize them so that I can use them. ;)

I know that both my coax and optical cables are functional as I'm currently using them with other devices.

There seems to be one crucial difference between your A/M Setup and mine. I'm missing the entry for a digital out!

Update:

Turns out that the problem I was having was due to the ATI graphics card. I just happened to have a GeForce 9400GT sitting around and everything installed PERFECTLY...

except...I have NO audio :|

Other than that, everything is phenomenal. Thanks again for the loader and tutorial and I will be donating...

Oh, if anyone can help with the Audio thing that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Just wondering if anyone has any help for me on this one...

I have updated to 10.6.2 and checked onboard audio, still no sound and I'm not entirely sure why.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I tested an external USB sound card and it is working phenomenally.

With the onboard sound, it LOOKS like the sound is working, shows up in the sound preferences, etc. I just can't hear anything...

Thanks in advance...

Hey, just noticed you added the p55 support in your latest update! I thought it was going to be a couple of weeks...hope school isn't taking a hit for this.

Anyone tried the p55? I'm thinking of ordering one this week.

Best,

Michael

Damn, failed again in exactly the same manner.

* After apple logo and spinning wheel completes, I receive some small artifacts -which eventually disappear- DVD continues to perform actions, then the system hangs on a blank gray screen?

So I suppose, at least we're narrowing down what it isn't. I setup my system as per the following.

* Normal Clock

* Single HDD

* Single DVD drive

* Single G-card

* BIOS Settings as per the guide

* USB MS 7000 egornomic Mouse & KB only.

[using the 1.6v CD install]

The only thing that wasn't done as you suggested was a downgrade in BIOS [very hesitant to do this as I've had difficulty with rev's prior F8b]

Any other thoughts or suggestions? I can only assume that maybe I've a 'Dodgy': install DVD; RAM, and/or config [but highly doubtful due to extreme testing and perfect stability]; Graphics Card instability [those artifacts are a huge alarm bell in regards to that]; other than the aforementioned, I have no idea? Thanks in advance for any support/ideas, Cheers NC.

when you boot from the usb, before yo hit enter to boot off the drive, hit down, and run in verbose mode, another thing is make sure everything is sata, dont know if you drives are. in verbose mode it should tell you what the error is.

You try selecting a different output, its not like on a PC where you can use more than one. I have both front and back headphone jacks working, but only 1 at a time.

Hello, I have the following setup, GA-EX58-UD5 board, i7 920, and an ati 4850 I am using the CD install method and have tried the USB method as well and keep finding myself freezing at the same spot. I put the disc in and click enter it goes to the apple for about two minutes then it goes blank and some weird lines come up around the screen and then it stays at the white screen and wont let me do anything. Please help been trying to do this for over 2 days and am getting real irritated! Any suggestions would help!

Thanks for the reply Meatwagon. Here are the screenshots prior to system freeze...

Image 1 --> Image 2 --> Image 3 --> Image 4

The system continues to perform functions past this point, but display is unreadable? I'm a complete novice when it comes to this, so I honestly don't know what's critical, and what isn't. Thanks in anticpation, NC

G'day hero223....Hmm, that's scary, for that is exactly what I'm experiencing to the letter; common denominator, *HD4850* [well I think we can rule out the i7]?

I have tried all the other methods and get different errors and just will not boot up to SL, i LCD tried the retail install method and get a socket error.

Have you got anywhere with this? It's very irritating eh mate? I'm running OCZ memory 6gb and have taken out my network card and bt module just using a kb/mouse. Have tried cindoris method as well. Been working on this for 2 days now and this is my first hackintosh build and hopefully it's the end of it!

Hi everybody, my first post here,

what do you think about this configuration? Do I need a video card, or is it going to be ok with the integrated one? I'll use a 24'' monitor, but only work with audio, I won't play games on it...

Thank you!
