i havent injected any string into the file you mentioned,?

i wasnt sure if i had to or not,

if so, what steps to do such,

and ill try the cable swap next to be sure,

ill report back on cable swap in a few minutes

rebooting now...

oh and my cable is just a simple dvi to hdmi cable, no audio signal involved

AFIK HDMI signal carries audio......

For setting up video see Part D or Part F in section 3......

I will check back in an hour or so......have to eat some food now........ :)

hdmi yes does carry audio but only if you use direct hdmi to hdmi or an hdmi to dvi cable that has an audio input adaptor...

mine cable does not, just straight dvi video to hdmi video

ill report back as to the success of what you mentioned to me,

Hi. It's been quite some time since I last posted here. This is because I needed to backup my data disk and partitioned it to GPT.

So after partitioning it to GPT, I created 4 partitions: osxboot, osxsl, osxback, and the rest is 1 big storage partition. I installed ipc 10.5.6 to boot partition to set as booting, and to see if I can use USB method. Unfortunately, I still can mount or see any USB drives in Disk Utility. How can I get the USB to recognize my flash drive?

Because using Leopard from osxboot did not work for me. It still has the same error(installation failed). You mentioned to take a look at the error log, but I couldn't find that anywhere.

With all USB options enabled in BIOS:

OnChip USB [Enabled]

USB Keyboard Support [Enabled]

USB Mouse Support [Enabled]

Not sure for which BIOS parameter above, you can select [V1.1+V2.0] or [V1.1]....?

OR

OnChip USB [V1.1+V2.0]

USB Keyboard/Storage Support [Enabled]

USB Mouse Support [Enabled]

USB Park Mode [Enabled]

USB TD Reads [iSO Queue]

USB Periodic Data Reads [iSO Queue]

USB Asyn Data Reads [non-ISO Queue]

depending on which EVGA 750i MOBO you have......when installing iPC 10.5.6, you should choose Drivers - USB Drivers - Patched USB Drivers in the Customize menu......

When booted from iPC 10.5.6, what do you see for USB under System Profiler?

You should see:

USB High-Speed Bus:

Host Controller Location: Built-in USB

Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBEHCI

USB Bus:

Host Controller Location: Built-in USB

Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBOHCI

When you open the OS X Installer, in the Installer top menu bar, go to Window > Installer Log > Show All......let me know if you find it......before you run the installer by clicking on Continue or Install.....

Picture_1.jpg

As you can see, it only sees my keyboard and mouse.

I just found the installer log....I'll report back after failure.

I think that's the error, but I'm not sure. Is there anyway to install without the printer drivers or languages?

As you can see, it only sees my keyboard and mouse.

I just found the installer log....I'll report back after failure.

Regarding USB,

it can either not work in one of two ways or not work in two ways:

1. In System Profiler > USB, there is no High Speed USB 2.0 (EHCI) bus shown.....

2. You cannot mount/unmount USB devices e.g. flash drive on the OS X Desktop......

Problem 2. is an easy fix.......make sure that your kernel version and System.kext version are both the same......so if using Voodoo 9.5.0 then the 9.5.0 System.kext should be used......

Problem 1. is when you do not see the High Speed USB 2.0 (EHCI) bus in System Profiler and/or get error messages on bootup similar to:

EHCI Controller unable to take control from BIOS.

AppleUSBEHCI [0x5095800] unable to obtain ownership 0xe00002be.

AppleUSBEHCI [0x5095800] unable to obtain ownership 0xe00002be.

AppleUSBEHCI [0x5095800] UIM Initialize - Error Occurred.

AppleUSBEHCI Unable to Initialize UIM.

it can be much more difficult to solve.......first try the USB-nForce-Fix installer courtesy of MystiqueMac (aka Mysticus C*)......choose only the USBEHCI FIX 10.5.7 option......if after installing this fix, the USB 2.0 High Speed Bus appears and works but not all the time, then re-run the installer and install PCIFamily2.6.1.......it may improve probing/recognizing devices....BTW the USB-nForce_Fix installer also includes an installer for the MeDevil AppleNforceATA_TEST kext for SATA DVDRWs........

BEFORE running the PCIFamily2.6.1 installer, keep a copy of your current IOPCIFamily.kext somewhere safe in case your system does not like the PCIFamily2.6.1 test package.......if your system breaks, then just put the saved IOPCIFamily.kext back in place using TransMac in Windows (assuming you have Windows installed on your PC)......

If the above does not work, you will need to patch your DSDT.aml file to fix the USB problem.....especially if the same problem occurs when booting into Snow Leopard......

I think that's the error, but I'm not sure. Is there anyway to install without the printer drivers or languages?

Yes, as my Guide in post #1 says:

.....re-run the Installer BUT DO NOT choose any Printer options in the Installer Customize menu.......these can be installed after your OS X 10.6 installation by re-running the Installer from within your running OS X 10.6 system.......choose only the Base System in the Customize menu....

If the installation is successful, then once you have booted into OS X 10.6 on your HDD, use Disk Utility to repair permissions.....then auto Software update to 10.6.1 and then 10.6.2......and only then either run the Retail OS X DVD in your DVDRW OR mount the Retail OS X DVD .dmg file, to run the Optional Installs.mpkg to install Additional fonts, Language Translations, Printers, X11, Rosetta and/or Quicktime 7......

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the customize button, or rather I was in a hurry to see it. Thanks for that.

Another question - do I install the needed kexts from your "snow support files" package within Snow Leopard, and can I use kext helper 7 to do it?

No since you need those kexts present when you boot Snow Leopard.....but Kext Helper b7 is set up to install to /System/LibraryExtensions/ by default, whereas you need to install to /Extra/Extensions/.......so use Leopard to copy the kexts across manually into /Extra/Extensions/ and then repair ownership and permissions via Terminal:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /Extra/Extensions/
sudo chmod -R 755 /Extra/Extensions/
sudo touch /Extra/Extensions/
exit

As per my earlier post, use Leopard to:

1. Generate a RTC patched DSDT.aml file for SL [Part B]

2. Use Disk Utility to get the UUID for your target SL OS X volume

3. Establish OS X target HDD ownership (Part D)

4. Run EFIStudio or OSx86Tools to generate the graphics string for your graphics card (Part D)

5. Install Chameleon 2.0 RC3 (or RC4 or RC5) onto your target SL OS X volume and in the process generate a /Extra directory.....

6. Follow Part D from section (6) to (13) inclusive

7. Mount the Snow Leopard .dmg/.iso file......an installer pop-up window will appear......now click on any free-space region within the window/Desktop and then go to top menu bar and click on Go > Go to Folder......a pop-up window will appear….in the window entry box, type

Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/

And click on Go......in the next window that appears, find the OSInstall.mpkg file/icon and double-click this package file to start your Snow leopard Installation......

8. Now follow on from the last instruction in Part D section (16) to section (18)......

sudo chown -R root:wheel OSXSL/Extra/Extensions/

sudo chmod -R 755 OSXSL/Extra/Extensions/

sudo touch OSXSL/Extra/Extensions/

Is this what I should type, since I want to repair permissions for the SNOW LEOPARD volume.

Do we need to do that every time we manually copy kexts over to a folder?

Update: I'm getting that "backtrace CPU 0" kernel panic that you were talking about in your guide. But I think only because I haven't repair permissions to the Extra/Extensions folder after I copied the kexts over. How would I do it within Leopard? I've used Kext Utility as suggested by others to repair permissions, but it's still a no go.

Yes, you should always repair ownership and permissions of the kexts in the Extensions folder, or just of the kext(s) copied over, when adding a kext(s) to it......but I prefer doing so for the Extensions folder, even when just adding a single kext.......so that all kexts have the same ownership and persmissions re-set and at the same time via the sudo touch command.....

To repair ownership and permissions in Extra/Extensions/ on the OSXSL volume when booted in Leopard using Terminal, do as follows:

At the prompt type (without " " quotes)

"sudo chown -R root:wheel" followed by a space and then 'drag and drop' the Extensions folder in /Extra into the terminal window......you should then see the full path to Extra/Extensions.....

"sudo chmod -R 755" followed by a space and then 'drag and drop' the Extensions folder in /Extra into the terminal window......you should then see the full path to Extra/Extensions.....

"sudo touch" followed by a space and then 'drag and drop' the Extensions folder in /Extra into the terminal window......you should then see the full path to Extra/Extensions.....

"exit"

For the path you should see

/Volumes/OSXSL/Extra/Extensions/

The error message is indicating that your kernel has not been located and/or loaded.......unhide the system and hidden files, then check that you have the vanilla SL mach_kernel in OSXSL / directory and that in com.apple.Boot.plist in both /Extra and in Library/Pereferences/SystemConfiguration/ on OSXSL you have

<key>Kernel</key>

<string>mach_kernel</string>

I see a file in the root directory (/) of OSXSL with the name "mach_kernel", but it looks just like a plain text file. The only difference is that this file is about 17mb in size. Shouldn't mach_kernel files have a black icon with the word "exec" on the upper-left corner?

And I have checked the com.apple.boot.plist...it does have those two things you mentioned. I don't know if this matters, but I'm using the com.apple.boot.plist from the 64 bit folder of your snow support files 2.2.

update: I tried your suggestions and restarted, but it's still no good. I got the same error at loading....

Yes, it is listed as a Plain Text file dated 1 August 2009, 06:49 and is 17.8 MB in size.....

Yes, it DOES MATTER.......read post #1 about the Chamelon bootloader flags to use........because the com.apple.boot.plist from the 64 bit folder of my snow support files 2.2 has not been set up for use yet because with nForce chipset MOBOs, we cannot boot into 64bit mode until all the necessary kexts, especially AppleNForceATA are fully functional 64bit kexts.........use the com.apple.boot.plist from the 32 bit folder BUT remember you still need to add in your graphics string under <key>device-properties</key> and put in your display's natural resolution, e.g.

<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1280x1024x32</string>

Also, if you are using Chameleon 2.0 RC3 or later, then you can delete -x32 from and add -v to the <key>Kernel Flags</key> string to give as shown:

<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>-v arch=i386</string>

Ok, I've tried to use the boot.plist from the 32 bit folder, but still getting error, although it's a bit different. I've even tried to replace "mach_kernel" from OSXSL with mach_kernel from your Snow Support Files 2.2 folder. Any idea what this error is? something about (4 potential args on stack)

First re-set ownership and permissions on the kernel......

sudo chown root:wheel /mach_kernel
chmod 644 /mach_kernel
exit

Zip up your SL DSDT.aml file and PM me a link to it, so that I can look at it..........also double check your BIOS settings against the template here.......

hey verdant...

ive been away for a bit, due to pc problems,

all this installing and messing with stuff, i botched my win7 install, and my linux install,

so i hard to start over...

but i did get SL installed, and running, and as far i could tell it was in 64bit,

but i had no hardware, no ethernet, no wireless, no sound, but i had video... max res 1920x1200x32@60hz

now im going to start all over, as i tried to install some kexts for my hardware, just to test, and messed up the install,

but i have finally gotten leo running fully supporting my hardware,

and i had a retail snow leo running without 90% of my hardware working, so i guess we are gettin somewhere

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your problems.........that is why I recommend putting OS on its own HDD and setting up a 10GB OS X Leopard Boot volume at the beginning of the HDD that once working 100% is not messed with or updated apart from security updates......followed by at least two (OSX_Main and OSX_Backup), or as many OS X volumes as you want/need......e.g I have SL OSX_Main and OSX_Backup and Leopard OSX_Main and OSX_Backup volumes.....

Were you using the AnV AppleNforceATA kext mentioned in Breaking News section?

yes i used the ANV breaking news kext...

and i used chameleon rc5 pre8 and EFI 10.6

and everything was smooth running, albeit a bit slow installing from usb, took me like 2 hours compared to the usual 8 minutes of leo dvd install,

but i dont have any more d/l dvd's to use so i had to go the usb route

just cant get networking, and wifi, thats most important to be able to fix and install other stuff,

but i also did a direct retail update to 10.6.2 and rebooted and it had worked just fine.

and yes my 1TB hard drive is split into 5 partitions, the first 2 are 20gb, the next 2 are 200gb, and the rest is taken up by the last,

the first 2 20gb's are one for leo, and one for snow leo, both virgin installs so that i can boot from either, and the 2 200gb's are the actual osx volumes ill be using..

the fifth one is a fat 32 partition for shared files between the various o.s.'s

and my 1tb is GUID formatted,

What happens when you put nForceLAN.kext in /Extra/Extensions for a Ethernet network connection?

What is your Wifi PCI card chipset?

Have you got audio working OK?

nothing at all,

no ethernet connection, no network devices detected at all according to about this mac summary screen

wifi is a linksys wmp300n with BCM43xx chipset,

no audio working,

infact, no hardware really at all is working except for my video,

What happens when you use the RC3 boot file in place of the RC5 boot file?

im not to sure, i could send you my DSDT.aml and SMBIOS.plist file if youd like to look over them, if it helps,

but im just right now typing out something on my msn spaces blog, so im between the two sites right now,

lemme know what will help

Yes.....send both, together a list of what you have in /Extra/Extensions and in com.apple.Boot.plist...............

Do you really think it's the DSDT.aml that's causing this problem? Do you think I should reinstall Snow Leopard?

First re-set ownership and permissions on the kernel......

sudo chown root:wheel /mach_kernel
chmod 644 /mach_kernel
exit

Zip up your SL DSDT.aml file and PM me a link to it, so that I can look at it..........also double check your BIOS settings against the template here.......

DSDT.aml.zip

here verdant,

the exact files right from the drive, in a rar file

Put -v arch=i386 instead of -x32 under <key>Kernel Flags</key> in your com.apple.Boot.plist ......report what you see on booting.......
