Zante
Hey guys, This is my first post so first off cheers guys! An awesome site. I'll start with what I want to achieve then the background. I want to either have OS X working well on my current windows machine OR keep that machine and build a cheap OS X machine. Something small possibly with a micro atx board etc. I have managed to get OS X installed but there is no sound and the graphics drivers don't seem to work. I have a 6600gt. Personally I'm sick of windows and i want to say goodbye to it. I've had no luck with dual booting unfortunately. I would like to be able to dual boot windows so I can play the occasional game. Most of the time I use my computer for very simple tasks. What do all recommend? How could I get graphics working, how can I get sound working? SHOULD I build a seperate computer? Now just to make it easier here are the specs of my PC. 2x 17" LCD Phillips 170B's (One on DVI one on VGA) Creative sound blaster live 5.1 (the mobo also has integrated sound which maybe would work in OS X) 3GHz Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 1GB DDR Ram 200GB IDE, 250GB SATA, 300GB SATA Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Pro2 AGP nVidia Geforce 6600GT DVDRW PixelView TV Tuner Thanks! marliwahoo
The cheapest way to get something good is by using a motherboard with intel 900 or 950 built in graphics. Right now they are the only graphics that are working perfectly. Look for a cheap 915g or 945g motherboard and add a celeron. Check the wiki and or other posts. There is a lot of info of that sort here. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/18406-build-a-cheap-osx86-pc/#findComment-120254 Share on other sites
adlai
You really just want to get a Mini. It has a nice form factor and the speed is good. But the biggest benefit is not having to hack around with stuff on this forum/worrying about autoupdates breaking your install. giraid
but if you build it, you can get Pentium D and 1G ram for 599 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/18406-build-a-cheap-osx86-pc/#findComment-120279 Share on other sites
Zante
THanks for the replys. I can't really afford anything like a mac mini. I'd rather just make a few changes to my current machine. What about sound, is there a supported PCI card I could buy? I think if you go with an intel 915 board, the on board audio will work Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/18406-build-a-cheap-osx86-pc/#findComment-120285 Share on other sites
Zante
Just an update. I've got everything except graphics working properly. Well I have it set to 1280x1024 but full screen video files just don't work. Apparently ATI cards are good. What would you recommend? Maybe an ATI alternative to my 6600GT? or a cheap card i can take in and out when I change OS? Anyways, thanks all! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. The Radeon X1600s are what are in the new Intel-based macs. I have a saphire x1600 Pro working nearly 100%. I get acceleration, QE/CI, resolution changes in system preferences, refresh and rotation. These cards will give you dual displays in Windows, but only 1 display in OS X, no one has found a way to patch them yet. Look for a post on x1600, the "boris" method is what seems to work. Some other cards work too, if you want dual displays though, the only route will be a motherboard with an intel GMA 900 or 950 and an ADD2 card, google that and see what you can find. As of right now it's the only way for more than one display in OS X. I'm very happy with my x1600, good luck Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/18406-build-a-cheap-osx86-pc/#findComment-122885 Share on other sites

Im having almost identical setup with the Zante, might be thinking of moving to the dark side.. as for sound, i think you could get a usb creative 5.1 sound card and it wont cost you a bomb. If im not mistaken, it works rite out of the box ! (wishin i had one ) Look here . Look for Creative External Sound Blaster Live! My card is PCIe but there are people with AGP versions working, just check the thread on the boris solution. http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...=17767&hl=boris Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/18406-build-a-cheap-osx86-pc/#findComment-122929 Share on other sites
