I am having a new problem with my GA P55 UD2. It always takes me 3 boots from completely off to get into OSX. At the first boot, it install hangs at the line "com.apple.launched 1 com.apple.launched 1 *** Verbose boot will log to /dev/(can't remember)", and at the second boot hangs at running fsck on the boot volume.

BIOS settings? DSDT settings? com.apple.boot.plist settings? Something else?

Also, my monitor is natively 1920x1200 but OSX for whatever reason only goes up to 1900x1080, to force my Mac to go into 1920x1200 would I simply add:

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>1920x1200x32</string>

?

Why do you prefer the MacPro 4,1 to iMac 11,1? What files did you modify for that? I checked IOPCIFamily.kext but didn't see any reference to MacPro or iMac. smbios.plist is the only place where I have seen a reference to the machine name.

9980 is really impressive with no OC. I'll try removing the speedstep code and see what kind of scores I get.

I am thinking not a lot of people know about this. Let me explain. There is another kext inside IOPlatformPlugin.kext, not IOPCIFamily.kext... sorry I was extremely tired yesterday and was forcing myself to stay up. Anyway, inside of the plugins folder inside IOPlatformPlugin.kext resides ACPI_SMC_Platformplugin.kext. Inside of this are the plists for all of the Mac models. demong1 posted the modified MacPro4,1.plist here. After reading the thread I found d00d's thread regarding Speedstep fix here. It is rather good reading. This and this alone started me on the path to finally patching my GA-P55-UD3R's DSDT for USB and SATA fixes, found obviously in this thread. So, all in all, what this does is allow for native speedstepping without ANY DSDT fixes (allows AppleLPC.kext to load and activate). Look at my attached pict, CPUPMLimit is at 0x0, meaning speedstep is active.

Perhaps that's why I am getting rock'n Geekbench scores?!

CPUPlimit0x0.tiff

Fortunately for you: no it isn't the number of physical processors ,

cpus=n means the number of cores in your cpus, so i5 and i7 both have 4 physical cores (for now we won't talk about hyperthreading).

Once your setup (installation+Extra folder and other parameters) is ok, you should remove that line,

and test again with Geekbench, probably good surprise :(

Oh my. The score is suddenly 7932. Yep, that was the cause (I still have busratio=21 in there). Much thanks, rekursor and LucaM!

Just finished install and setup on my P55M-UD2 & i5.

I Used EmpireEFI and a retail disk, then did update to 10.6.2, installed various kexts, and used the myHack installer from the CD.

In the end, Sound, LAN, Graphics, all work BUT my clock is running fast, and my CPU is detected at 2.8GHz (no overclock yet)

My clock is running at almost twice the speed of the clock in my Mac Pro sitting right next to it using the Date&TimePreferences.

60seconds go by for every 35 real seconds. One of these computers is traveling at 81% the speed of light!!

HPET is enabled and in 64bit mode (have tried both). Using the DSDT.aml from tonymac's blog list.

Sleep and presumably speedstep are working and enabled in BIOS.

Flash videos seem to play fine in Safari (fully updated) so I don't seem to see any odd effects of the clock. But I ASSUME any process relying on acurate timing will be skewed (Geekbench Cinebench).

Please help! I'm trying various bios settings and cpu features to try to fix it for now. tried booting with fsb=133 to no avail.

You must use the boot file from Tony's blog and replace the one from EmpireEFI. D/L any app that lets you reveal hidden files so you can see the hidden boot file in the root directory of the HD. Trash that boot file, replace with Tony's and make invisible again. You'll be good to go and may notice that certain apps will no longer crash, or in the case of anything A/V related will no longer play too fast (and the crash lol).

Looks like Apple's getting 10.6.3 together- could be a few weeks away... Wonder if we'll end up with the same build as the i5/i7 iMacs. :(

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/12...s_x_10_6_3.html

I have been looking forward to 10.6.3 since 10.6.2 did so much for P55 users. :(

I am having an issue with booting. I successfully installed Snow on a SATA drive. I have Win 7 installed on a different SATA drive. When that drive is not connected, Snow boots just fine and runs great. When I connect the Win 7 drive and try to boot from the Snow drive, it wont boot. In fact, it doesnt even get to the PC EFI boot screen. It simply hangs before it even gets to that screen.

I have GA-P55M-UD2, Core i5 750, and Nvidia 9500 GT. Used Tony's guide to install and his modified files. Everything works fine when I boot into it.

Any ideas?

Thanks to everyone for all the help in this thread. I now have everything working on my ga-p55-ud5 (hdef/wake/speedstep) With the correct speedsteps I now get a geekbench of 10259 on an i7 870 and core temps from 75 to 82F under normal load. dsdt's on the way to Tony.

It's also safe to remove busratio=21 boot flag assuming you've updated to 10.6.2.

Yup. The 10.2 kernel supports i5/i7 so no more busratio or cpus boot flags. -_-

Fantastic! The Geekbench score alone tells me that you got things under control. Those are great temps. Is that from a stock cpu cooler?

Did you install W7 after SL?! And if so, was the SL drive plugged in?

I did not. I installed SL after Win 7 was already installed. Should I reinstall Windows with the SL drive attached?

No. That is the wrong way lol. Hmm, I cannot think of what it might be other than maybe forgetting to change boot priority in the bios? The way that has always worked for me, whether it was XP, Vista, or W7, was install OS X first, unplug the drive, boot from Windows install DVD/install Windows, then reconnect the OS X drive making sure it's the first boot in HD priority. That has always worked so I can boot using the bootloader (Chameleon 2) into whatever OS I want.

Perhaps the Windows install is looking for the SATA port id it was assigned when installed. When I first installed W7 I got the ports reversed and regardless what the bios settings were, OS X would not boot. I swapped them and all was good. Just a theory. I loath Windows and it pains me every time I have to install it....

I have roughly the same setup (SL and Windows on two separate drives). I would not attach your SL drive when installing Windows - Windows likes to mess with the boot sectors. Just make sure you have a working windows installation and the windows drive is bootable by itself. If that is the case, then you should be able to boot your SL drive and chameleon should see the windows drive.

Does the windows drive boot if it's the only drive connected?

Interesting really, I changed my dsdt to reflect all the sata ports in the profile/ioreg and I had to stick for now with the compatible device id (8126) that we all have in our dsdt.

But the true one (3b22) *is* recognized on 10C2234 imac11,1, so I guess we just have to wait and see what new enhancements we can add in 10.6.3.

I bet we can fix the cpu info and more in the dsdt :(

For everybody using a UD4P, I got sound working, front and back, with headphone switching, using the kexts in this post: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1344297

I had to install them both to /S/L/E, *not* /Extra and I used the DSDT in Tony's database. I now have sleep and functioning audio! :( I haven't confirmed whether the digital/optical outs work, but I should have time to test that some time this week.

I tried this, and now it seems I am getting sound from the Sub Woofer and the Front Center speaker, and nothing else.

When I look at the Legacy Kext in the /S/L/E folder the name is highlighted in a light blue color. Not sure what that means or how to fix that.

Yes, I read this speedstep thread too, but thought it would not apply to our new p55 mobos.

Because we do have speedstep by hardware, but maybe having speedstep by software could be interesting too so we should experiment (did you post your patched macpro4,1 plist file ?).

Something interesting I found in a recent MacPro4,1 profile is that it does not display CPUPLIMIT in the profile but does declare a new GPUPLIMIT field ... would it mean that it now controls the Graphics card speed in a speedstep-like fashion (?)

Hey guys, I've been following this threat, and I am thinking about building a P55 i7 build. I just had some very basic questions to ask:

1. In Tony's blog (http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/), it talks about the 'retail' disc. Is this the $29 upgrade disc for SL?

2. With the new Chameleon boot cd and retail disc installation method outlined on Tony's website, if the retail disc is 10.6.0 is there any need to use the modified kernel, or does it work vanilla kernel with the new boot cd?

3. Some MB with USB3 are coming out. Has anyone got a GB P55A-UD3R working?

Cheers

Thank you! Looks like I'll be doing some reading tonight ...

Does the windows drive boot if it's the only drive connected?

Windows drive boots whether the SL drive is attached or not. It works just fine. I just hit F12 when I boot and select the drive. However, the SL drive only works when the Win 7 drive is unplugged. The SL drive is the first in priority in the BIOS. It will boot fine with the Win 7 drive unplugged. It hangs when I attach the Win 7 drive.

I even tried swapping the ports of the SATA drives as suggested here with no luck. Still wont work.

This is driving me crazy and obviously reduces the use of my system if I must disconnect and connect the Win drive just to use Snow.

Any other thoughts?

Hello spinner,

Thanks for the reply. Makes me more confident of build. Could you tell me what brand of ATI 4670 you are using? Is it the Sapphire 4670 Ultimate? It's the only passively cooled 4670 that I've seen so far. I'm looking at this board too, but don't think it's being sold anymore.

Can you confirm that all the ports of your video card are functioning i.e. VGA, DVI and HDMI? No need for plugging something into HDMI to get the VGA port to work, and dual monitor possible?

Thanks

Hi tempus66

It is the Sapphire 4670 Ultimate 512MB. I got it from Amazon - UK.

Unfortunately I can't test the ports on the card as my 24" monitor is the 'value' version and only has a VGA port. So VGA is working but that's all I can say. And it is working at 1920x1080.

Hey everyone-

I need your help. I've got a few people having trouble using the new Chameleon CD Boot method with ATI cards. They're getting garbled graphics in the installer. Can any of you ATI folks test out a few Boot CDs for me? I'd be very grateful! Especially if you have a 48xx card, but any old one would do. I want to make sure that the files I'm providing work universally.

PS: If you don't have any CDRWs, you may end up making a few coasters... :censored2:

Sure, I'll try out but which ones ? I've tried Empire EFI (the ones compiled for ATI cards) but get the garbled screen using DVI. I have a Gigabyte 1gb 4850 which has dvi,vga and hdmi outputs. Unfortunately I'll get a new monitor with all inputs next month, my current one has dvi,vga but I don't currently have a vga cable. I might try to find one and I'll test your boot cd later tonight with dvi for sure.

I've read the explanation at the Empire EFI blog and it sounded to me that there's nothing we can do about it unless someone messes up with the apple installer.

Yeah- I thoguht as much- I wish I could test, but I don't have the hardware- I'd appreciate it if you'd try it- thanks! I've got an ATI test iso linked at the end of this post:

http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/12/ins...ectly-from.html

If you could, let me know if you get the same issues with the default .iso (linked at the top), and if you can boot using -x. Thanks buddy! :censored2:

Sure, I'll try as many as can when I get home later tonight.

Is there any chance you could compile a boot cd for UD2 motherboard and ATI 48xx card ???
