I had a rock-solid iDeneb 10.5.5 install running on by Abit IP35 pro quad-core intel system. Rebooted the computer today after weeks of solid uptime with no shutdowns, reboots, etc. Was prompted to install updates, which I accidentally answered 'yes' to... Damn. Update install froze. On reboot, kernel panics no matter what arguments are applied. In single user mode, I get exactly 20 seconds of command prompt before it freezes.

How can I recover without having to wipe and reinstall? Can I just boot off the iDeneb disc, mount the filesystem, and delete a few files?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Boot from your install disk. Go to Terminal, mount your disk and either delete the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext or install a disabler for it.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I booted from iDeneb install disk, got into terminal, and deleted the "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext"... I couldn't find the IntelEnhancedSpeedStep.kext file. Just for good measure, I also moved the script file in the directory titled "install at startup". Reviewing the contents of the script titled '1', most stuff looked like it was USB related.

So thanks to your suggestion, I've got my machine starting again. And the system profiler says it's at 5.7.7. But now the Processor is listed as 4 GHZ Unknown. I think it used to say something else before.

Additionally, if I click on "hardware" in system profiler, I see this message: "There was an error while gathering this information." But when I click on stuff like Graphics, Volumes, USB, Firewire, etc. it displays correct info for that stuff. Don't know what else is hosed up here thanks to my accidental upgrade.

Was interested in using Time Machine to back my System folder to its state before the accidental upgrade, but it's on the same volume as all my other stuff. Is there a way to restore the System folder without it losing everything else on that volume?

Appreciatively,

See HERE

(Place the contents of SystemProfiler in /System/Library/SystemProfiler or just the SPPlatformReporter.spreporter file)

P.S. Just a friendly FYI; most problems you encounter have already been discussed and, usually have a solution, so don't forget to search first. :D
