During a Q&A session at the iPhone/iPod touch OS v3.0 press event this week, Apple let slip that Bluetooth is indeed on the iPod touch and that it intentionally crippled it. The revelation came when some inquisitive bloggers noted that A2DP, wireless accessory control and peer-to-peer connections -- key features of the new OS -- all required Bluetooth. Apple's Greg Joswiak confirmed what many suspected, admitting that Bluetooth on iPod Touch 2Gs can be "unlocked" via an OS update.

Some are accusing Apple of intentionally crippling this key piece of iPod touch hardware as a ploy to sell its new OS. Apple is offering the new OS free to iPhone customers, but its charging iPod touch customers $9.99 to upgrade and receive the complementary Bluetooth unlock.

Haha the RDF strikes again. Another reason why I'll never purchase an apple product.

Old news, I knew about the Bluetooth chip in the iPod touch 2G long ago. It was how the iPod Touch + Nike worked.

So now Apple have unlocked it, we should be happy!

$10 is nothing, for a major update, to a $220-$400 device, which by the way, Apple charge because of accounting rules.

Apple are just Apple, they're just another corporation. I feel neutral towards them.

So now Apple have unlocked it, we should be happy!

I believe the backlash comes from everyone thinking it should have been unlocked from the beginning

As that article says, ""Apple has a choice of what to charge...". They didn't have to charge 20 dollars last time, and they don't have to charge 10 dollars this time

I think that "accounting rules" is a {censored} excuse. My PS3, PSP, and Xbox 360 have been upgraded time and time again, for free. Not just minor fixes either, but adding new features, such as the ability to play certain codecs

Also, when iPods start shipping with 3.0, will the price go up?

I don't think it's a big deal. Look at how much Verizon cripples their cell phones...all the fun features are pretty much useless! So crippling one feature in order to support an improved software rollout later isn't that big of a deal with that perspective. Apple needs to make money like any other company. Like Synaesthesia said, Apple is Apple and Apple is a corporation. What matters is the people and enjoying the products. Read my "Apple 99% Rule" article if you want a laugh:
