Hey Im new here and this is my first post...

Did anyone get to run Parallel Workstation on a cracked Tiger 10.4.5 Pentium PC? It would really be cool to build a Mac for $199 and set it up so you dont have to use windows anymore but if you do, just start up Parallel and run it right from your Tiger desktop.

I know PArallel runs on real Intel Macs, but does it work on PC Macs under 10.4.5?

Anyone?

:)

Testing under OSX 10.4.6 with Myzar's patches.

It's still a little quirky in my tests with Windows Server 2003. Everything works, the mouse is a little jumpy, I wouldn't yet use it as my everyday Win box. But, as the beta proceeds, I see new versions every few days, and it is getting better. By the time the beta is finished, I am sure it will work great.

Parallels-2.1.1658.58 will not even install on my nforce3/athlon64 hackmac. It claims that my computer does not meat the program's requirments. I'm using Myzar's 10.4.5 dvd installation.

Maybe there is a value that can be changed in the installer script to bypass this check. Any ideas where I should start looking? Has anyone else encountered this problem? Since, Parallels installs kernel extentions, I'm very nervous with toying with a system that works great (and when the driver gods enable nVidia HW accel.... wheeew!).

Installed on mine at the moment I am installing XP (upgrade) from cd had to swap cd during install for 2000 disk but at the moment seems to be installing ok just had to remove 2 files from the install file and modify info.plist

could not copy the drivers for the SATA disks from floppy as OSx does not see ATA floppies

will try to copy them manually later and modify the boot.ini file If I can and boot straight into my existing install

Will keep you posted

This does work on AMD check specs below

Hopefully there will not be a problem for activation either with clean install or old install due to significant hardware changes that possibly could be seen with running in VM

Does not see any other hard drive installed on the machine

Does not load the drivers for VGA display card

Does not reconise installed hardware ie- TV tuner card

Unlike VMware that ran on M$ where you could access some level of bios when booting this does not seem to have the feature possibly why It does not fully function as a windows enviroment

Will try more reasearch

Very incomplete application (beta).

Pros:

- very responsive compared to Q and other application

- no errors installing WinXP Pro full version and Win 2000 Lite

- Linux using current kernel version no problems

- supports large window resolution

- higher full screen resolution support

- bridge networking support

- folder sharing between host and guest

- TBA

Cons:

- needs access to host physical drives

- needs access to host USB devices (almost there)

- Linux version creates transparent guest window using Linux/Xgl/Compiz due to composite

- needs guest/host transparency. ie. drag files from host to guest desktop and vice versa

- TBA

* disappearing mouse due to video driver (not app's fault) Enable mouse trails under mouse properties.

If they fix all my cons, then I will also buy the OS X version. You can install on a FAT32 partition and have read/write access from linux, windows, and OS X.

Beta 5 out and running. Had to upgrade the tools which is stated on the docs. Problem is the mouse disappears. There's a little trick under the mouse properties. Turn on mouse trails and move the slide bar to short. You should now have nomore problem seeing the mouse.

I think it has something to do with our drivers and refresh rates. Everything is moving forward except the graphics drivers area. Lets hope the guys working on the drivers come through.

has anyone got internet access from inside xpsp2 i have P beta 4 and even though I get a network connection and can "see" my powerbook yet not access it I can open up explorer and go to the web or drag files from my other drives It wont see my second hard drive which is fat 32 with all my antivirus apps and the like

You seem to be talking about 2 things.

1. internet access

2. network access.

What do you mean drives? Paralells can not mount drives yet.

Upgrade to beta 5 and share your home directory to the guest. then copy the files you need to your home directory subfolder. Go back to the guest OS and open My Network Places and you'll see the new network.

As far as internet access, I have been posting alot of things here under Firefox in the guest OS.

sorry

I have a router and it sees the VM network card as 192.168.0.7 as i set it to that manually. It sees the actual OSX machine as 192.168.0.3

so the network works fine and yes upgraded to 5 and enabled the share folder option and it even sees my other hard drive and mapped a drive ok

now my only real problem

how in the VM for XP am I suppose to get access to the internet ?

The computer has internet access through the router ok but the VM of XP even though it is in the same network does not get internet access. I am a bit rusty with XP.. I am sure it works when i simply dual boot on the same system and dont remeber having to set anything up special. Firewall is off in XP

I am probably missing something simple seems from what u say u have access ok to the net through the vm

hope that was clearer.. there forums are down which doesnt help much

okay first thing you need to know is the terminologies, or else we all will get lost.

- Guest OS = VM for XP

- Host OS = OS X

1. Check your router and see if it's blocking any network connections going out.

2. Check your Host OS and see if it is firewalled. if so, turn it off for now

3. Post a screen shot of your guest network settings

4. Don't use manual IP for now. Try using dhcp to acquire the IP address from the router.

Got it thanks

i had it at manual because it wasnt working at auto but I did not have the gateway ip

setting in the appropriate place so i somehow missed that and it is away !

thanks alot.. Now if i could just get a less jerky video it would be quite usable.

it is exactly the same as setting a windows box up.

yes u get network access but you also need to allow it in the settings to have the address of the gateway.. it is probably missing and most gateway addresses by default are 192.168.0.1

check it in the Windows settings down a level or to in the network setup. Youll see several option like the adaptor, printer and file sharing then the tcp/IP setup go into the properties there and check under DHCP and make sure the gateway IP is in there correctly. I am doing this from memory I just normally open up the little network icon from the task bar next to the clock and get to it that way.

Thank you for your reply.

I allready have this setting in the gateway and DNS still not working, see this pic:

top left box in picture set it to auto in mine are u sure there is no firewall setting in xp on or maybe in your router ? seems a little wierd

Download beta 6, under xp guest, set everything in network preferences to auto config and upgrade Parallels Tools. In OS X host, disable firewall. In Palellels config editor, use bridge ethernet and make sure you have the correct NIC card chosen. Also make sure you router isn't blocking your new virtual OS IP addrss.

Edit: another way is to assign a dedicated IP to your guest OS in XP. Also manually type in the dns server (router). Make sure no other computer in the network is asigned to your virt OS IP address.

Parallels is very, very fast. But not on your tiny, little, beige boxes.

You need to get a processor with Vanderpool (virtualization) technology, to use all goodies, that Parallels brings.

And when you ran it on iMac or MacBook (and probably on any Core Duo, and 8xx/9xx Pentium D processor with VT) it pretty damn fast. And it works truly awesome!

Thanks Bomino and Slipstream!

Just to be sure that the router doesnt cause any problem, i dissconnected and now I have a real IP se the pic, but its the same problem. And I do have the latest version beta6 with tools installed. Could you be kind and post your setting and config so I can compare?
