Desktop icon grid

is there a way to change the desktop grid? i do not like how there is so much room wasted when more columns are needed... for example:

 

 

is there a way to resize it? i tried making teh icons smaller, but it still created a large gap between columns.

Just change it to not snap to a grid... That's all I can think of...

the picture up there: that is actually how the icons will be placed when they are downloaded or arranged by type.

 

if its set on snap, i can manually move them closer in actually... like this:

 

 

that is what makes me wonder... why is it that the "grid" has small boxes, but does not occupy them all when new files are created on desktop.

The text size of the icons will control how close the icons are placed together..

yeah, i had already tested the text sizes. i tried both the largest and smallest.. same results =\

 

could there be anything else that could be messing it up?

Changing the size of the icons themselves will alter the grid layout, as well as their respective label text size.
