I did a fresh install using Digital Dreamer's latest 3.5 script w/ Chameleon 2 bootloader and then did a combo update to 10.5.7. So far so good. Everything seams to be working 100% except for the items everyone has to manually change for system profiler in the various strings. My question is for any ATI Radeon 4870 owners out there. After 10.5.7 it worked perfectly with everything enabled, resolution change, dual display etc. The ONLY problem is once I put the computer to sleep the display and computer go to sleep just fine, but upon waking the display won't come back on. This is the ONLY problem I have had (so far) and it's just annoying that I am basically one step away from a perfect i7 install. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Your system is almost identical to mine (using a 512mb 4870). In truth, I haven't bothered with the sleep mode thing, because I know I had the same problem with 10.5.6, and probably still have it with 10.5.7, but I plan on turning sleep off. The thing worth mentioning is that this is a known issue, from pre-10.5.7, and it's been discussed at length and I'm pretty sure a lot of folks found solutions. Bad news is you'll have to sift through this whole thread (and maybe others) to learn what to try.

I'd be interested to know how you managed to get System Profiler to report hardware info (accurate or otherwise), as well as what you did to get all eight cores working, as these are things I lost with the upgrade to 10.5.7 (while gaining resolution change and QE/CI), and as far as I knew, it had been decided that we need to wait for a new hack before those things would work properly in 10.5.7 with the UD5.

10.5.7 update failed with black screen then my monitor goes into sleep mode.

heres what i did, on HD#1 i have ideneb 1.4

boot up with hd#1, Run DD 3.5 script and install retail 10.5.5 to HD#2

update combo to 10.5.6 to HD#2

boot up with chameleon 2.0 on HD#2, everything works good.

download 10.5.7 combo and update.

reboot

now my PC just goes thru the kernel fine but no video just a black screen after kernel stuff then goes to sleep.

i tried with -x -f -v nada!

please help!!

I'm sorry I should have said I manually edited the SMBIOS for System Profiler. As far as 8 cores I wasn't aware there was a problem. I just checked the Activity monitor and opened the CPU USAGE window and all 8 bars are there, as well as when I open Logic Pro 8 all 8 bars are there as well in system resources. I assumed this meant all 8 cores were working, but perhaps it doesn't? I don't really know I thought the activity monitor showing me 8 bars meant all 8 cores were working. Perhaps I am wrong?

Edit:

I just transcoded a small file in iMovie, as well as bounced a track in Logic Pro with the Activity Monitor CPU Usage window opened, and indeed all 8 cores were in action when I performed both tasks so I assume they are working, unless I am missing something

This bears repeating. Two things you might want to try: 1) Installing the older Chameleon over your 2.0. 2) Using a different DVI port, if applicable. I had to do both of these.

You recall what modifications you made? Maybe that's all I'll need to do to get hardware info and all cores working.

No, that should mean it's working. You just had better luck (what else can we call it?) than I did with your 10.5.7 install. I'll have to keep a lookout for potential fixes.

So I was little pissed off at how my cased looked in terms of cables all over the place. Been meaning to get a better case and finally got around to it today. Check It out

BTW anyone know a better way to run the graphics card power, it been bugging be how it just sticks out there.

Let me know whatcha think

WOW, very roomy. I don't think I have ever seen tower put together so neatly. I need to study this picture...I have wires everywhere lol. If you find anyway to get those video card wires out of the way let us know please. Having the two on my 4870 just sticking out there is just REALLY in the way

my ati 4870 only has 1 DVI port.

very strange i went back to 10.5.6, went and followed the ati 4870 forum guys to install the ktext, rebooted with -f -v..

everything was good.

i hit shutdown.

started it back up, now it goes blue, then immediately black screen then goes back to sleep on my monitor.

now i can't get to my X on 10.5.6 either. any suggestions?

sapphire ati 4870, with 10.5.6, using retail dvd install using DD's 3.5 script w/ Chameleon 1 (was using 2.0 then switched to older)

everything works fine after i follow the instructions from this thread: on getting ATI 48xx working on 10.5.6.

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=155477

after i either install NTFS-3G.dmg or after a few reboots/shutdowns. my screen goes lightblue, immediately black then goes to sleep mode, the kernel loads fine.

i can boot with -f -v -x and that works fine in safe boot.

can someone advise me whats going wrong here? i am very confused!!

sapphire ati 4870 has 1dvi port, 1 vga port and hdmi. i am only using the dvi port.

You may have to get a HDMI->DVI adapter and try that HDMI port. It sounds ridiculous - and it is, really - but this is a known potential fix, a-la the "simple guide" thread for ATI cards. As for being confused... don't get me started. ;p

Is system profile supposed to show 2 CPU's and 8 Cores?

Because right now mine shows 1 CPU and 4 Cores...does that mean my performance is halved? Geekbench still reports 8 cores.

well, unless you found a way to get your hands on one of those ASUS 2xCPU boards they are working on... and bought two i7 CPUs, then you only have one CPU and 4 cores. (the i7 is a quad core chip).

Your other 4 "cores" are hyperthreading technology.

(edit)

apparently you can buy the dualies now - theres my next build!

all I did was change my memory code from 19 to 24 (DDR3), and I renamed my PC from MacPro4,1 to MacPro3,1

Oddly, I just made these changes and I still can't get anything to show up under hardware. Is there a different file I should be editing, besides /Extra/smbios.plist ?

CPU-X shows I have 4000Mhz x 30. I haven't overclocked my 920 yet.

I am sorry, I am still very new to this so I am probably not as much help as I wish I could be to you. I took the smbios.plist and pulled up it's info and edited it so I could read&write to it. I then changed my memory code from 19 to 24 which changed it from DDR2 to DDR3, and I changed the name of my system from MacPro4,1 to MacPro3,1, as the "MacPro4,1" has been shown to cause problems and in previous posts a lot of people had also changed theirs. None of the changes went into effect until I rebooted, and then I then saw all the changes in the System Profiler

OK, I just installed CPU-X and it is showing my core speed at 3000Mhz (I have my i7 920 overclocked to 3.0 Ghz). And a multiplier of 9

Take a look also to thos topic from Netkas http://netkas.org/?cat=7/

It's very good for all kind of 48xx cards !

:D

I've tried different versions of Digital Dreamer's script. I've tried 10.5.6 and 10.5.7. Everything is working fine, except sometimes I get Kernel Panics. I use to get one when I try to install MS Office 2008. Anyone has experienced it? Any solution?

The system works fine, but I don't know why I get those KPs. I install retail OSX from Kalyway using DD script.

My system configuration:

GA EX58-UD5

6 GB DDR3 OCZ 1333

Geforce 8600 GT (EFI Strings)

Intel i7 920

ps: Hey MAJ, what is your BIOS version ? Cannont update your Bioles profile from the front page because of dismatching BIOS version. Thanks.

I'm on F7, now.

Gotta love those 8-cores .. pushed Geekbench up ... now 14K+ ;)

thxs

Man, you're up to 4.2Ghz on that system!!

Since our two machines are essentially the same, maybe I just need a copy of your smbios. ;p Or the text in a code box.

USB ports doesn't work when i boot up. i noticed a very strange problem where when i'm booting up, when X (video) loads in if i move the mouse then my mouse stops working during that time (keyb works). if i happen to move the keyboard then the keyboard stops working (mouse works).

quite strange problem.

Your kexts are messed up, I am guessing you have the wrong system.kext, some one else correct me if im wrong.

when we use DD's 3.5 script with our ex58-UD5 motherboard and 10.5.7, are there any kexts that i can remove now?

also where do we remove the kexts? in /Extra/Stored_Kexts? or in S/L/E ?

thanks!

I installed retail osx 10.5.5 from my mini 9 with on to an external sata using DD's script step 4, then ran the update package for 10.5.7. then ran the script again steps 2,3,5,6,7 and booted with my EX58-UD5. it is working with my 12 gb ram, but only shows 2 cores, my mac identifier is 4,1. any suggestions?

eSATA not working

Everything is working for me now EXCEPT the eSATA port on the Gigabyte mobo doesn't seem to be recognized. I plugged in an external caviar black hd that I have in an eSATA enclosure and the hd is not showing up on the OS X deskptop.

Are there any kexts that I have to install or is there a specific setting in the Bios that I have to enable? Thanks.

EDIT: The eSATA drive shows up on the OS X desktop if I have the drive turned on before I boot the computer. It doesn't show up if I'm on the OS X desktop and then turn it on.

I have the same problem with 10.5.6, the drive needs to be on during boot... then the intel SATA controller sees it... even though its on AHCi - I think its to do with the modified IONetworkingfamily kext (or whatever one changes the orange icons back to internal - not the block injector)

I have the UD3R board with an additional 2 SATA ports from a gigabyte SATA chip that I set to AHCI in the bios, and they work properly as hotswap.

---------------------------------------------

Anyone else notice that the online 10.5.7 update is 289mb and the delta download is over 400mb? (and the combo is over 700!) ?

I think its because I have my mac reporting as a MacPro4,1 so its trying to give me a different update... I only mention this because a lot of people have a lot of different models reporting, and there was some speculation awhile back if apple really does tailor the updates to your specific model... they apparently do now!

Anyway... I re-imaged my i7 drive back to 10.5.6... and I'm skipping the 10.5.7 update... I'll wait for 10.6 -- too many problems on the i7

My Q6600 is running fine under 10.5.7 though.
