mac kid from jersey
You're assuming wrong We don't have any problem with our Ram. Perharps do you have too much I've already imported more than 20000 photos without problems (using iPhoto). The only problem I've got was with some RAW files. My advices: 1) There is known probleme with 32 bits OS... which can address only 4 gig. Remove some RAMs (<= 4 gig) and try again. 2) remove the raw files from your photo directory I shoot only RAW .. but i'll try to see if this is the issue. EDIT: Better yet ... i'll convert them on my macbook and then transfer them. andycorleone
Hi MAJ. Are you saying the first partition that is selected when the bootloader comes up is the 0s3 partition? Yes Chameleon 2 might be a little confused here. Try adding this in your boot.plist and report back: <key>Default Partition</key> <string>hd(0,1)</string> I added that in the boot.plist where leo is installed right? because EFI partition don't load. I just did it but no effect I know because I put a longer timeout in the EFI boot.plist. I tried to copy paste all the files from disk0s1 to disk0s3 but some files don't copy Do you know a way to Clone the files ? Make sure the hd ID is correct. I don't like this setup, because if you get it wrong or add another drive, the wrong partition will be selected. Make sure you don't have Silent Boot enabled, so that you can always select the proper partition in the bootloader, particularly when the default selection is invalid or non-bootable. I see the HD ID from disk utility but sometimes when I restart the order change this is my boot.plis from intall partition (Not EFI but the one in efi is the same) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Default Partition</key> <string>hd(0,1)</string> <key>Graphics Mode</key> <string>1920x1080x32</string> <key>Kernel</key> <string>mach_kernel</string> <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string>busratio=20 -v boot-uuid=6EF4C440-1F29-4C54-828F-E6A7C966EE0D</string> <key>Timeout</key> <string>5</string> <key>device-properties</key> <string>d20300000100000001000000c60300001500000002010c00d041030a010000000101060000030 01060000007fff040014000000400032002c006e0061006d00650000001100000073656e736f722d 06172656e74220000005600520041004d002c0074006f00740061006c00730069007a00650000000 0000000000002036000000400032002c00680077006300740072006c002d0070006100720061006d 073002d00760065007200730069006f006e00000008000000000000021c000000640065007600690 630065005f0074007900700065000000100000004e5644412c4765466f7263650e0000006e006100 d00650000000f0000004e5644412c506172656e7422000000400030002c006400650076006900630 65005f00740079007000650000000b000000646973706c6179100000006d006f00640065006c0000 01f0000004e5649444941204765466f7263652039383030204754582044444c22000000400031002 006400650076006900630065005f00740079007000650000000b000000646973706c617912000000 00032002c007200650067000000080000000000000222000000400032002c0064006500760069006 0065005f0074007900700065000000120000004e5644412c6770752d64696f646520000000400032 02c0063006f006d00700061007400690062006c0065000000160000004e5644412c73656e736f722 706172656e7422000000400032002c002300730069007a0065002d00630065006c006c0073000000 80000000000000020000000400031002c0063006f006d00700061007400690062006c00650000000 0000004e5644412c4e564d616314000000400030002c006e0061006d0065000000120000004e5644 12c446973706c61792d413a000000400032002c0068007700730065006e0073006f0072002d00700 6100720061006d0073002d00760065007200730069006f006e000000080000000000000226000000 00032002c0023006100640072006500730073002d00630065006c006c00730000000800000000000 0114000000400031002c006e0061006d0065000000120000004e5644412c446973706c61792d4220 00000400030002c0063006f006d00700061007400690062006c00650000000e0000004e5644412c4 564d61631e00000072006f006d002d007200650076006900730069006f006e000000090000003331 73261100000004e00560043004100500000001800000004000000000003000c00000000000007000 00000e0000004e00560050004d000000200000000100000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000</string> <key>Graphics Mode</key> <string>1920x1080x32</string> </dict> </plist> I restore from my Time machine so I boot my other leopard (not Raid ) I mount disk0s3 and then install chamaleon Installer ( this is the only way I can find to have a bootloader) but I have a few problem: 1) not sound but I have a USB sound Card 2) Some softwares craches when I copy Paste text 3)only way to see my Camera RAW files is in lightroom when I select them in the finder the finder window crash. that why I preffet to have the EFI method Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/24/#findComment-1125706 Share on other sites

Luckily I have my Macbook Pro still operational.. it's just a lot slower than this hackintosh.. I think Aperture is using the builtin RAW conversion in OSX. I'm thinking the issue could be found there? mangopeach
I'm freaking out. I can't get passed step 1 (install kalyway/ipc). Everytime I try and install either kalyway 10.5.2 or iPC 10.5.6 its a no go. The system: UD5 - f6 bios / AHCI and native mode enabled - junk drive for distro 36gb sata 150 raptor (old school) - proper drive for retail install plus EFI - velociraptor 300gb - sata DVD-RW - all drives connected to intel (blue sata ports on MB) in AHCI mode I have gotten all the way through booting from DVD for both kalyway and iPC and installing I am formatting the junkdrive GUID I selected voodoo (iPC) / kabyl (kalyway) the problem comes once i finish the dvd install to junkdrive and reboot (even after hard power down) post first install boot error message: kalyway 10.5.2 boot0: GPT boot0: HFS+ boot0: booting boot0: doneH0000000 HFS+ partition error iPC 10.5.6 System config file ' /.com.apple.boot.s/Library/Preferences/SystemCOnfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist' not found. this is lame because i have spent a couple days now on this and this is supposed to be the easy part. I must be checking off the wrong boxes, need to use a different boot loader, or something. Am I correct in not using the white JMicron sata ports on the MB? I have everything set in bios like our good friend the author of this thread. memp
I'm freaking out. I can't get passed step 1 (install kalyway/ipc). I suggest you remove disks that you don't need for the first install. Personally, I couldn't even make it to the installer with iPC... I would definitely get myself a retail DVD (or image thereof) and use wolfienuke's script. You might still have issues with one component or the other, but at least the boot process will be reliable. I've experienced "still waiting for root device" and numerous problems similar to yours with any other method. memp
The general consensus is that the bootloader is at fault. Unless my memory is failing me, I don't recall having sleep issues until I upgraded the bootloader from PC-EFI v8 to v9, and now to Chameleon v2 RC. Are there any using the old v8 bootloader on the boot-132 setup having sleep issues? I wouldn't think so. Please note what BIOS you are running, as well. I'm not sure about this. I remember using wolfienuke's v3.1 script with his kexts. I only added NVinject and I might have updated voodoo to 9.6.0, but I don't think I did. I tried sleep 2-3 times and it worked perfectly. However, I had problems with audio and graphics, so I went back and replaced everything with your kexts, used plist strings for my 9800 GT, and I also definitely replaced the kernel with the 9.6.0 version. I've never managed to get my computer out of sleep ever since. All this performed with F6. I would assume that the bootloader was identical in both setups. It might be the kernel or one of the other kexts that are different between your two packages. Or I was just lucky the first few times... I currently have just the dvd and junk drive plugged in. With wolfie's method you dont need a working mac to set it up? Am I confused about this? Is there a way to just do this once? I have a retail leopard 10.5.0 dvd that i bought when it first came out. I just tried installing iPC 10.5.6 again and its the same problem... system config file ...apple.Boot.plist' not found. i wonder if i'm not checking the right drivers in iPC. I'm choosing voodoo/seatbelt 10.5.5/ich10/9800gtx. To all that have gotten iPC 10.5.6 working on your UD5 what drivers/kexts did you select from the distro? --sincerely going around in circles Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/24/#findComment-1126065 Share on other sites

The command that's actually executed by the script is: diskutil list | grep "DISK_NAME_ENTERED" Try it in terminal. It should return a single line, but it returns nothing, so the script thinks that the drive is missing. Reason is probably a typo (space at the end or two spaces in the middle or something) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/24/#findComment-1126097 Share on other sites
feng'a
Hi All. Just thought I'd post my results and the steps I took (after wading through this monsterous thread ). I have everything working except hardware accelerated Core Image and Quartz Extreme. I suspect it's a 'difficult' video card (8800 Ultra). I do however have 1920x1200@32bit over two 24" screens (dual view). My process is as follows. 1. Installed iPC 10.5.6 PPF5 Final onto 2.5" SATA HDD. 2. Installed driver for Areca ARC-1222 with 4x1TB disks in RAID10. 3. Mounted 10.5.6 DMG and ran OSInstall.mpkg (took me ages to find out that I had to do that!!) 4. Ran wolfienuke's EFI script with the new kexts that DD put in his post and also copied over my NVinject and ARC-1222 kext. 5. Shut down and unplugged SATA 2.5" drive. 6. Rebooted and presto. Welcome and set up your KB please. My H/W is as follows: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel i7 920 12GB Corsair 8-8-8-20 DDR3-1600 Areca ARC-1222 SAS HBA with 4 1TB WD GP 32MB Cache HDDs in RAID10. LG BD/HDDVD Combo Drive Asus 8800 Ultra 768MB What is working: EFI Boot! Retail Install Audio Dual View @ 1920x1200 each G15 KB w/ G5 mouse H/W RAID What isn't: CI and QE with the 8800 Ultra. Tried a few bits and pieces with the 8800 ultra and I may just cross to either an 8800GT or one of the ATI 4870s just to get it working... but aside from that, it's lovely. Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Hope my post can help others too Cheers. bernito
In the interim, I reformatted the drive (disk 1) and named the partition Mac. Tried running the script again with the same result. feng'a
Trying to add a second HD with retail install and I keep getting: "Mac OS X is either missing or not a valid volume name." when I try to answer the first question in the RUN-PATCHER terminal program. Not sure why? It is a newly GPD formatted drive and the first partition is called Mac OS X. Any help would be appreciated as this is my second hack and I haven't run into what should be such a simple problem to solve before. That's interesting cos mine did that too but I thought it was because of my RAID controller/pack... so I gave up on that way. memp
wait i thought we needed to use two disks to do either install method. Sorry, yes, you need another Mac (PPC or Intel) for this... Try to boot from one of your distro DVDs into the correct HD partition, hit F8, then type "rd=disk0s2" (assuming GUID with Mac OS on the first (non-EFI) partition). If that brings up the installer again, use disk1s2. You can also boot into the Kalyway installer, then open Terminal from Utilities menu. Your volumes are mounted in /Volumes. You can find out where that boot.plist has gone... I have everything working except hardware accelerated Core Image and Quartz Extreme. I suspect it's a 'difficult' video card (8800 Ultra). I do however have 1920x1200@32bit over two 24" screens (dual view). I have a different card (9800 - G92), but NVinject didn't work for me either (no OpenGL). Neither did NVdarwin. With NVKush everything worked. Currently I have the device property set directly in boot.plist. This also works. (google for efi strings) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/24/#findComment-1126131 Share on other sites

I had a quick look at EFI strings yesterday, but didn't have time to play with anything. Will post my outcome, and probably do a reinstall (I tried NVInstaller, and it dumped a whole bunch of stuff into my Extensions folder. ) A potential problem with the 8800 ultra is that it's a G80 chip Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/24/#findComment-1126139 Share on other sites
digital_dreamer
I figured out why I couldn't load the 9.6 kernel. Some people had issues with the wrong seatbelt kext. All I had to do was change the name of the kernel reference in the boot.plist from mach_kernal.voodoo to just mach_kernal. Maybe this was obvious to others but I'm still learning. So for fellow noobs, if you're trying to update wolfienuke's fantastic script with the latest kext and kernel, don't forget to edit the boot.plist. Now...if only I could get my wireless adapter working I'd be in great shape! That was the first thing I checked (the mach_kernel name) when you mentioned you couldn't boot. But, I had forgotten wolfienuke's script expects it to have the .voodoo suffix. Thanks for the heads up on that. I had renamed mine to mach_kernel some time ago in an effort to get VMware Fusion running. I'll rename it back to .voodoo to be compatible with wolf's script. Guys like you are a real asset to the community with your ability to work through these issues. I'm using the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5. Here is my config: 1 x Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 2 x mushkin 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) for a total of 12 GB of ram (all mem slots filled) 1 x Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 1 x COOLER MASTER V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - Retail 1 x EVGA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB PCI Express 2.0 x16 in PCIe slot 1 3 x Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB Hard Drive in ICH10R slots 0, 2 and 4 (the back most slots ... the ones closets to the chasis 1 x Western Digital Raptop SATA v1 1.5 GB/s in the ICH10R slot 1 1 x Sony Optiarc Black 2X BD-ROM SATA Model BR-5100S - OEM in ICH10R slot 3 I installed using the 10.5.2 kalyway distro onto the digital raptor. boots fine with modbinkernel -f legacy -x kernel flags. I tried to use wolfnukes script but it kept hanging at boot during the mdnsresponder portion. I reformatted the drive and then did digital dreamers installation script using a retail 10.5.4 disk, did the combo update and then did the post patch. I had to do the post patch after the security updates as well. I changed the Ram speed in the boot string as well as my memory is 1333 and not 1600 ... i'm not sure if that matters. I've done the bios updates as well. I first had version f4 and then upgraded to f6b. No over clocking at this time. I'm running the voodoo 9.6.0 kernel. EFI String for graphics card via OSX Tool. http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/122157 Apart from iphoto and apreture crashing on import, I must say that it's quite stable. EDIT: I've run memtest86 from the fedora cd for a few hours with 0 errors. Really good work! Those Geekbench scores look great for stock speed. You have graphics mode listed twice. and shouldn't it be 1920x1080@32 .. not 1920x1080x32? Don't use the refresh rate argument (The "@" is for refresh and I wouldn't want 32Hz ). I've never had success with that setup. I can't remember, but with Chameleon 2, it either immediately reboots or ignores it. In fact, I've found that you can't get by with just the resolution, but need to include color depth, as well. In PC-EFI v8 and v9, we could input 1280x1024 and be fine, but now you got to have 1280x1024x32 I tested it a bit further - yes, it seems to be a RAW conversion issue. Everything works fine as long as you don't touch RAW files. Unfortunately I only shoot RAW, I need this feature. Luckily I have my Macbook Pro still operational.. it's just a lot slower than this hackintosh.. I think Aperture is using the builtin RAW conversion in OSX. I'm thinking the issue could be found there? Wow. Just tried this out and you're right. Odd, as I was working with RAW on my D70 just a month ago. I only shoot RAW myself. So, what changed. Doesn't look like your BIOS is looking at the right partition or drive for booting. Make sure the BIOS is set to see your boot partition. regards, MAJ Open terminal and type "diskutil list" enter, see if it's there. The command that's actually executed by the script is: diskutil list | grep "DISK_NAME_ENTERED" Try it in terminal. It should return a single line, but it returns nothing, so the script thinks that the drive is missing. Reason is probably a typo (space at the end or two spaces in the middle or something) I will try your suggestion, tx. The wierd thing is the tutorial says "This name will be checked against what's available on your system, even if unmounted." I have tried other drive names on my machine and get the same result. The script doesn't seem to recognize any volumes, irrespective of whether they are mounted or not? Hmmmmm.. That's interesting, indeed. I haven't figured this one out, yet. What version of bash is in Terminal? type BASH (enter) What version appears? (bash-3.2$) Sorry, you're having trouble with this. This isn't something I anticipated. The script should ignore any leading and trailing spaces, so that shouldn't be a issue. Upper and lowercase are ignored, as well. Can you try using underscores, instead of spaces in your drive names? Did you try, as memp suggested, the following in Terminal? diskutil list | grep "ANY OF YOUR HARD DRIVES" Additionally, could you put the diskutil list in code tags, so we can see all characters? BTW, when you change the HD name, you don't need to reformat. EDIT: Okay, I think I know what's going on here. Basically, as memp alluded to. Because you have several partitions that have the same prefix 4 "Mac", 2 "Mac OS", and 2 "Leopard", the script returns more than one result to try against. Since the first try is not a match, it fails. Ouch. Okay, back to work... All I can suggest now is to use unique names for the install, then rename when finished. mangopeach
I got iPC 10.5.6 working with ethernet / sound / and decent video. So now that i have a slopintosh drive its time to get the professional install going. I just made a dmg from the retail disk. Time to read and read and re-read again all the instructions and comments. Maj or other fellow overclockers... did you do all your overclocking and stress testing (burn in) first before doing the retail install? What software does serious stress testing while also monitoring system temps at the same time? I put the "ultimate boot cd 4.11" on a thumbdrive which has stress test software on it, but no temps. What are y'all using for cpu tuning? It just seems smart to get all the overclocking out of the way prior to doing the retail install +wolfie... andycorleone
I can boot my RAID Disk using Chameleon (but have some many problem loading the right Kexts) I really need help in install EFI (not Chameleon) Software RAID 0 if some one have a succefull history with the x58 board I really apreciated if he can post the steps. I manage to install: 1)EFI from EFI Studio in the partition Disk1s1 BUT get this when I boot: 2)also tried to install "EFI Partition Boot Installer" mounting Disk0s3 and select the OSX_BOOT as install partitition. I get the same as above . I think the problem with this last one is the installer think Disk1s3 is the Leopard install instead of my RAID install so maybe I need to modify some files in this EFI partition. I also tried to manually add the RAID ID to the boot.plist. but not joy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149505-guide-retail-os-x-install-1058-on-gigabyte-ga-ex58-ud5-core-i7-mobo/page/24/#findComment-1126312 Share on other sites

After your create the software raid volume in disk utility, you have to use the disk name of the RAID volume itself and not of any individual disk in the raid. Personally, i didn't like doing it that way until i'm certain i could get OS X setup correctly. Right now, I just have single disks for the OS and a RAID volume for storage and backups (for better time machine throughput). Wow. Just tried this out and you're right. Odd, as I was working with RAW on my D70 just a month ago. I only shoot RAW myself. So, what changed. Has anyone tried this RAW photo processor? I can't try it now because I'm at work. rafa3d
I can boot my RAID Disk using Chameleon (but have some many problem loading the right Kexts) 1. If chameleon is running from RAID is a good thing. 2. Important to edit de plist with the right RAID ID. Open Diskutil, go to the RAID volume and it´s the RAID ID, not the universal ID. 3. I edit everything directly in the RAID, I mean, the plist in: sudo nano /Volumes/raid120gb(...your volume)/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist 4. Also with OSXUtils insalled all necesary KEXT. 5. Rename mach_kernel.voodoo for mach_kernel (and edit plist) 6. Right EFI strings for video card. 7. Repair permission reboot. I know, I am little savage editing directly in RAID volume, but i dont know other way. Tell me. Right EFI strings for video card. what is this? The one in the com.apple.Boot.plist I created my for my 9800GTX so I'm pretty sure is fine.
