Dell Vostro 220

Just got a new Dell Vostro 220s. At first I wasn't able to boot either iATKOS 5i or iDeneb v1.3. Then after typing in CPUS=1 at the option prompt, I was able to get it to boot. Later I got kernel panic so I figured it has something to do with the CPU. I went in the BIOS and turned off SpeedStep & Intel C State tech options and got it to installed. But the video card I have GMA 4500 does not work so now I have to buy a new video card to get the rest of this install. The error "waiting for root device" after the reboot means that you chose the wrong driver for the SATA. It needs to either SATA or AHCI matching your BIOS setting. (This is for iATKOS 5i not iDeneb)

 

I will continue to post the rest of the install instructions. I prefer iATKOS 5i since there are more options to configure. If you have the same Dell Vostro 220, please post your problems/fixes here.

Also look up the Dell 530s, it's the same computer, in white form. At least it is right now, when it first came out over a year ago, it was AMD based and was seriously incompatible with OSX.

Any luck with this? Just got my Vosotro 220 from Dell and am trying iATKOS 5i. Got it to boot with cpus=1 as you did.

 

If I can't get through this I'll be trying XxX_x86 next.

 

It might be helpful to know what chipset we have in the Vosotro 220. I'm downloading Ubuntu now but it's going to be a while. Does anyone already have this information?

I've made some progress on the SATA issue. In th iATKOS installer's customize section I have tried both the AHCI and non-AHCI intel SATA drivers. I no longer hang at "waiting for boot device" but I do hang a bit later. I'm not entirely sure what is causing it though.

 

(I also make the AHCI/SATA change in the bios depending on which kext I selected).

I'm giving up on this for today. The last error I got was this:

 

kernel[0] display: Not usable

 

I'm thinking that despite other errors, osx IS booting, it just can't do anything once the display fails. I tried the GMA950b driver but still no luck (although I didn't see that same error again). I'll have to come back to this once I have another graphics card to throw in there.

@Sam-i-am: Are you to the point where it would work if you had another video card? I'm running an X1300 in my PCI-E slot just because I couldn't find any support for the onboard video on a G45 chipset.

Not yet - but I keep trying. I've mainly tried with iDeneb and iATKOS. I can install the system and get it to boot most of the way, but I just don't know enough to troubleshoot so I keep doing the trial and error method. ICH10 stuff *should* be supported, and everything *should* work minus the built in video. I have an NVIDIA 8600 GT that I threw in to try to solve that problem, but I'm not far enough along yet.

 

Seems like someone was able to get it working with the built in video at 1024x768 (can't find link) - so I'm pretty sure it's possible.

I am thinking of swapping out the motherboard for something like the Asus P5GC-MX/1333 Motherboard here-> ASUS P5GC-MX/1333 - motherboard - micro ATX - i945GC.

 

Any thoughts? I figure that should solve some issues.

I also just got a dell vostro 220s and I am using iATKOS, every time I install I keep getting a kernal panic. I am pretty new to this, sorry for asking such question. Can anyone give the optional settings I need to select so it can bypass the kernal panic. I will be using an ATI 3450 HD. After a few hours of playing and reinstalling the system multiple times I finally got it to work. I am running a Dell Vostro 220s , 3.0 Ghz wolfdale, 2gb of ram, and one 340 gigabyte and 1 terabyte hard drive.

 

I bought my dell originally with Intel HD4500 which I was having trouble OS X recognizing with iATKOS 10.5.5, I could of have the option getting the AMD ATI Radeon 3450 from dell, but found the same card at Neweggs for a cheaper bargain, its an Asus ATI Radeon HD3450 low profile video card, it cost $19.99 + $5.00 shipping.

 

iATKOS had optional 2xxxx and 3xxxx driver in the installation option, I put that and got it to install, it took about 30 minutes and it worked. It recognizes my ATI card and I also have the possibility of changing the resolution in System Preference Display. I using VGA output. I am still trouble with the HDMI to support the full 1080p resolution and I havn't got a chance to test out DVI.

 

Quartz support hasn't worked yet and I can't get it to wake up from sleep mode. It also still takes a long time to boot up and I havn't got sound card to work. Hopefully someone will find out someday.

 

So, I hope this post can help some of you who having the same problem. I just wanted to comfirm that ATI Radeon 3450 does work in the Dell Vostro 220s. Best wishes

Please let me know what version of OS X you used as well as what settings you clicked under customize to make it work. I was able to install OS X but received kernel panic every time I tried to boot into leopard and gave up. I am also using a different video card, but not a 3450.

I remember that PCguys post said to do CPUS=1, I did that but it was slow and cpus=2 went faster. I got it to work with CPUS=1 for all installation and running. I think both works, not sure if it matters.

Disable Disabler.kext, Enable Remove Power Management.kext <--- this might be the main reason you keep getting kernal panic, I did to until I enabled it.

 

Install the proper hardware drivers, for me ATI HD 2xxx and 3xxx.

 

Install intel AHCI SATA and install SpeedStep.

 

Once the installation restarts, follows the first post by PCguy other than cpus=2.

 

I also got HDMI to work, I figured out that you need to have VGA cable plugged when booting up every time, after that it detects VGA, it recognizes HDMI. It takes me about 5 minute to fully log into OS X and I can't figure out a way to make it faster. I also don't have any sound drivers install, so I am still looking on that. Thanks. I think I figured out the sound drivers when I went looking for them but it was a while ago and I can't seem to recall what they were. They are out there somewhere though I know that much.

 

I found what I had posted:

 

I'm now using iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF5 Final. I'm running an X1300 because the integrated video isn't supported, so I have natit_ATIauto kexts downloaded already for after I finish installing. I also downloaded the drivers for the Realtek RTL8111/8168B off Realtek's website so I should have ethernet. Now all I need to do is figure out the sound (ICH10 HD Audio??) drivers. However, this is all just in theory because I haven't even ran the disc yet. I'm also going to be making sure I check the ICH10 Sata drivers compatibility in the chipset options. Is there anything else I should have to change/that anybody knows before I give it a shot in the morning?

Grabbed iPC 10.5.6 and with normal boot options, I was good to go. You must have an external pci-e card in here since the GMA4500 looks to never be supported. I got a low-profile GeForce 7300 from a friend. After I got into 10.5.6 (no hiccups from a standard path you can find well documented here), I enabled the latest NVidia drivers and bam, we were good to go.

 

To install, disable all CPU options. I Was able to install w/o changing the SATA transfer mode, however.

 

The only trouble, like I had in Linux is this odd sound card it has on-board. The actual chip is a Realtek ALC662 rev1, that seems to _not_ be compatable with previous implementations of the ALC662 codec work (on both mac and linux). After a few more hours, I tried voodooHDA (from 20090422) and--almost like windows--a reboot did the trick! I have only tested 2-ch audio from mp3s so far but it plays very nicely.

 

Hope that helps others with this setup since its a great machine for cheap.

Nice did you get it to work with Core image with hardware support and quartz extreme to work? How many megs is on your video card? I still can't get mine to support core image or quartz extreme, I have an ATI HD3450.

 

I am using iATKOS and I got my sound to work VoodooHDA, thanks for the info. I still can't wake from sleep either without doing a restart. So I am wondering if iPC has a fix for that. How long did it take for fully boot up into OS X? Please let me know. Thanks.

I'm going to take a closer look at the logs after my next reboot and see if I can come up with anything.

 

I also set my timout in boost.plist to 3 instead of 5 to see if that helps.

Okay my original install was with iATKOS. I was able to upgrade from 10.5.5 -> 10.5.6 without any problems. What's the likelihood that I will be able to go to 10.5.7? My feeling is that it will work, but better safe than sorry.

 

Edit: Okay so I went ahead and ran the combo updater. 10.5.7 is now up and running just dandy. No problems.

I've got a Dell Vostro 220s (dual-core E5300). I know the GMA onboard graphics isn't supported so I snagged a GeForce 8600GT and have tried installing iAtkosv4 and v5 as well as iPC.

 

I disabled all the cpu stuff, installed the Intel AHCI sata and Geforce drivers, removed powermanagement, added speedstep and also tried every possible combination of these things.

 

No matter what I do when I goto boot it just stalls. Usually after the IOKit initializes and waits.

 

UPDATE: I switched out the graphics driver for nvinject and got the GUI to load. But now Im stuck again. It comes up with the unrecognized keyboard screen and asks me to hit certain keys but it never registers the button presses! I don't know what I need to do to get it to recognize...

 

UPDATE 2: I went to try to fix disk permissions using the installer and found that my mouse wasn't being recognized. I went to the bios and reset to factory defaults. Changed the settings mentioned earlier and installed without any problems! It's now running great!

You need to get your hands on an install disk of some kind. Either iAtkos or iPC. Just search around from there and you'll have to use bit torrent to actually download them. Then follow the instructions included. When/if you have problems come back with them.
