Dell Vostro 220

I've got a Dell Vostro 220s (dual-core E5300). I know the GMA onboard graphics isn't supported so I snagged a GeForce 8600GT and have tried installing iAtkosv4 and v5 as well as iPC.

 

I disabled all the cpu stuff, installed the Intel AHCI sata and Geforce drivers, removed powermanagement, added speedstep and also tried every possible combination of these things.

 

No matter what I do when I goto boot it just stalls. Usually after the IOKit initializes and waits.

 

UPDATE: I switched out the graphics driver for nvinject and got the GUI to load. But now Im stuck again. It comes up with the unrecognized keyboard screen and asks me to hit certain keys but it never registers the button presses! I don't know what I need to do to get it to recognize...

You need to get your hands on an install disk of some kind. Either iAtkos or iPC. Just search around from there and you'll have to use bit torrent to actually download them. Then follow the instructions included. When/if you have problems come back with them.

You won't screw up your PC by failing to install OS X. You can always install windows if it doesn't work. It seems that most people in this thread buy a new graphics card (I got a GeForce 8600 gt) and thats the least you have to do. After that try iPC, turn off all the advanced cpu settings in the bios and see if you can get it to install and run. If it doesn't work then try iAtkos.

I've been looking at why it takes 10 minutes to boot and my console log is filled with errors about speedstep. I don't really understand why the instructions say to disable speedstep in the bios but then to install it in iAtkosv5i. Am I missing something? Should I uninstall speedstep if its disabled?

 

 

Also, for anyone with graphics problems try installing NVkush. It seems to work very well on my 220s.

I too have one of these machine and am using the iPc flavor, I dont have any video card other than the add on in the box which is an ATI Radeon x600. I did not see the drivers for this in the package, and am installing OSX as we speak on this machine.

 

Does anyone have a customizations screen shot as to what to select? or is it pretty much plain install as suggested by ehunt123

Not sure if anyone is interested in going this direction.... but I got the retail DVD to install from boot-123. Currently I have no audio and ethernet but I havent really looked around. About the video, I had an extra 7600 GT laying around so I'm using that. NVkush detected and configured it without a hitch. QE/CI everything worked out of the box.

Oh and yeah. I had to disable all my advanced CPU features to get it to boot. Kinda sucks that one of it's core is diabled but it seems like its running okay.

Hmm.. okay. Turns out the clip on my ethernet cable snapped off and the line was slightly ajar. That was the only reason why I didn't have internet initially (oh the minor human errors...). Ethernet works out of the box on a retail install, I can confirm this. Shutdown/Reboot works fine, Sleep doesn't but I can definately live with that. Audio, as ehunt123 stated, I got working by installing voodooHDA. Heres the problem though...

Normally I rush to update once its determined to be remotely safe, but the sheer volume of "it looks like 10.5.6 on upgrade" -- {censored}, my system doesn't work was rather large. I'm still on 10.5.6 here.

 

I deleted the IntelCpuPowerManagement.kext and have started to move things over to /Extra, since I'm on Cham2. So far so good. I still have a 5-minute boot up but the system works great.

 

VoodooHDA with the Info.plist edited so verbosity is low is still working great. I only have 2ch speakers and headphones but both ports work fine. Rest of the system has no kinks.

 

Since 10.5.6 works fine and you can edit packages to work around the 10.5.7 requirement of some of the things (iphone3sdk), I'm going to wait until SL to upgrade.

 

I'm still learning on the Cham transition so I do not know what has to be in /Extras beyond the basic IOACHI stuff put there. A reliable post did say the disabler/etc from voodooprojects has to be there. It also mentioned that a proper setup would have everything there, stock smbios and dsdt.aml generated. It looks like ICH10 support was added into the 10.5.7 kernel so im not sure if the older modded drivers enabling 10 from 9 released back in October are needed.

Ok. Well, Like i said, I dont know exactly what to do, and there arnt much tutorials in this thread... You said get iPc, thing is I have a Nvidia Geforce 8400GS. Now that doesnt even show up in the picture some 1 posted some posts above.

I have no idea what do check even if I did get Nvidia.

 

And even if I did get it to run but some luck, then I find out that my sound isnt working or my mouse isnt being recognized or i couldnt get my internet up or something I wouldnt know what to do. And im only 16, I have NO idea what I can do, and I cant ask my parents because they wouldnt know also. This this forum is basically dead.

And I cant call dell for help, is there ANY 1 willing to help me with my system specs posted above? Maybe we can talk over MSN or something? Please guys i REALLY want a mac os on my comp !!!!!

A: A kernel panic is when the computer stops working and an error shows up saying you need to restart. If this happens, reboot and try again. You may need to mess with your install settings to get it working well.

A: Yeah, just google it and download. It has a handy tool to auto-detect drivers and download them, you shouldn't actually need it but just incase...

After a weekend... I'm rollin with net, 1600x1200x30 resolution (no quartz extreme tho with the onboard video) and audio workin.

 

I used iPC 10.5.6.

Setup bios by turning off Enable Multi-core in advanced. and disable speedstep.

 

On the install I used these options:

 

Base Install

Kernels -> StageXNUKernel

 

Do the install... Mine kept saying at the end that it was unable to make Macintosh HD a boot device...

The computer reboots, use -f -v on the boot loader. It will reload the kexts

 

It will take a while to load. Once it loads the onboard network card just works but we need drivers for the audio.

 

Key: Let the index finish for Spotlight

 

first, we want the resolution to not be retarded (1024x768x32)or wahtever non-sense it starts with.

Open Terminal

 

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

put in your user pass

 

Using the arrows, navigate the cursor to <key>Kernel Flags</key><String>"Graphics Mode"=1600x1200x32</string>

Put in the Graphics mode part... to save hold down control, hit X, hit Y to save modified buffer then just hit enter

 

Now lets enable the other CPU so we're not just rocking with one core.

To do this... we have to edit a DSDT file and remove the CPU aliasing... then we have to install an updated boot loader that will allow us to overwrite the bios stuff with our new DSDT file.

1.) go http://www.osx86.es/?p=610 and download DSDTSE and open that once its finished.

2.) Once its loaded, in the apple menu go to Tools -> Extract DSDT once it loads you'll notice a bunch of code.

Starting on line 21: make that function (the {censored} within the brackets) look like this

Scope (_PR)

{

Processor (P001, 0x01, 0x00000810, 0x06) {}

}

 

So you've removed all the aliases and allt he other {censored}.

 

Then click on Compile DSDT button, save it. Once it compiles, it will bring up a window with a bunch fo text in it saying the compilation was successful, close that window and finder will open up and show you the new dsdt files.

Highlight those two files and move the to the Root of your boot drive...

 

Once thats done, we need to install a new boot loader that will use that file instead of just the bios.

in finder, mv boot (was chameleon) to the root of your hard drive then go back to terminal

Update: I was able to get my hands on a Geforce 7300gs made by Galexy: nVidia Corporation G72 [GeForce 7300 SE]

I have dual monitor support and QE / hardware acceleration. I had to do some hacking to get it to work right though.

 

I had to use some information from a modified NVInjects' plist in the natit v2 dual monitor support to get both to work.

 

I uploaded the kext here hope it helps
