Perceval l'Hylien
Hello everybody ! I'm currently building an iMac G4 (too expensive in one part ), and I'm a bit worried about the fact that most of G4 logic boards are using USB 1.1, which will be a trouble for use (ie for my iPhone). Of course, I have no money to buy a 2.0 logic board and I'm searching for ideas about putting some 2.0 controllers into the iMac G4. - Where is the USB controller on the logic board (I don't have any now), and the brand ? - What about using the IEEE 1394 as a potential port to emulate a USB 2.0 port ? - Any other idea ? I'll keep searching and I'll post results Thanks for any help Note : I'm building right now a cheap 800MHz 15" iMac G4 using a GeForce MX4 (yep, NOT the MX2 ! ) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/147925-imac-g4-usb-20-capable/ Share on other sites
scottishduck
USB 2.0 is backwards compatable so your iPhone will work. Unless you are simply wanting 2.0 for the speed benefits? Perceval l'Hylien
No, iPhone works only with USB 2.0 port In fact, I'd like to implement 2.0 support to use that Mac without any restriction ; USB 1.1 is now dead, 2.0 is the current version and USB 3.0 is coming ; so if I don't try anything now, that iMac will be useless... Konami®
How the heck you are building a G4 logic board? Do you know electronic circuit? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/147925-imac-g4-usb-20-capable/#findComment-1048208 Share on other sites
Perceval l'Hylien
ahah no I don't build the logic board of course, I mean I buy parts and I assemble it (case, hdd, bluetooth card, ram, etc). Of course I can find a 2.0 compliant board, but it's too expensive and... rare. I try to get high def pictures on the web to find out the controller. Yeah in the US you can find Luxos at very reasonnable prices, but here in France... Don't expect a first generation (15" 700Mhz 256Mb of RAM etc) for equivalent of $300 I'd love to buy one within the US, since the power management automatically switch 110/220V (60/50Hz, like the G3), but shipping cost it too high I'm currently bidding on a faulty G4 on eBay, I hope to get it, and have a look on the board to check the USB. As I could see on pictures on the web : the bridge is closed of the ports, and looks there are two controllers. But I can't read what's written on them so... I keep news once I have Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/147925-imac-g4-usb-20-capable/#findComment-1051500 Share on other sites
Perceval l'Hylien
So, here are the news ! I now have two logic boards running USB 1.1. I've been searching for the controller but I didn't find it yet... Perceval l'Hylien
hum, so I don't really understand why, but it appears that the 2.0 luxos are using a 16-pin PSU connector, when the usual USB1 ones have 14 pins... I don't understand why it would have two more connectors, since USB don't need more power to work from 1 to 2.0 But it might be used for the high-end luxos, ince they need more power for the PPC, the GPU and the fan, so it should have nothing to do with USB. I keep looking Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/147925-imac-g4-usb-20-capable/#findComment-1073740 Share on other sites
