Hey guys,

I wanted to post a success story - and thank everyone on this forum. I'm a noob to osx86 and this forum is great.

And, maybe this could be a mini-HOWTO for people with the same hardware. At the moment, my machine is running Leopard 10.5.6 with full QE/CI. I've been running it for two days straight without any issues, played WoW for 4 hours yesterday, etc.

The information I found here is invaluable, you guys are awesome. For newbies having a hard time, site:insanelymac.com is your friend!

Hardware:

Asus M2N-32 SLI Deluxe

3gb RAM (Corsair 800mhz)

NVidia 9800 GT 1024MB (PNY)

Steps:

1) Obtain a copy of iPC 10.5.5, and apply the PPF2 update to it (otherwise Darwin will hang, waiting for a root device). You could also do PPF3 now that it's released.

2) Boot into the CD normally. My drives were connected to the NForce onboard SATA.

3) Set up your drives. I have Windows installed on a separate drive; I dedicated an entire drive to Mac OS X. Make at least two partitions: one for your main install, and another for a failsafe install. I made mine 15gb. The utility/failsafe drive will prove to be totally invaluable, unless you really dig single user mode and/or installing things (I found it was faster to reinstall in the case of hoseage rather than diagnose the issue, especially if you don't install any language options).

4) Install iPC normally, with the following options turned on:

Drivers:

Latest nvidia drivers from Macbook Pro

JMicronIDE (You'll get hang/errors on the first reboot otherwise - at least, I did)

RTL8187

AppleNForceATA (I used the normal version, not the test)

ALC888

I didn't install any SMBIOS patches or the patched bootloaders.

Other stuff:

Install all applications

Make sure to check off translations unless you need them. Also, DO NOT install any ethernet drivers. forcedeth-v or forcedeth don't work, see below.

5) Reboot, AND MAKE SURE TO BOOT with -f, by typing it into the bootloader prompt.

6) Now is a great time to make a backup image of your install. To do this, run Disk Utility, select the drive you installed (not the partition), and click Restore. Drag the drive you installed into the Source box; drag the drive you are using as your failsafe into the Destination box, and click Restore. After this, this drive will show up in the bootloader, and you can boot off of it in case your main install gets hosed up.

6) Use EFI Studio to generate a EFI string for your card. Select the GeForce 8800 GT 1024MB, click Add Device, then click "write to com.apple.Boot.plist". Reboot.

7) Hopefully, it works! Now you can freely enable Quartz Extreme (I used OSX86 Tools to do that). Reboot again.

8) On a separate computer or a Windows install, download eno's nForceLAN driver http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=125569 - I used 0.62.11n, 0.62.10n had weird issues for me (cable disconnected when it was actually connected, etc)

9) Install the kext. You can do this however you like; I used OSX86 Tools.

10) Reboot again. Hopefully, now, everything is working!

I hope this helps anyone who has this board! And thanks again, everyone, for all the great posts.

Hey guys, just thought i'd throw my 2 cents worth..

I have to agree with Discordant about how good insanely mac forums have been on my way to success with 10.5.6..

I've got a Gigabyte X38 DS5 with Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz with 4G OCZ Ram and 8800GT 512 MB

I used a retail install and then patched with voodoo kernel and used EFI for graphics. Once i knew what i was doing there was minimal messing around with the final install Everything works perfectly to the point where i'm confident enough to pull out the temporary iDeneb drive i used throughout install.

I'll dot point the basic steps, All other info u need is all over this forum.

1. Install ideneb on a temorary HDD and boot up from it

2. open disk utility and format your main OSX disk.

3. copy the OSX Install Disk image to your ideneb desktop.

4. show all files and folders on your ideneb installation.

sudo -s

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles true

5. Find the installation packages folder on the OSX install image and open OSINSTALL.MPKG

6. Install to the OSX drive

7. my version was 10.5.4 so i downloaded the 10.5.5 combo update and installed it.

8. run post-patch

9. Install EFI/Chameleon Bootloader and reboot.

10. Check everything to see if it works. install EFI strings etc. then reboot again tho check.

11. Reboot to ideneb once your system works.

12. download 10.5.6 combo update and install on OSX

13. Post patch with 10.5.6 kext pack.

14. reinstall EFI/Chameleon. Reboot

15. Install voodoo kernel and ALC 889A kexts and you should be running smoothly (after voodoo kernel there is a smal patch to do that fixes dmg errors)

Kext helper and OSX86 Tools are very useful and so is having the second drive with a basic packaged install eg. ideneb, kalyway etc.

finally after a week of trial and error i get my

m2n32-sli deluxe

4gig ram

9800gtx

working perfect

at first i was running 6gigs of ran with nothing but problems. Kept getting kernel panic, video card issues, nothing seemed to work.

Here the ? after figuring out that the 6gigs of ram was the culprit for my f'd install. I have put the remaining 2 gigs back in. Osx86 works great, program, WOW but when i try to install a pkg. all i get is the spinny beach ball. I have now just stayed with 4 gigs of ram with no known issues. Pkg. installer works just fine and all apps.

Does anyone know of a fix to run 6gigs of ram or what could be causing the spinny beach ball with 6gigs?

Wait did you get it working with a 9800GT or the 8800GT?

This thread was helpful, thanks very much.

M2N-SLI Deluxe

Geforce 7600 256MB (XFX)

I used iPC 10.5.6 PPF5 final.

ALC888 did NOT work for me, so I installed AzaliaAudio after the installation and sound worked after that. (edit: probably since the M2N-32 SLI is different than the M2N-SLI... duh.)

My DVD burner is still a little on the sketchy side. It recognized an audio CD fine, but not the install DVD. Perhaps that's simply because of how it was burned (Vista, speed, etc...) but I need to experiment more first.

And I couldn't get my PS2 keyboard to work, but http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.js...oductId=2103747 works very well and is a few dollars cheaper than a new USB keyboard, at least locally.

Discordant I have a few questions for you concerning your install as I have the same motherboard.

How many audio channels do you get with ALC888?

And also how did you install to SATA? I've never been able to do so...

Also did you use GUID or MBR?

and one more. I'm guessing SATA DVD drives if you have them don't work with the AppleNForceATA since your not using the TEST version?

Also you may want to edit your original post as there are some typos that make it confusing.

finally after a week of trial and error i get my

Try this: AppleNForceATA over 4gb RAM bug.

Hey guys!

Is there someone who got 8GB RAM running well in Leo with M2N32? I've read the topic "AppleNForceATA over 4gb RAM bug" and installed new AppleNForceATA (0.1), but I still cant boot in Mac OS without maxmem=5100. When I set it to maxmem=5300 or more, desktop freezes right before the wallpaper and mouse pointer should appear. No kernel panics, just blue screen...

I've got 3 SATA HDDs and IDE DVD-ROM (primary master mode).

Thanks!

P.S. Booting in safe mode (-x) seems to work - all 8GBs is visible by OS, but disabling all kext which are not loading in safe mode and booting in normal doesnt give any positive results.

Mate you are the best! I haad so much issues trying to connect via ethernet and mind you I have the same motherboard as yourself. After so many hours lost I finally done everything as you explained and now I have NET.

The only thing that I cant get working atm is the icons in the dock moving as on a real apple machine. I have a EN7950GT 512ram video card. If you have any ideas please let me know. Other than that you made my day.

Thanks!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the same motherboard (M2N32-SLI) with 2gb ram and xfx 8600GT 256mb XXX (the special edition) - I also have the option to try with a 9800GT 512mb.

Using iPC 10.5.6 ppf5 Universal and I can't find a way to make my video or onboard ethernet work.

The video defaut res is 1024x768... I managed to make it work once but the mouse got bugged just because of that. I saw a "mouse lag" thread but that's not my case... Here I can't use the mouse... it's buggy.

My ethernet never worked... I did a lot of research and tried a lot of things. Most of them will keep my system from booting again and I have to reinstall the sytem =(

Anyone to help me?

Thanks!

Hey which azalia audio package did you use? I have the same m2n-sli deluxe motherboard as you but i cant find the package.

Are you absolutely sure you have the AppleNForceATA kext installed with no other conflicting kexts?

sudo -s
chmod -R 755 Extensions/
chown -R root:wheel Extensions/
touch Extensions/
rm -rf Extensions.mkext
diskutil repairpermissions /

boot using -f

Its a little overkill but will cover everything.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have iPC 10.5.6 running on a M2N32 de luxe as well - basically fine expect 2 things:

1. Cold-Boot: I cannot do a straight power-on boot into OSX (get a black screen, nothing happens). If I booth into Vista 1st (just a few seconds) and reboot into OSX - it works.

2. Sleep&Wakeup: Sleep works & and it wakes up but I don't get display back (it stays black) - but OSX is up. I can login remotely ! (tried various hacks to get around this ... no success)

Now both things might have to do with graphics-card - its a 8800 GTS 640MB - and I use EFI-Strings. (QE works fine).

Any ideas ? Driver ? BIOS Settings ?

thanks
