The board isn't yet available through a quick search and I can't find more than a press release on ASUS's site so I can't check the LAN and Audio chipset but.....

Anyone else care to comment? All I can say is too bad it doesn't have EFI and TPM from what I've read so far, otherwise it would be the perfect choice for a near-term future proof solution provided the LAN and Audio chipsets are compatible...

It is now, prices start at about $140:

I really do not think anyone here needs TPM, but EFI is different story. I am wondering when Intel is going to release a Yonah board.

I do not think this board is really future proof as Conroe is suppose to require a different chipset like the 965 and a 775 socket, not 479:

I have this board with a Core Duo T2400 @ 1.83 GHz.. I bought this combo for exactly those compatibility reasons.. But for some reason it doesn't seem to be all that compatible at all.. After install, in the middle of the registration process it freezes at the point where you enter your personal data: The screen turns blue and all that's left is the mouse cursor. Tried 2 install dvds and different kernels and patches with no positive result. If anyone recognizes the problem suggestions are welcome.

On the Merom support: The Merom (or future Core 2 Duo Mobile) processors will be backwards compatible. The i945GT chipset in the Asus N4L-VM DH mobo as well as the other Intel 945 chipsets will support Merom. It was also proven by Fugger at the forums of xtremesystems that the Intel Mac Mini can be upgraded with this chip.

so you want to say that all 945 chipsets (including one i'm going to purchase - Intel D945GNTLKR) will support core duo and core2 duo?

one more question (as i couldn't figure it out) - core and core2 is meant for the mobile devices, but will there be core processors for desktop pc?

and by the way ASUS P5LD2-VM is considerable choice for mac osx.

Yes, the i945 chipsets support both Yonah (the current Intel Core mobile chips) and Merom processors (the future Intel Core 2 mobile chips). Watch the word mobile there! They have the same socket 479 pin layout. So as long as your mobo has a 479 socket with either a i945 or i975 chipset you're ready to go for these processors.. Good thing is that the Merom is gonna be a 64bit chip whereas the currenty available Yonah has the drawback of not having that feature. Both Single (Core Solo / Core 2 Solo) as well as Dual Core (Core Duo / Core 2 Duo) is supported.

Here's some links for your reference on the backwards compatibility for the future Core 2 Duo MOBILE processor:

Mac Rumors

Fugger's proven Intel Mac Mini update thread

From intel's website:

"Intel is developing a mobility-optimized, dual-core processor based on the new, state of the art, Intel Core microarchitecture, codenamed Merom. The Merom processor will work within the Intel® Centrino Duo® mobile technology-based platform and Merom is targeted for introduction to align with the 2006 holiday buying season."

On a tradeshow an Intel representative also showed that the Merom chip is backwards compatible: "During a separate briefing, Intel's Mooly Eden showed a benchmark pitting a Dell Core Duo system against the same system with a Merom processor (Eden literally swapped out the Core Duo CPU and stuck in a Merom processor, partly to showcase its backwards comptability)."

one more question (as i couldn't figure it out) - core and core2 is meant for the mobile devices, but will there be core processors for desktop pc?

Core is actually going to be the new main name for Intel processors as Intel is gonna drop the Pentium name. So it's not only meant for mobile processors but for the whole load: look here and here.

so you want to say that all 945 chipsets (including one i'm going to purchase - Intel D945GNTLKR) will support core duo and core2 duo?

BTW I didn't completely cover your first question: The Intel D945GNTLKR mobo is NOT a 479pin socket so it would not support the upcoming Merom processor (neither does it support the current Core Solo/Duo processors). You would have to get a mobo that has a mobile 479 pin socket and have either an i945 or i975 chipset.

Although the Intel D945GNTLKR mobo has an i945 chipset, it has a 775pin socket and not a 479pin socket that is needed to fit a Yonah or Merom. Such a processor simply wouldn't fit.

There is a small possibility however that it might support the Conroe processor which will be the Core 2 Solo/Duo DESKTOP processor and has a 775pin layout. I'm not sure about that though as it is not completely clear if the i945 chipset will support this future processor. I can tell you though that the currently available i975 chipset will support it and so will the i965 chipset that is going to be available in the future.

So when talking about the Intel Core(2) processors, keep these different mobo flavours in mind:

775pin socket - For desktop processors

Chipsets: i975, i965 and POSSIBLY i945(?)

Supports the future Core 2 Solo/Duo processors codenamed Conroe (and naturally the current Pentium 4, Pentium D, Celeron, Celeron D etc. etc.)

479pin socket - For mobile processors:

Chipsets: i975 and i945

Supports the current Core Solo/Duo (codename Yonah ) and the future Core 2 Solo/Duo Mobile processors (codename Merom)

i think i figured out about conroe, imo you should look for viiv tehnology support, and btw there are a few 945 mombos, Intel D945GBOLKR and D945GPMLKR (also available asus and gigabyte versions) which should work with forthcoming intel processors (of course that says nothing about compability with osx).

unfortunately they're not available here, and 975 is way too expensive (~270USD). i'll stick with intel 945GNTLKR, at least it should work with osx.

I have this combo, it doesnt want to install JAS 4.6 on it... Just SLOWLY installs then wont boot to post setup. any ideas?

config:

1gb PQI RAM 667 - 5400

SATA drive 80 GB drive

DVD RW etc...

N4L-VM DH MB & T2600

Video is a Geforce 6200 TC 128mb

discovered same problem! Loading installation dvd takes bloody ages, then screen gets blue after some minutes machine turns off. No mouse cursor did appear!?

Any ideas? Is there a chance getting it to work or should I better stick to a Socket 775 with a PentiumD?

I thought a dual core would be better for rosetta apps.

My config:

N4L-VM

2x1024 MB MDT 16 chips Double Sided 667 Mhz

Onboard Graphics (GMA 950)

T2400 CPU

Tried USB Keyboard/Mouse & PS/2 KB/Mouse

40 GB Western Digital ATA

DVD Rom

ok I just fixed it. It was because it didn't like my DVI-ADD2 card. Installation works with my monitor connected to the ordinary analog video out...

did anybody try the beta bios from asus web site? they state it will enhance pci-x compatibility???

regards

-s.
