Icebreaker
I use Photoshop CS and Lightroom most....but many other programms as well and I have iMac G5 (the first version) and I´m wondering when it is the best time to switch to Intel. As the time passes, the computers become faster and more programs become universal. However, in the meantime I´m stuck with G5 and really crappy Nvidia 5200 64 graphics card (cannot run Aperture) Basically, I see 3 options: 1) buy a good dual core later this month when Intel lower prices on the D9X0 processors, 2) in September when the Conroes arrive or 3) next year when Photoshop and all other programs have become universal. I have no experience in OSX on Intel chips, so I would like to know your experiences from switching or when you would think it is best to upgrade to an Intel computer. Colonel
I just upgraded from my iMac G5 to an Intel Mac Mini. I'm thinking that alot of new Leopard features are going to be Intel only. I would recomend that you upgrade soon. Icebreaker
How does the performance between the iMac G5 and the Intel Mini compare? Ouch
If you use photoshop cs for even moderate use i would say stear clear of intel macs until cs3 comes out as universal. I use cs2 occasionally on my macbook and performance is noticably slower than performance on G5 class systems. Mind you if your hanging onto your G5 then there is no reason not to switch for other tasks. The question is wether the system type you require has been transitioned with - if want to replace your G5 eventually then you'd be better waiting until apple releases their intel version of the G5 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/14380-when-is-the-best-time-to-upgrade-from-g5-to-intel/#findComment-91877 Share on other sites

Photoshop won't be for Intel processors until at least next year. Also, Adobe makes their applications scream on PPC chips anyway because they optimize for Altivec (which the G5 has) and 64-bit computing (which the G5 has). So buying a Mactel now makes no sense if Photoshop is your bread/butter, because it will be super pokey. 2. Don't worry about not being able to run Aperture. I haven't heard many positive reviews of it. 3. I'll just bet that Photoshop will continue to keep their stuff optimized for Altivec for a few more years. I mean, they've invested a lot of time and patience in Altivec, so I bet that G5 will be good for years to come. Icebreaker
Thanks all, you have helped me getting my thoughts straight. Well, Photoshop is not my bread and butter, just a hobby. I´m a postgratuate business student....who likes to take photographs of his wife and daughter at a pro level. The most drawbacks of my current setup is that I need to buy an external monitor and the iMac has only VGA out, but I guess it isn´t a big deal.
