I'm a college student, fairly poor at that. My random generic intel board was running a legal licensed copy of Vista I had. I originally got the computer by buying separate parts and eventually assembling a full system.

Let me state i'm not into pirating, I buy my music legally through iTunes and when I can purchase software like Logic, Matlab etc (with a student discount). Being involved in the development of software I feel its nice to reward companies for quality software.

About a week ago I decided to get OSX86 to work on my box, I purchased a legal copy of leopard and downloaded Leo4ALL. I realize legally this protects me in no way, but call it good karma I wanted at least to feel apple wasn't getting screwed out of the deal.

After installing OSX86 I went through the daunting task of installing my applications, some of which require authorization/registration. A copy of iWorks I had legally was installed on my system and in my haste I submited (along with all my full information) the registration and system info to Apple.

My port sniffing software has began to find port scanning coming from an unidentified California IP address. I'm curious if anyone knows if Apple is active in finding and prosecuting those who use OSX86 or am I being paranoid?

Last, i'd like to hear any thoughts on the ethics of using OSX86 when you own a legal copy of Leopard, and legally what violations could they get me on?

Sure it isn't software updater? You would probably get a letter if caught because you are one person. If it was a business that is serious trouble. You would probably be asked to co-operate first, and if you don't legal action will probably get taken against you. They don't tend to care about a single person, they go after businesses because it is financially better for them to do this (Court fees amongst other things). No company packet sniffs. I believe that is against the law, and its stated in their privacy policy.

Chances are, paranoia got the best of you.

You bought a legit copy of OSX and they're getting their money....so personally I don't think they care

But w/ leo4all you are pirating software....if you use the boot-132 method w/ your legit dvd the only thing "illegal" would be breaking apple's EULA.

I use "illegal" very loosely because there are only a few countries that recognize the existence of a EULA and within those countries most EULA's rarely stand a chance in court, cause they can be so contested

I say, for personal use, it would cost them more to prosecute you than the cost they're not getting by you not buying a hack.

OSx86 is a hobby, a fun one and it probably does apple more good than harm

Oh and since your in college the random ip's is probably from all the gigabytes of porn going through the college dorm system....lol jk

Apple has bigger fish to fry.

I give you a pat on the back for your non-pirating lifestyle, its a very good one to lead not many people choose it with software so available to download and very few people ever prosecuted. I would say you are far from being in "trouble" with the law.

Note: There is no government robot watching the nation making sure no one speeds and no one does drugs and no one ever steals, there are things that happen and even government officials let happen. We are all human and we like to push the limits at one point or another. Its in Americans nature to rebel! Its how we are America in the first place! So dont be so paranoid, its ok your a good boy/girl (you dont have your gender set).
