Is it possible to use a notebooks wifi card in a Desktop computer with an adapter?

I have a laptop's wifi card (internal) which I will recycle one way or another but I wondered if it is possible to buy an adapter to fit that card into a desktop computer. I am told it is possible but Google hasn't been my friend on this occasion.

Is it a MiniPCI, MiniPCIe, Express Card, PCMCIA, or ...?

 

If it's Express Card of PCMCIA, there are cards that let you slot these into regular PCIe or PCI slots on a desktop (such as http://www.provantage.com/startech-pex2ec~7STRP0FP.htm).

 

If it's MiniPCI or MiniPCIe, I have found some cards that let you slot these into PCIe or PCI slots on a desktop, but it will obviously not have a bracket, will be much taller than a regular card, and will need some sort of support fashioned inside your case. And then you'll need to find an antenna that can connect to the socket on the PCB and run it outside your case.

I have not seen an adapter for an internal wireless card I have seen it for an external wireless adapter. You might want to check newegg or tigerdirect.

Thank you for the replies, it is a laptop's mini PCI-E wireless card. So what I need is a Mini PCI-E to PCI with antenna. Fusionne link comes closest by the looks of it but a false economy at that price.

Sorry for bumping this one but I keep hearing that a lot of people have laptop wifi cards that they replaced with Dells or Broadcoms and don't know what to do with them. An obvious suggestion would be to sell them on ebay but if anyone knows of a cheap adapter so that people can recycle their laptops wifi card in their wifi-less desktop computer, though would make us obsessive recyclists happy!

Unfortunately that card cost about $100.00 USD, you can buy the Dell 1505 desktop wireless adapter on ebay for around $50.00 which includes the broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n miniPCIe card and external hi-gain antenna and gives you third-party airport working OOB.

Thanks guys, looks as though as a project it is a false economy. For some delusional reason I imagined this was a common migration from broken laptop to wireless-less Desktop computer.

Hi falseadress, you are so right about finding the right combination of keywords but you need to read my post number 6 - it's miniPCI-E. If you see one in your travels, post back here.

 

Actually, maybe without direct url links, a vague signpost via Google would suffice. I'm not about pimping any seller's website.
