Soooo.. I have an XP partition set up perfectly and I do not have the time to:

1) Backup

2) Erase; format to GUID

3) Install Leopard

4) Install XP again

Is it possible for me (I have a vanilla OSX DVD and the 123 (I forgot the name) CD) to install OSX on MBR? Whenever I try, I get this error:

The installer cannot prepare the volume for installation.

It asks me to repartition the drive using GUID, rather than MBR.

Any hope? Or do I need a modified DVD? Can I modify my vanilla DVD?

You can't use that Retail disc to install to MBR. You have to modify it by replacing OSInstall.pkg or .mpkg (can't remember) downloaded from somewhere (I think it's InsanelyMac) or download one of the prepatched DVDs. Hopefully someone can explain better...

I'm searching the forums, but I don't see much of what you're talking about.

Could you or someone else elaborate?

I don't wish to get a modified DVD (for one, bittorrent just doesn't work at college.... period), so if I can modify the one I have that would be great (or even better a method that doesn't require me to use another dual-layer DVD).

Thanks ;)

Oh yea I forgot you need Mac OS X to replace that file. The disc's contents can't be seen in Windows. I'm searching for that OSInstall.mpkg thingy... hold on.

I might be making some progress. Here are my thoughts:

TransMac can read .dmg files and so can HFSExplorer. Neither one can write to a .dmg but TransMac can delete files from a .dmg.

.dmg files, when expanded (and if unencrypted; which the OSX DVD is), are equivalent to .iso files. TransMac can expand .dmg files.

If I can rename the expanded .dmg to .iso, I can (hopefully) find a program (or TransMac?) that can insert the new OSInstall.mpkg file (assuming that the one provided works for a 10.5.4 DVD).

Then I can either just burn the .iso, or rename it to .dmg and burn it through TransMac (that's how I burned the first DVD that I made).

Sound like a feasible plan? I just need to find a program to modify the .dmg or see if I can do so with TransMac.

I've been trying to get Windows XP and OSX on the same drive for days now - MBR is the way forward, thanks for this link, I've not actually managed it! :D
