Shadrack
I just wanted to report that iDeneb v1.3 installed fine on my hardware. The key was selecting the correct motherboard chipset. I can't remember all the specifics of my hardware (I'm at work atm). I'll post specifics if people request them. Motherboard - ASUS P5K-Deluxe WiFi *Works* Graphics Card - eVGA GeForce 8800GT *Works* (dual-display worked on first bootup) On-board sound - *Works* (8x analog output, and SPIF output are unconfirmed, but the green stereo output works) Both Gigabit Ethernet Cards (Marvell and Realtek i believe) - *Work* ASUS WiFi 802.11g - Not verified yet (I have it disabled in bios) USB Ports - *Work* Firewire 400 Ports - *Work* ASUS DVD±RW Drive - *Works* Cingular Bluetooth Dongle - Was not recognized "out-of-box" Samsung CLP-315 Color Laser Printer (USB) - Was not recognized "out-of-box", but drivers from Samsung worked. Microsoft Comfort Keyboard 5000 - *Works* (volume buttons worked from the start) Microsoft Laser [something] Mouse 4000 - *Works* USB Dynx Headset (speaker/mic I use for Ventrilo) - *Works* Firewire 400 external hard drive and all SATA drives (NTFS partitions) - *Work* Motherboard powersaving "Sleep" and Wake-up from "sleep" mode - *Work* Notes About Install 1. Selecting the correct chipset for your motherboard is critical. Sorry I did not post the specific chipset here. I searched online for me motherboard chipset and found a lot of false information. I found the chipset info in the manual for my motherboard. On my 3rd attempt for install, I got it right. 2. Initial boot I thought I had no sound. The sound card "chipset" was selectable as an iDeneb 1.3 option. Again, apologize that I can't remember what it was for this post. It turned out that Mac OS X selected my USB Dynx Headset as the "default" sound device. Easy change in System Preferences. 3. I installed Mac OS on its very own SATA hard disk drive so that I would not risk corrupting my MBR on my Vista HDD. Initially I could switch the boot order of my hard drives in the BIOS boot options in order to boot each OS. Dual-Booting guides were all kind of confusing for me, because they were assuming that I had installed Mac OS on a seperate partition of my Windows HDD. I did get it to work, using the Vista Boot Manager to handle the dual booting (not Darwin). Here is what I did: * Booted into Vista by setting the appropriate HDD priority. * Copied the file "chain0" from the iDeneb v1.3 DVD to C:\ (root of Vista drive) * Openned a command prompt as "the administrator." Type bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X” Type bcdedit /enum active Type bcdedit /set {GUID} PATH \chain0 Where "{current}" is typed litterally and {GUID} should be replaced with something like {08Cd-etc-etc-32345}. You get this string with the /enum active bcdedit command and is under the "Mac OS X" section. Reboot and now there are two options "Vista Ultimate 64bit" and "Mac OS X" with the default set to Vista and a countdown timer to automatically choose the default. This worked like a champ. I did not have to run the "fdisk" commands that were in a bunch of dual-boot guides. I'm not sure what voodoo is in the chain0, because I never specified exactly where the Mac OS install was. I think the chain0 file contains bootcode that searches for the Mac OS X install drive and partition. Pretty neat. In regards to updates: I disabelled automatic software updates first thing. This is crucial as the default setting is to update whatever critical updates become available. I did run the iTunes update from Software Update and that worked fine. I ignored the system file updates and security patches. Hopefully someone with a similar configuration might find this post useful. I'll reply to it with the specifics on my sound and motherboard chipset as that is really the most crucial part of the install. EDIT: I'm such a n00b. It isn't PK5 it's P5K. Hopefully my edit "takes." Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/134909-ideneb-v13-successful-install-on-asus-p5k-deluxe-w-q6600/ Share on other sites

Hopefully my edit "takes." Hi there! I have the same mobo/cpu as you! I also used iDeneb 1.3 (10.5.5). Worked great! I am coming from a xfx 780i that Leopard did not like. If you use your IDE channels and have more the 2gb of ram, you need to get the updated jmicron.kext! Otherwise you will get kernel panics. The thread is in the hardware section under ide/sata drivers! Glad to hear about another ASUS P5K user!! :-) EDIT: BTW, it's a ICH9R motherboard chipset and AD1988b sound chipset. Also, the wifi works with the realtek driver! It's what I am using now :-) The link is floating around in the hardware section under network/wireless I believe. It's a Realtek 8187 chipset. Also, go ahead and do the updates, they all work. Just if you use time machine, you will need to replace the IONetworkingFamily.kext. The airport update screws up time-machine (by replacing that kext with a newer one). There is a thread on the time machine fix, or if you PM me, I can get you the kext. Take care! Shadrack
Hi! I am not receiving any kernel panics and have not installed jmicron.kext. I have 6GB of ram. Is it something worth installing even if I don't get the kernel panics? Thanks for the chipset wifi info! I was having a hard time finding it. The user manual specifies "ASUS WiFi-AP Solo" lol. It would seem that my shutting down/rebooting is inconsistent. Any ideas? I'm not 100% sure, but I think it has to do with using "sleep" mode in a session that messes up the shutdown and reboot. Everything will go "black" and my monitors shut off, but the computer never turns off. I usually just hit the power button at this point... Yeah, if you don't use the IDE channels, then don't worry about the kext. I also have the sleep -> won't shutdown or reboot properly issue. If I don't put it to sleep, restart/shutdown work fine, but if it sleeps, neither work properly. I am going to try the "OpenHaltRestart" kext from Psystar. I will let you know if it fixes the issue. EDIT: The OpenHaltRestart.kext didn't make any difference... Shadrack
Some additional info on the power/restart problem after sleep. 1. It is definitely tied to sleep. I have yet to have the system "hang" at shut down or restart if I do not allow the system to go into sleep mode. 2. Whenever the system returns from sleep, i always have a "Device Removal" error message. og-phantom, do you get a similar error message? I think it has something to do with a peripheral, but it could be something on the mother board. 3. I've tried the OSX86 Tools "Force Shutdown" option, but I had the same results. I guess the big question is: Is there a hardware driver that is "hanging up" at shutdown, or is the signal that tells the motherboard to shutdown getting lost...? Does anyone know if there is a shutdown log, or a way to produce a shutdown log? og-phantom: Are you having a BIOS time problem whenever you boot into Mac OS? I think that the OS wants to update the BIOS clock to match its own, but it is always off. This isn't apparent until I boot Windows and see that the time is about 6 hours off. This is something consistent that I can re-produce by setting the correct time, booting into Mac OS, and then rebooting and checking the time in BIOS. -Shad Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/134909-ideneb-v13-successful-install-on-asus-p5k-deluxe-w-q6600/#findComment-969159 Share on other sites

The restart/shutdown bug is tied to sleep. I have yet to figure this out. I just did a "vanilla retail" install to another sata drive and did the boot132 method to the efi partition on it, and I am going to test that install. Will post back with results on that. 2] I thought that was just me! I have a USB Bluetooth dongle that I always have plugged in, and I thought it was that. I guess it's a P5K-D glitch? Everything works ok, just has that error window when returning from sleep. I think it is a driver issue, who knows, jmicron, sound, wifi, the modded sata drivers for ICH? I found out the BIOS clock issue is tied to Windows. Windows and MacOS store the time differently, and both adjust the clock. I just force a time sync to get the clock right again. I think it is more MacOS stores the clock in a funky way and throws the clock off 6 hours. Wern
This has been the right thread at the right time! I have to install iDeneb v1.3 on my box this week, and have the ASUS P5K board. I have gleaned as much as I can from the posts, but would really appreciate some input regarding the following: 1) I am planning a Vista x64/Leopard dual boot. I am starting clean on a machine with two physical drives. Any tips regarding installation order and recommended steps? Would it be better to install on one partitioned drive or use a dedicate physical drive for each OS? 2) I am using SATA channels except for my DVD drive which is obviously running on IDE. Currently have 4Gb RAM and GeForce 8800GTS (planning 4Gb more RAM). Do I need to install any separate KEXT's? 3) I will be predominantly using Vista for work related stuff and Leopard for media editing (PS, Final Cut etc.). Are there any other last minute gems regarding how to best set this up, KEXT's to include etc? I have a MBP running bootcamp so I am used to this way of working, but have never attempted an OSX install on a PC Box. Your input is appreciated. onii
I think for the P5K you have to take out 2GB of ram if you use IDE until you install the jimcro.kext. Aside from that..I have no idea about dual boot. A a question of my own.. I installed leopard on its own IDE drive, and plan on replacing it with a SATA drive so I dont have IDE drives. Is it possible to copy everything from the leopard drive to a new drive and boot from it? Or is there a special way? Best, Wern I would suggest separate drives for each OS, makes dual booting easier. Grab the modified jmicron kext in the drivers forum-> Sata/IDE subforum. The thread is sticked, it's labeled as AppleVIA more than 4GB (or something like that). Inside that thread, last page, there is a "workaround" for the esata. Update: success! ManhattanJeff
I was wrong about my ASUS model-- it's P5N-D. I hope it's OK to post my problem here anyway. I think I solved the geforce 8800GT display problem by using the NVKush driver in iDeneb v1.3. I'm still having boot problems after the install. I get an error message "err=100 could not set mach lookup policy for service.com.apple.ocspd" then it freezes. Any thoughts on what could cause this and solutions? For the chipset, I used the "AppleNforceATA" option. This worked better than the other nvidia options. I also tried the "AppleNforceATA Test" and tried no chipset -- both of these completely failed. Any thoughts? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/134909-ideneb-v13-successful-install-on-asus-p5k-deluxe-w-q6600/#findComment-981049 Share on other sites
keftes
Me too. 99% success. If I could just Shut Down and Restart, I would be 100% I disabled the WLAN and EHCI in the bios. System has NEVER had a kernel panic. I run VMware with VT enabled and load the system heavily. Prior to disabling the EHCI and WLAN, I would get random kernel panics or system hangs with spinning wheel. Specs: P5k Deluxe WiFi (v812) Q6600 (3.34 GHz clock) Nvidia 8600GTS 512mb I narrowed the instability down to Realtek WLAN and EHCI. It's a night and day difference when those are disabled. I purchased a linksys access point and enabled the onboard lan. With the latest updates, as of the date of this post, EVERYTHING but "Shut Down" and "Restart" WORKS. When I do a shut down, the os gets to the point where it powers of the system but just sits there with a black screen. I simply press and hold the power button for a few seconds and it shuts down. The file system has been unmounted so it's safe. Being that I just put it to sleep, I rarley have to shut down or restart. If you need the bios settings let me know. I can forward the bios saved file so you can import settings. whitman
for real, what a strange problem. I got the system up and running in about 25 minutes, everything working sans shutdown (which creates a kernel panic) and restart (only if I let the system sleep before restarting.) My specs are: P5K Deluxe WIFI, Q6600, ATI 2600XT 512MB PCIe, sata HDD, ata DVD. I've tried installing multiple SATAs and IDEs and transferred files between them (nothing too extensive, but a couple of gigs) and no kernel panics, decent transfer speed. both onboard lans work, audio works (headphone and speaker out at least) and the hard drives have normal icons. I only had to track down a driver package for the HD2600XT card to get QI/QE working. I've found that the 9.4.0 StageXNU kernel is the fastest, produces xbench results +25pts higher than vanilla kernel and approx 5pts more than the others. None of the kernels on the iDeneb v1.3 disk fix the restart/shutdown issues. Install notes: every kernel (for me at least) shows a blue screen with cursor on first boot to OSX. I have to restart and use '-x' only for the first boot into the OS. My install options were as follows: Bios->defaults w/ exception of setting S3 sleep IHCx Fixed (chipset) JMicronATA (chipset) Skge Marvel (ethernet) ADI1988 (audio) RTL8201CL (ethernet) Ati Radeon HD2600XT PCIE (video) 9.4.0 StageXNU (kernel) No matter what I've tried, I can't get restart to work after sleep and have never been able to shutdown without getting a kernel panic. whitman Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/134909-ideneb-v13-successful-install-on-asus-p5k-deluxe-w-q6600/#findComment-985147 Share on other sites
brassmonk
Hi there! Take care! Hello og-phantom! I read your post and I'm contacting you since I need a bit of help. I have a plain p5k asus mobo with 4G ram (1066fsb) and an intel quad 6600. I installed iDeneb v1.3 perfectly on my system. However, since I'm in the music bussiness I need to be sure of my systems stability before applying any serious music production apps. It has been 2 weeks that I am testing leopard and I have had 5 random crashes in which my screen goes transparent grey on the top side. Any suggestions? Bubba_MAC
Hopefully my edit "takes."
