Hi all.

I have problems with 10.5.5 combo update.

This is not a first time when i see this error, but i really can't understand the rule, and very need to opinions.

Configuration:

ASUS P5B motherboard

NVIDIA GT 7600 ( work nice with efi studio strings )

Quad Core 6700 2.67 GHz.

4 Gb RAM.

3 SATA HDD-s: SAMSUNG 200 Gb, MAXTOR 200 Gb, Hitachi 200 Gb.

Sound - ok.

Mouse and Keyboard - USB. All ok.

______

I use just Kaliway 10.5.2 DVD and don`t install any drivers after installation. All work. (some times ago i have the problems but my configuration was changed now)

Problem:

1. After install 10.5.5 update with standard way (i mean steps with removing AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext and rewriting startup script with "dsmos.kext" ) - all work. I have QE/CE working nice, Sound work nice, Network, Keyboard and Mouse - also work as before update, but i have the very painful problem -

My system hang (kernel panic - gray screen) in random times. I can`t catch the rule.. But some regularity i see:

1. When hight file-writing-reading activity. When i do backup with TimeMachine, or when i start Transmittion with big files in downloads. Or use soft who use intensive file reading-writing...

2. Of course i do Repair all disks many times, repair Permissions on "/" Disk, but Disk Utility show all statuses is [ok].

3. I can`t find any log messages about it. Logging stopped then start from next boot time..

4. I try do this update many times. In any cases - one problem.

I search someone with similar issue... What i do wrong ?? 10.5.2 work without any troubles. And after 10.5.5 update all look nice (for first look only). In 10.5.2 i copy, download, compress big files, do backups and not see any problems !!

Someone, help me collect information about this? With 10.5.5 my system work really faster but hang without rule in random times.

Very big thanks.

What Kernel have you installed? A Vanilla? If not, try the new Voodoo-Kernel (Pinned Topic is above).

Ok, thanks, i will try it... But i`m afraid do this update again - this in completely kill my system yesterday, and many tries before :blink:

And next time...post in post-installation-Topic.....please -_-

Ok thanks, i just don`t know the forum hierarchy (i`m not frequently write).

You mean "Post-Installation Discussion", right?

I`m will keep in mind this.

Anyway.. If someone have analogue issue, please help me collect information.

This really unpredictable error. I can`t understand the logic of this.

remove one of your ram or enter maxmem=3072 when boot up (press F8), try if this helps.

Thanks for answer..

I think, it sounds right.. Some times ago, when i try upgrade RAM from 2 Gb to 6 Gb - my Linux hang in random times. I work in some software (Side Fx Houdini Apprentice edition) with huge data sizes (disk caches, dynamics simulations) and on this operations, also when render - system hang on random tiomes. I remove the 2 Gb from my P5B - now only 4 Gb - and Linux work nice.

I have 2 identically memory modules - every is 2 Gb (dual chanel mode). I have also 2 modules, every with 1 Gb, but i unplug it. System hang with 6 Gb. Any combinations modules in memory slots - bad results. :P

Maybe i really need another kernel for 10.5.5 update.

This look like memory problem.

(thanks for answer - now i`m coolect all opinions and start update again. i`m tired reinstall system after every update. I don`t know another way)

ok.. No good results..

1. Install 10.5.5 update and use Voodoo_beta2 - not help. I have system hang in simple internet browsing with firefox.. Also in some software installations.

This look like.. Some time after installing update, system is work nice. But in some unpredictable times this just hang with grey screen..

2. Repairing the disk permissions - all permissions are ok.

3. Trick with memory i will try today, and write about results.

I don't understand what`s wrong, just think - the 10.5.5 update is not for me now. 10.5.2 work without any little troubles. 10.5.5 make my system extremely unstable.

hm. i need to try all of this with "debug=0x100" string. Also today. I`m write about results

tomazzzi - no.. All devices are on SATA interface Some time ago i buy SATA DVD-rw, because my old IDE DVD-RW can`t install Kaliway DVD. i`m not remember now - in the evening i try all - the debug string and look, what DVD i have :):) i`m not frequently open my computer.

ok..

1. I`m start with debug=0x100 string. When system go in "kernel panic" i see some debug text, but i`m don`t know where it was writen on disk. I write some from screen:

getPhysicalSegment() out of 32b range 0x10000c000 class IOGeneralMemoryDescriptor
(blablabla)
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies)
(blabla)
com.appleiokit.IOATABlockStorage(2.0.4)
	IOStorageFamily(1.5.2)
	IOATAFamily(1.7.3)
	com.apple.driver.VIAATA(1.0.2)
	IOPCIFamily(2.4.1)
	IOATAFamily(1.7.3)

Sorry, i can`t grab all text. But i think - this may be enough.

2. I install two kext - JMicron and VIAATA - but system go to "waiting for root device" mode.

3. I test all of this with voodoo_beta2 kernel - and just "still wait root device" message.

AppleUSBEHCI - unable to initialize Still Waiting for root device.

~~~
i`m make backup for old extensions, of course, i can put it back to extensions folder. This really RAM problem..
Now i`m restore kext`s and try boot with "maxmem=3072" string, and replace some kext with old versionsfrom 10.5.2
1. i`m try boot with "maxmem=3072" string, and start extraction some 10.5.2 kext with "pacifist" - from installation DVD, but again "kernel panic" on extraction process time.
I thinks"maxmem=3072" don`t work in my case. I need unplug 1 RAM module... (this tragedy, because 2 Gb computer - not for my work, really)
2. ...But "pacifist" extract some contents, and i`m try to use old IOATAFamily.kext - but non success, i think file was damaged when system hang on extraction. (On boot i see the message - "IOATAFamily.kext not found" and etc... )
3. Now i`m try quick install 10.5.2 on some partition, and grab kext-s from here..
How you think? In my case update to 10.5.5 - the stupid idea?
Waiting for root device?.Ok.Check if the ID device of your SATA controller is in the .plist of the extensions.At that time (10.5.1-2) there was a problem with the 4Gb or more because of the memory addresses.These extensions solve that problem if you are lucky
Mac Cute, i don`t have enough time for understanding, where i must check ID device of my SATA controller...
I just recover from 10.5.2 some kext`s, of course, this is not a very nice way, but all work now without hangs..
I take the:
1. IOStorageFamily.kext (may be not necessary, but in panic dump was trace for this module)
2. IOATAFamily.kext
3. IOPCIFamily.kext
and of course JMicron.kext and AppleVIAATA.kext
____
I try work with big archives and some big files - all work without hang.
Where i can check ID device for my SATA controller ?
(thank all for reply, but i don`t think, what i found real good solution of the problem. )
You could use OSx86 Tools for that:it's very easy.Just click 'View PCI Device/Vendor ID' :wacko:
This two kext`s for my P5B motherboard. I do some little Info.plist modifications in this kext`s.
The original kext`s and updates, you can find in this post, thanks to slashack:
I've been having this same exact problem. I have 8GB of RAM but I have a Gigabit P35-DS4 motherboard. You think these Kext's will work?
I am having kernel panics whenever I load Vuze (formerly Azureus), so I believe I have the same problem when I load large files. I have tried using the modified AppleNForceATA.kext, but no dice.
Specs:
AMD Opteron 165
Abit AN8-SLI nForce4
3GB DDR400 RAM (tried taking a gig out, same problem)
8800GT 512MB
500gb Western Digital SATA
Sony DVD-RW DL IDE
I am not sure what is wrong. Initially, I thought it was Java, but after seeing this, I believe it is when I access large files. In my KP, I get this:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.nvidia.driver.AppleNForceATA(1.0.3)........
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.4.1).....
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily(1.7.3f1)....
com.apple.driver.AppleAPIC(1.2.0)......
com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform(1.1.0)......
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.4.1).....
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(1.2.0).....
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily(1.7.3f1)....
I've tried restoring all of these files from my 10.5.3 Leo4allv3 disc, but same error. I've also tried using the kexts from here, but same KP when I load Vuze (I don't believe I need AppleVIAATA or JMicron, but I tried them seperately in case as well). It's frustrating cause I am sooo close to getting 10.5.5 to work hahah. I opened the plist in AppleNForceATA from the link, but my DevIDs are in there. I also made sure NVResman had only my DevID and it's no longer showing up in the KP. Any other ideas?
EDIT: I also tried using iDeneb 10.5.5 and had the same problem. My current install is from the Leo4allv3 disk. I've been booting with -v -f debug=0x100 every time as well.
This solution is only for JMicron controller (my case) and VIA-based controllers and troubles when system have a more than 3 Gb of RAM:
Basically, the problem is when you have more than 3 gb of ram (some says 2.5 gb) and AppleVIAATA driver (I think JMicron IDE driver also has this problem).
Sorry, but i`m don`t know about your motherboard model..
But i`m sure - this depend from memory controller. I`t need to be patched for support more than 3 Gb.
I see AppleNForceATA there for downloading.
May be this what you need ?
