Discostu2120
So this summer I'm going to be working in OS X in DVD studio pro for my job. In the past I've used a G4 desktop, Powerbook 17" or G5 dual, but now I'm going to be working outside the office using my own X86 hardware. At the moment I have a Pentium M based notebook with ati 9700 mobility, 1gb ram, 15.4 widescreen. DVD studio pro 4 is slow, but works on this system. DVD studio pro should be universal soon with the release of final cut studio, so that should help at least some. I've tested dvd sp 4 with a 6600gt video card on a desktop and video just doesn't show up at all. My question is what is the ultimate system for DVD SP? I want something that will encode and play mpeg 2 files smoothly. What would work better: a system based on AMD X2 w/ ATI video card (X or X1k series) or Intel Pentium D w/ GMA 950 integrated graphics. I just want a smooth experience with DVD studio pro, don't worry about any other stuff, I have other systems to game on, etc. I guess this really just comes down to driver support. declan
From my experience, the pentium/gma950 route is the most trouble free, and probably the closest to the real thing as you can get, i know the one thing that stopped me going through the ATi route was it seemed hit and miss, and most reported graphic errors, for my two cents the pentium/gma950 is the best option and then as and if other cards are supported, its just a can stick one in and disable the onboard. This HackIntelMac is good for checking out OSX but I would never use it for any productive work. Don't depend on a universal app from some of these large software houses soon (see how much delay Adobe has shown when they have known about the Intel switch for a year).Stay with what works and be assured that your time is worth more than a difference of a few hundred dollars. Point taken, I may end up doing just that. However, I have a couple months to test this out before I need it and I think I can get something running that not only works, but works better than my old G4 setup. If I can get an x2 or pentium d setup running dvd sp and compressor natively i think that would be very fast. munky
get an intel 945 mobo with GMA950, and a pentium D 9x0 chip, and you're laughing. certainly feels very close to a real mac for me. i've added an ATI X1800XL, but this limits me to 1280x1024 and get occasional mouse glitches. if you want it for serious work, i'd stick with the GMA. MacApprentice
See my sig, mine is really close to the real thing, very few problems. only some rare apps (mostly games) don't work. I'm ever thinking of making it my main machine. Discostu2120
Right now I have an AMD athlon 64 based desktop system. MSI k8n neo4 platinum mobo, 6600gt, 3gb pc3200, Venice Core 3000+ @2.4ghz, etc. I think what I may do is pick up a cheap ($20 on ebay) x600 pci-e and stick it in this system to see how that works. If it can play mpeg2 smoothly and be stable in DVD SP4 I'll be happy. mr_christer
i also wanna do some serious production with my intel mac. I worked with a g5 to edit with final cut 5 and author with dvdsp 3 osx86 runs incredibly good on my cheap inspiron6000 with x300 OK, I get some graphic glitches and no widescreen but still its a very useable setup. Up to this point I only checked out iPhoto and iMovie and it runs great. I get a xbench result of 61. so I think when finalcut and dvdsp is universal it will also work great. Especially logic and final cut is very interesting to me cause you don't get it for xp. and logic is already universal. some people with xs key reported a good workflow! I'm really positive my system could replace ... lets say... at least the mac mini! fireshark
video: slow, but everthing supported: GMA950 widescreen, no QE/CI: nVidia (np_ driver) QE/CI, no widescreen: ATI Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/12491-hardware-choices-pentium-d-vs-x2-gma950-vs-ati-etc/#findComment-79923 Share on other sites
