sklarsky Posted July 26, 2008 Share Posted July 26, 2008 so i've got an old athlon64 system from circa summer 2005. it's a 2800+ clawhammer 1.8ghz running on an MSI K8n Neo3-F nforce4 motherboard with a radeon x300 gpu... i'm wondering what the best method of install is? is it possible to use retail? or is that intel only? Novious Posted August 26, 2008 Share Posted August 26, 2008 Retail is not going to work, because you can't run the vanilla kernel on AMD, I think you should try Leo4All Leo4All didn't work for me and I have an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ with a skt 754. I have tried Leo4All, Zephyroth, Kalyway and iDeneb. The most succesfull is iDeneb. I at least get the installer to load. It even installs. But it panics on boot. I have however gotten Jas Tiger 10.4.8. But that's the best I can do. cgsheen Posted August 26, 2008 Share Posted August 26, 2008 One of my best installs is running on a s754 MB with a single core Turion64. That was my first Zephyroth 10.5.1 install and my son uses that machine daily. @ sklarsky: The only way to tell for sure is to try... The nforce MB's are generally supported, the CPU shouldn't be a problem, the nforce LAN (onboard LAN adapter(s)) have been a challenge for many. Actually, with OSx86, older hardware usually has better support than the brand new stuff. I don't know about the x300 video though - a quick search will show if anyone has had any sucess there. Otherwise, there are any number of video cards being used with OSx86 that have full QE/CI support. You'll need to know what hardware and chipsets are in use on your motherboard. ("nforce LAN" isn't good enough...) The exact audio chipset being used, and LAN chipset(s) will be necessary (realtek RTL8201? Marvell?) for you to find the proper .kexts ("drivers") or workarounds... Other than that, you'll have a lot of reading to do. There can be a lot of "trial-and-error" involved. I'd suggest you try one of the Zephyroth releases, or Leo4all. Listing all of your hardware is always a good idea. Lastly, you'll find more AMD-specific help at infinitemac.com or at the Leo4all website.
